@@thedocileme4321 Good ol' Neech has a tendency to make people depressed and nihilistic. AJ Soprano is a good fictional example of what happens when very young men read my friend, Neech. His work was a good help to me in my undergrad days, but until you see nihilism as a stepping stone toward belief in something real, then you will find yourself believing that Neech didn't see any point to believing in anything. My professor put it like this: "Nietzsche is the most misunderstood man who ever lived."

I haven't read much of Neitzche. I encountered "Neitzche - A Reader" in a physiotherapists waiting room. There I encountered someone who'd written many things I felt were reasonable conclusions or ponders, based on my knowledge and experiences at the time. This was someone who wrote down ideas, questions and assertions I had, during times of intellectual escapisms. I hadn't encountered philosophy before to be honest, just a mature student studying business management concepts as widely as possible with an openness to factual or experiential work; having a bad time in life and personally trying to conceive of a workable truth that eschewed religion, embraced science and explained culture around me and gave a way to find a pathway out. 😊

The part about Nietzsche I love the most is his cutting critique of other philosophers. Especially in Morgenröte, to not only just say that he disagrees with their philosophies but to substantiate that shit so well.Felt like a declaration of war, one day somebody going to actually have the patience to sit down and thumb through his works and come to realize “oh shit, this is literally Sociopathy; the Philosopher” and ban all his shit. But until then I’ll always love reading the aphorisms I’m Beyond Good and Evil and be thrilled that a man had the freedom to say he’d rather be a bloodthirsty ruler than a docile bitch. What a legend.

Whether intended or not professor, @29:00 your description of Nietzsche as sui generis and thanking god for it had me chuckling. Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge with the masses. Additionally, I am so happy for you and your family that you have reached a level of good health. May you continue to thrive. 🙏

Priceless pontifications from the arch philosopher himself! The only regrettable thing is that the video was cut short.

Nietzsche was absolutely the prevailing intellectual background of the entire twentieth century, and remains equally relevant today.

I graduated with my undergrad in Philosophy a few years ago and yes I did read Nietzsche because I wanted to. I would agree it is probably not a good sign haha but in the in long run, very beneficial. Even if you do not agree with the premises, judgements and or criticisms Nietzsche comes to in regard to culture, christianity and society there is a lot to learn from and admire about him simply in respect to how he stuck to his ideas, was not afraid to put them forth and refused to compromise as Dr. Sugrue remarks. On another note, I could only wish to have the grasp of the western tradition and the oratory skills of Dr. Sugrue.

Love this. Michaels new perspective on these very old ideas which he read in his early life is most fascinating. Like reading Ecclesiastes
