@@Caidezes I dont think that they deserve it, they are trying to protect the human race. It may seem cruel to kill the replicants so the humans can live, but replicants will die anyway if the gestalts die

@@krucia9793 It's not about cruelty. It's about them not doing their job. They could have stopped Nier's party at any point in the story, but they didn't. Instead they played dumb until the last second and the whole project completely fell apart.

@@Caidezes i dont think it is that easy, a lot of people think that Devola and Popola are supposed to force the merging of gestalts and replicants, but that is never said in the game or anywhere. Their orders where to act as overseers, their job is to take care of replicants until they merge with the gestalts (the gestalts not being able to return to the replicants is an error after all, it wasnt supposed to happen) and that is all the information we know. Also there is a Devola and a Popola in every replicant city, and all of them did nothing but waiting, as the rest of the androids of the world, so i can only guess they were following their orders. As i see it, they only fought with Nier because he was going to kill the Shadowlord, which he did, that is what made the project to fail, not them trying to stop him.

@@krucia9793 Agreed. Plus Devola and Popola did try to persuade and warn them to turn back and not kill the shadow lord. Yes, they could have explained the whole project gestalt and stop Nier earlier instead of just talking in riddles, but even then, seeing replicants developed self-conscious, I doubt Nier would just listen and turn back (or let any shade forcefully takes replicant's body). There is no easy way around this whole mess that's for sure.

When Popola says "No one stops" before you fight her and then the Song of the Ancients starts playing, it really makes you feel heartbroken. Seeing this scene 4 times to get ending D took a toll on me. Now hearing the Song of the Ancients makes me cry because I think of that scene. 😭

I have that with moat of the songs in this. Everything reminds you of sorrow. Just a series of unfortunate creatures battling eachother to the death. No good side or bad side. No true hero and villain. Just a series of Unfortunate events. Its a miracle that something like this hasn't happened to our real world history. Irl you can usually find one side and argue that it at least is at fault. In Nier no side is at fault. Jot the Replicants nor the gestalts. Its just a stores of Unfortunate events. And thus all the song make me cry. Because they remind me of pure sorrow

Neither of them wanted to fight Nier. But they had no other choice - bound by the will of another one, a programing impossible for them to break. They are the most free Androids on Earth during the events of automata because their purpose was destroyed.

This is just my interpretation, but in my my opinion... THIS is the true final boss battle of the game. I know that Gestalt Nier (the Shadowlord) was the one who needed to survive in order to keep the dream of humanity's survival alive, but Nier only cared about saving his Yonah. Hell, he wouldn't even have become the Shadowlord if he had not been promised that Yonah would be saved. But he never cared about humanity. It is Devola's and Popola's fight that acts as humanity's final stand. And it is Devola's death (which results in Popola finally snapping, no longer caring about humanity anymore) that signals the end of the world. 4:03 is where manking was eradicated.

I remember coming near the fountain and realizing the sudden sound of lovely singing was Devola. I remember walking by the tavern numerous times and briefly catching her voice as she sang. I remember both of them doing a duet at the tavern, and how beautiful it was. I remember . . . and it all came to this. My heart hurts. 😭

One of the first things I realized when I started the game was Devola was singing the fountain song herself and would stop when you talked to her. Knew the game would be a special thing with a detail like that. Hit me really hard when it played at this boss.

Fun Fact: In the Original Nier, Song of the Ancients was a Dance. The whole fight was choreographed and when you pause the game the music stops too. The longer you fight them the harder it becomes.

@@PARIS-ARCANA They can swap places if the battle takes too long. If Popola is on the Ground she doesnt take damage. I played it on Hard Mode before and you can appreciate how good the fight is.

2:51 Devola looks so pretty. The animation and models are amazing, they really did a good job with this remake.

especially on subsequent playthrough the player starts to feel like the villain in this story, but popola’a outburst especially just hits that home. “you cut down my sister like a goddamn animal and now you want to stop!?” because yeah. we mashed those buttons that’s exactly what we did.

Honestly I really felt more like Kaine was the villain, because she heard all those Shadows. Like the little guy with P-9 robot, and yet she said nothing. But I didn't feel it with Devola and Popola tho. It was sad as hell, but honestly - they attacked you first, then were surprised that you retaliated

@@Tony-lw5yp They were running out of time. If you read the Accord Reports, it was stated that the relapsing shades are increasing and the Maso given by the Shadowlord isnt helping anymore. Also, if they told the truth, do you think Nier and the gang would accept it? Like "Ok! Lets give them our bodies to possess because its their right". Accord also states that the Project Gestalt was doomed to failed because someone put a glitch in the system. This games perfecty illustrates the saying "No one is right, only a few are wrong and everyone is screwed"

6:10 music changes and the fight continues, this part is pretty cool especially when you are playing it.

