One of my favourite F1 drivers of all time. Great guy. The Stig? I don't think he's a former F1 driver.
Got to love Nigel Mansell. Doing Birmingham proud!!! He grew up around the corner from me, and went to Matthew Boulton college. He's the type of driver we will never see anymore. A guy who will willingly sell his house to get a drive with an F1 team. A guy who will push his car over the finish line. A guy with a kick ass moustache!!!!
MANSELL the best, still fast going on 60, what a LEGEND.
Humble man and real legend,
Nige is so happy. He's smiling all the time. What a GREAT person and driver!
An absolute legend!
Wow, that is amazing skill going over the grass those times and still keeping the car under full control at that speed. Incredible driving.
My favorite racing driver of all time, and a true sportsman without all the cheating bollocks! Just to point out to earlier post's about Hamiltons time remember Mansell weighs alot more probably 20/30 k.g's more which would add over a second to his time plus the fact he's knocking on 60 so that's an awesome time, rock on 'Nige'
i admire the audience...they stand all the time
And imagine that we almost lost Nigel to golf in 1982 !!!

And on the car is a sticker from the South African airlines as a sponsor. And SAA went bankrupt due to government corruption soon after that.
its uncomprehendible the precision that they perform to, fantastic to watch, nothing else like it!
I like how modest and humble he is!
I have been watching F1 for about 45 years. Mansell is one of the greatest drivers. He certainly was one of the most exciting. He transcends the changing times between drivers who could drive anything and those who have to deal with a high tech F1 car. The Italians didn't call him the Lion for nothing. He so easily could have won three F1 championships and if he didn't have to drive around in a wheelbarrow for for the first half of his career, who knows what he could have achieved. Great bloke!
stiill got it!!! what a legend in the honda, used to watch him in `93-`95
Has anyone else noticed that the video lap isn't completed in the same car? Mansell starts out in a '52' Liana and finishes in it, but as he exits the hammerhead at 3:15 the car is an '03' Liana! I noticed this when watching this Top Gear on Dave last weekend.
brilliant. thanks! now can you post more vids from the archives?
How Radom! Yes I do remember the game, I remember playing it for hours and hours on end. Was so good for its time lol
Great Mansell, Wish Senna could be alive today to try that :D
The Stig was more often than not Perry McCarthy who raced in F1 a few years ago. Kovalainen was the Stig when they had the Renault F1 car round the track.
Agreed, personally I'd like to see Sir Jackie & Sir Sterling take the Liana round the track. That'd be amazing
You were nowhere near Damon's time, You We're a hell of a lot faster. Classic.
the stig is not just one person. he has been a number of people and in fact even heiki kovalinen has been the stig on one occasion (see Renault F1 around Top Gear test track).
Mansell is my F1 hero, his driving was (and still is) fantastically agresive. If there is a need to make a list of great drivers, for me is. 1.- Senna 2.- Mansell 3.- Prost 4.- Patresse 5.- Schumacher . . . 1,000,000.- Me 1,000,001.- Satoru Nakajima
Great driver, good lap. Just one thing...at 3:15 the car is a 52 plate (GX52 HFN)and...keep watching...it turns into an 03 plate (GU03 WLC). I`m sure others have pointed it out.
Anyone else notice the different registration plate on the car at about 3.16?
after watching this video I believe I can safely conclude the Mansell is the MASTER of chuckling.
Thanks for that. These sites usually have cynical replies. Yours shows you are extremely knowledgeable about the sport.
yes, mansell is definitely a hero of mine.
The Black Stig (Perry McCarthy) posted the first laptime of 1.46. White Stig did 1.44.
And that is why Senna is so admired... Look against who he had to compete! Golden times for the sport...
I second the motion
Added February 12, 2007... but first screened December 11, 2005.
nigel is an absolutely fearless driver! he doesnt like to brake, just accelerate
That blnde behind mansell.... Phwoar! :D
same i've got this in my favourites just because of her!! though think your in for a better chance - I'm living in New Zealand!
