Today, we are joined by Nigel Boston, a senior cyber security intelligence analyst who transitioned into this field in just one year. Nigel shares his journey from high school, where he was more focused on sports, to realizing the importance of a stable career, leading him to cyber security. After high school, he attended community college while working part-time, exploring different majors without a clear direction. His turning point came when he pursued cybersecurity seriously in January 2022.
Nigel emphasizes the importance of having a mentor and the role networking played in his success. He started in a help desk position and simultaneously studied cyber security through KZread, a boot camp, and hands-on labs. His dedication to learning outside of his 9-to-5 job was crucial. He created a KZread channel to document his projects, gaining experience that he could showcase on his resume.
Nigel discusses the value of boot camps, advising potential students to consider the cost, the content, and any guarantees the boot camp offers. He cautions against programs that promise jobs without providing substantial training.