In first fight, Popola starts dancing when the lyrics begin in the background music. So actually she is singing to cast the magic. And also when you fight Popola alone, the background music is Devola's version.

Couldve sworn yoko taro made it canon that they werent really intimate or near nothing. Taro didnt want to ruin Niers character by adding a love interest. His sole purpose is Yonah. And thats what Taro intended. But i see why it can be seen as one? Where did it say it was a confirmed love scene?

This scene was acted to such perfection i didn't even notice the lack of blood It was so strong, my mind tricked me into thinking a puddle of blood was on the floor

The music picking up after Nier says "No, I'm nothing like you" is actually perfection.

I'm reminded of a quote from Doctor Who. "When you fire that first shot, no matter how right you feel, you have no idea who's going to die. You don't know who's children are going to scream and burn. How many hearts will be broken! How many lives shattered! How much blood will spill until everybody does what they're always going to have to do from the very beginning - sit down and talk!" If every involved, Nier, Kaine, the twins, the Shadowlord, had just taken the time to sit down and talk so much pain could have been avoided.

The pain could never have been avoided. Devola and Popola were trying to avoid Humanity's eventual extinction and the only way for that to happen was to stop Nier. The shadow Lord continued to fight in hope of seeing his sister again, the same reason Nier fought for. No one could talk it out, everyone there knew it was do or die.

I do not think that would have worked. Imagine if the twins had sat down and explained everything, do you think any of the others would have been like “oh okay cool, we’ll just sit here and die so some complete strangers we’ve been led to believe were mindless beasts can live”? Yeeeahh no. MAYBE if they’d told Nier the truth from the start while he was a young idealistic kid and his sister was safe, they could have managed some kind of solution, but at this point in the game? Snowball’s chance in hell.

And that is the point of the track being played there. "Song of the ancient - fates" (first battle) shows that there is quite alot at stake for everyone here and that their family is going to be smaller after the encounter, no matter what. Playing "Song of the Ancient - Devola" jsut showcases how deeply the twins cared for another, how they gave each other hope. But is this hope the goal or the warm blanket that keeps us going forward?

When you think about it the twins aren’t even the bad guys they were trying to bring humanity back. If you think about it the real bad guys are actually us :(.

In Automata, he's referred to as "The Man Who Ruined the World." Nier quite literally is the villain of the story. He brings about humanity's destruction by killing shades, and because he kills the Shadowlord, all Replicants will eventually relapse, get the Black Scrawl, and die. What they have left is borrowed time. It really is a tragic tale. He just wants to save his sister and he ends up dooming humanity and Replicants at the same time. You can't help but root for him, though.

The most evil deeds is one paved with good intentions. That's one of those messages taro wanted to portray.

This was such a stupid plan the two concocted. They're going to kill Neir and his friends and take Weiss to the Shadowlord to complete Project Gestalt. They completely ignore that Neir trusts them. A better plan would be to say the Shadowlord wants a trade: Weiss for Yonah. As single-minded as Neir is, he probably would jump at that offer.

Although this would be better, they still had more reasons to confront them like this. They didn’t plan exactly to kill Nier, they wanted to give his body back to the Shadowlord. “We need that shell of yours”The majority of the gestalts didn’t collapse because the shadowlord (original Nier/Gestalt) willfully gives them a portion of his energy because he’s the only gestalt that is immune to relapse. If he by some chance loses the will to keep doing what he’s doing, all gestalts will relapse. If he finally gets what he wants, Yonah and his body to live happily with her, he will probably guarantee to keep distributing his energy to the rest of the Gestalts indefinitely (as before he was promised to wait at least 1000 years to get Yonah back) I don’t think they were actually trying to get Weiss back as Weiss would resist the fusion even more if they actually killed Nier and the others, perhaps even risk destroying himself rather than collaborate with them (If he really recovered all his memories he must remember how he was forced inside the book in a room with teens trying to kill each other until everyone was sealed inside the books, probably not very interested in saving humanity lol)