I think the stig's Johnny Herbert lol
loved that he stuffed Hill :)
mansell is not the stig, you can see him in a test in top gear track where he does a lap in ferrari 575m and jeremy does a lap with an aston vanquish in the same time...that's the stig.!
any one else notice how the car changed from being at 52 plate to an 03 plate mid lap?
Personally, I think the stig is Damon Hill, the Top Gear studio is in Dunsfold Surrey (15mins from my house) and Damon Hill lives in Hascome (next village) Having met both the stig and Damon Hill, the figure, stature physique is all strikingly similar! Bit of coincedence for my liking, including the close proximity of studio to Hills residence!
awesome driver!
Legend!
I'm not british, but i remember it was mansell who sparked my interest in F1 because of a Sega Genesis F1 racing game with his name on it. So yeah, I concur. I'll remember nigel more than damon when it comes to F1.
there has been always some drivers who are not so respected as they should be. off course mansell is legendary, but who agree he is one of the best? more people should agree with this. thumbs up if you agree.
I'd like to see the lap of Alain Prost, Ayrton senna, and Keiichi Tsuchiya.
Grandissimo Mansell. un vero Leone.
Nigel Mansell is a an upper class of a builder!
Not so sure about Damnon being Stig, it's possible I suppose but remember Damnon's score of 1.46?? Also, on youtube there's a vid where a forign news crew are interviewing the team & Stig talks... doesn't sound like Damon. These are of course just possibilities.
i think its an old indycar 94,95 i think that they used in the masters series.
There's a video on here somewhere made by some foreign programme where the Stig spoke with his helmet on. I don't claim to know who he is but he has a British accent.
Nigel Mansell is not the stig. as already pointed out the first stig was Perry McCarthy who after a brief spell in F1 became a test driver for Williams and Benetton F1 teams. The white stig is rumoured to be Ben Collins, after Richard Hammonds crash the accident report states that ben collins worked closely with top gear as a high performance driver and consultant
I would like to see Professor Alain Prost as their guest. I know this is a English show, but I would love to also see Ms. Danica Patrick as a guest as well! Also, maybe a japanese driver by the name of Keichi tsychehia.
I totally agree with ya mate.
What a living legend! shame about the master series though....
Imagine the GP Masters series with Senna in it? (RIP) THAT would be awesome!
does any body know the approximate year of the f1 car sitting there?
A great man.
nigel is the stig, same racing line, very nice, and very fast.
@carmodifire Honda had a super car coming out to replace the nsx. It was supposed to smash the GTR and teh LFA but they decided to cancel the project and concentrate more on green cars ): The new NSX was supposed to have a 5.0L V10 outputting 600bhp at 9000rpm. Although they cancelled the street version they're racing this car in the Super GT series. It's called the HSV-010. Look it up. The car looks amazing! But its running a 3.4L V8 500hp @ 10300rpm engine from formula nippon at the moment.
am big schumacher fan but i have alot respect for mansell they both are true champions ..no need for al this
he's cool. very modest and unassuming
We wanna see, Schuey, Hamilton, Moss and Stewart round the track now!
The first stig of the second series was Damon Hill... now it is 2 rallys drivers which alternate between shows Just thought it let you know ;) (my info comes from a very good source)
The Stig has done it in 1.44.4
my dad worked with him back in 1992 and 1993
I agree could easily have been a triple world champion, that year he won the Indy title was outstanding, just a shame they brought the 'yellow' out otherwise he wud have won the Indy500 aswell, awewsome driver.
nigel raced in F1 in 1994 whilst still competing in Indycar, read his auto boigraphy, he did the F1 races in between Indycar races, he didnt race in indy car and f1 at the same time in 1993, but for a period of three weeks until prost won the F1 title mansell was the reigning F1 and Indycar world champion at the same time, prost retired at the end of the 1993 season, allowing senna to move to williams
Good video!!!!
