Nubia started well but said a few wrong things, people in Nigeria don't speak other languages because of poor access to education, it is true not everybody has access to education but a vast majority do. We Nigerians speak other languages because leaving in this one country are over 250 tribes with over 250 languages who are proud to speak their language. And pidgin english is us twisting the English language to what suits *ALL* of us best. Even the pidgin english has different slangs across the country. I hope this explains things better.

Naturally, we have some many tribes and languages, so with or without education you don't expect everyone or people from different tribes to understand themselves.....so that why, we speak English or piggin.

Exactly, the pidgin English we speak in my Benue here is different for sure from what they speak in warri and lagos and other parts of the country... and since not everybody in the north is hausa and want to speak hausa, pidgin English is more common in towns especially and I'm sure that's the case in other zones with mixed tribes

Nigeria: English is the official general language. The three languages he mentioned are actually the main languages that were picked to unify and ease communication within parts of the country, realistically there are over 300 languages in Nigeria, even the Hausa he mentioned for the north, there are different variations of it. pidgin probably was as a result of trade as he mentioned.

@@MattHunX languages that result from trading are called pidgins. To make it more complicated - Nigerian Pidgin is not a pidgin, it's a creole, as it is not used specifically for trading anymore, and it is the native language of many.

@@insansiregar6158 it's different for China. Instead of mixing a bunch of local languages together with a former colonizer language (like in the case of Nigerian Pidgin), the Chinese standardized ONE of the local languages - Mandarin Chinese (more specifically, the Beijing dialect). As other Sinitic languages are not recognized by the government, they are slowly dying out, being slowly replaced by Mandarin Chinese.

The existence of different languages in Nigeria has nothing to do with access to education. It is due to the numerous ethnic (tribal) groups in the country. Access to education can only explain English proficiency or illiteracy. Take Ghana for instance, education is free and every child basically has access to basic education. There are still numerous languages in the country.

Congolese here🇨🇩 I wish Sam, the Congolese guy would have used actual expressions in proper Lingala (or any other National language for that matter) instead of only using slangs. Both nazo faze and eza tokos are slangs. Also, in Congo we have a similar communication problem as Nigeria as we have hundreds of dialects. But unlike Nigeria we don’t have one single unifying language such as Pigin. We have 4 national languages (Lingala - mostly spoken in the west and northwest, Swahili- mostly spoken in the East, Kikongo- mostly spoken in the southwest, and Tshiluba- mostly spoken in the center) and French is the official language spoken in schools, offices, etc. Lingala and Swahili are the most spoken national languages in DRC, so if you meet a Congolese, they are very likely to speak one of these two even if they do speak other languages /dialects as well. Lingala is also spoken in parts of Congo-Brazzaville 🇨🇬 and parts of Central African Republic. I’ve heard Cameroonians 🇨🇲 have a dialect that’s close to Lingala as well. Swahili is spoken in many countries in Eastern Africa such as Kenya, Tanzania and I believe part of Uganda too. But I’ve heard different countries have different variations of the language and the farther apart the regions, the harder communication will be although they’re all speaking Swahili.

Lingala was spread by being the regional trade language language that made it possible to communicate between tribes. It has some Bobangi and Kikongo in there. The Ngala language was also easier to digest for Europeans, so when they occupied our country in the late 1800s the language was spread all over and more and more french was introduced to it. The Congo is huge and divided by the forests so Lingala never took over. But same as Lingala there’s a bunch of local umbrella languages that bridge the hundreds of languages our tribes speak

You should have made this group to include countries from all all corners of Africa (from North, South, East, West and central) to make it more interesting. Finally I did like to say we the young people of African need to force our governments to unite Africa, with a single currency, the ability to travel, live and work in any African country and for everyone to have their rights protected under the same law!! We need to achieve this in our life time!! Greetings from your African brother from the State of Eritrea!!

Yeaah. Us, Rwandans, have to be careful with our Language. Once we went to this church in Uganda and they asked us to sing a song in Kinyarwanda. So, we were singing this song and the congregation kept laughing. When we got to our seats, we asked why people were laughing and they told us it was because we were saying “Imana” apparently it means/sounds like “vagina” in their language but in our language it means “God”. 😂😂😂