Not to mention that Mansell cut a couple of corners, the Stig didn't! However HUGE props to Mansell for being the closest to Stig's time when Button/Webber & Hill were further away. Granted Webber's was in the wet
To timickan, its bloody good to hear someone with a decent opinion on F1. Senna was great but the best ever? I dont think so, Schumacher was/is better than Senna but Jim Clark was a great drive among many other great drivers and he did it in an age where drivers were real heros. Who knows what he would have gone onto acheive had he not perished when he did. An absolute legend of a man.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who oogles at the Top Gear audience. They should put the audience in the credits!
I remember when he came here to North America to race in CART, and demolished everyone. Easily one of the best drivers of all time....
One of the greatest natural drivers of all time!!!!!!!
I believe he is one of Stig's!!
no not the same time he was Formula 1 champion in 92 went to America & drove for Newman Haas &won the title in 93, and was still racing there when Ayrton Senna died in San Marino in 94. so Nige didn't held the F1 & IndyCar championship at the same time. He became champion of the two series in consecutive years. That is his distinction from the other greats.
Thing is, living in Birmingham does that to a person. I was in Mayo (out in the country) and my pregnant friend went to the cash point, and i had my hand on the door handle read to get out if anyone tried anything with her. She comes back laughs and says "Your not in Birmingham now". Good ol' Nigel still thinking he's going to get mugged! :)
mansell brought a video out in 1994 that covered his 93 season in indy buy it download it watch it then you will know why in my eyes he is the lion heart the most underestimated f1 championship winners of all time, not 1 driver i know would put racing 1st like he did especially when it comes to their health, go mansell you are the greatest for me!.
He took Senna championchip in Estoril 89!
Any1 know what other racing drivers has done a lap. Konw about Hill, Webber and Hamliton.
Nigel rocked
The Stig couldn't be Mansell or Hill because in episode 2 of series 8, the Stig went round in 1:44.4, whereas Mansell did 1:44.6 and Hill did 1:46.3. The black Stig was Perry McCarthy, as mentioned in his autobiography. The white Stig is rumoured to be Ben Collins.
him and senna, gods
it shows that nigel was a driver and still is driver right on the edge.............top bloke
In my country it's called 'Baleno' ^^
that would be awesome
True but you do have to remember that were it not for a blow out in 1987 (I think) he would've had 2 championships, just sods law at times. Mansell was great hence his nickname
@carmodifire Yeah I know why tsuchiya started drifting and i've seen pluspy. Tsuchiya's drifting technique is unique. Alot of the D1 drivers have really aggressive drifts. Tires burn up alot of smoke etc but when tsuchiya drifts, its so elegant. Its smooth and controlled. Yes I've seen Senna drive the NSX. The nsx is a great car because senna was the NSX's test driver during development. That means if Senna wanted a car at that time it wouldve been the nsx (:
the stig is eddie irvine
Ah, clever BBC for figuring out how to get stereo sound on youtube.
U r right! Can't believe BBC would do that.
I guess they changed his car, but I don't live in the UK, what do the numbers on the plates mean?
Wow, I honestly had no idea the Suzuki could behave that well! But it's actually very wierd indeed, because the Stig's time (wish I could remember where I found this) was 1:46. Nigel Mansell > Stig?
@Rzeractor It probably has more to do with insurance costs than cornering speed.
respect
most ppl from the UK are... But he's a great driver, as so many more ppl from UK
Indeed
yeah, it happend before.. bmw put turbo chargers into them and then got like 1200 bhp... and won all the races.. then turbo chargers got banned and more restrictions so ya, hope i answered you question there
BBC, great quality!
Is this lap stil undisputed on Top Gear, (besides the Stig)
@lovegt40 Two reasons - one for safety IF they roll it and second would be for structural rigidity which in theory would make it corner quicker.