I'm an alternate dimension, god decides humanity should be destroyed and sends an 'angel' to destroy all of reality. A human and a dragon fight valiantly to destroy to angel however interrupting the destruction of their reality accidentally transports them another universe, the Nier universe. The angel is killed in our universe but it's ashes cause a 'disease' which either turns people to salt or makes them mindless (in reality it's not a disease but rather the angel attempting to take over humans' soul. If the human accepts, they turn to monsters hellbent on destroying humanity, if they reject they turn to salt). To protect their souls, humanity comes up with the gestalt and replicant programmes separating soul and body until their remnants of the angel are gone to later be reunited. However as this game shows, things don't go as planned and the replicants form their own wills, and start fighting the souls of the humans (I.e the gestalts/shades) who they were made for in the first place. But in a sense, the souls of the old humans forcing replicants into a choice of "surrender your free will or die" is no different than what the angel did forcibly taking over humans or turning them to salt... Everyone is a villain depending on perspective... - to replicants humans are monsters trying to take over them - to humans, replicants are just malfunctioning and need to be taken over Ultimately the fault lies with god who sent the angels to start this whole string of conflict... Or is he? Just as replicants misunderstood the souls of old humans as monsters perhaps the old humans misunderstood the angels as entities wanting to destroy them... Maybe... The angel was just some higher dimensional version of devela and popola trying to reunite humans with 'god'... Just maybe... (This last paragraph is my own fan speculation). Man I love this game 🥲

NO ONE STOPS!

At first I was a bit confused, dare I say taken aback by Popola and Devola's betrayal. As I paid attention to this scene and all the previous scenes during my multiple playthroughs, I did come to realize that none of it was black and white to begin with and the sisters weren't particularly "bad" people, anymore than Nier and co. They felt bad about what they were doing because they cared about Nier, but they still proceeded to do it anyway because that is reason they were created. The story is all about various groups of people doing what they personally believe is the "right" thing, with their beliefs and actions contrasting and resulting in conflict. At the end of the day, it's hard to say who was really in the right this whole time, and likely there was never such thing objectively speaking. It's a bit tragic in any case, but it's true to life as well. I have forgiven the sisters in spite of their mistakes, and the same goes with Nier + The Shadowlord.

Replicants kind of have a catch-22 on their existences, though.

I think the most fucked up thing about this is that from the moment you walk into that room, the game doesn't stop until the very end. You don't even get a breather because the hallways leading to the Shadowlord are filled with Gestalts that you have to acknowledge are human beings.

“You and I, We are the same, tools in the hands of a master.” It wasn’t until my 3rd run through this boss when I realized she was talking about the player.

The framerate for the second phase of this fight in the base PS4 are just like the PS3 original's. They really tried to stay as close as possible to the original game. :')

Popola's scream at 6:18 is really good, but I honestly prefer the original - there's just something so raw about it, and it's a lot longer.

Playing this fight feels like making me take my dogs out behind the shed after they attacked someone. I know what I need to do and why I need to do it, but there's only one awful, awful way to do it and I derive zero pleasure from it... ... Except I realize after I put my dogs down that their breed only attacks someone to defend their pack and that they were just trying to defend me. Then I realize that the person they were trying to defend me from actually did want to kill me, and my dogs were right for defending me.

Popola's scream sent shivers down my spine.

I don't know but one voice sounds like a calm asura's wrath.

The only way to avoid all of this would’ve been communicating at the very beginning, having Weiss and Nier know what their purpose was immediately would’ve probably guaranteed the success of Project Gestalt, but lack of communication between Replicants, Gestalts, and Devola and Popola led to this

All Phoenix weapons are broken because they have the highest base ATK and MAGIC. The Phoenix 2H is the weakest of the bunch cause it’s the free one you picked up. Any of the Phoenix weapon can beat all endings easily cause their stats are so much higher than the rest.

Well, not exactly. They chose to do the "right" thing according to the people who hate them, but failed because Nier & crew stopped them. It's explained in all of the data files you get in the start of the fight, but basically, the Popola and Devola units were in charge of making sure that humanity could be brought back, and this Popola and Devola were in charge of the lynch pin of the whole plan. Since they were defeated, humans couldn't be brought back, and went properly extinct. All the other Devola and Popola units (who are different people, just the same "style" of android) are hated because of the failure of these two to defeat Nier

I still get shivers down my spine when I watch this. I think I have PTSD from this game.

all of tragedy in nier;replicants because there's no understanding about each other, different language, lack of communication, ego, it's just like US, humans today

really sad how they were made to carry out a doomed project that was already screwed up from the start. and they kept going on thinking their efforts would miraculously pay off :(

Not even the final climax but this might be one of my all time favorite climactic battles in a video game. The emotional stakes are so high on both sides that it's a complete and utter tragedy.

One of the biggest plot twists in gaming history. The first time I heard the truth, I felt my whole world crumbling around me, like the dreams in the Inception movie. It hit me with the coldest water. I sat there reading countless of time the same dialogue, trying to process what I just listened to. "All of us, every person standing in this room, are mere shells created by the true humans."

why the twins helped Nier to find Shadowlord but tried to stop him in the end? I can't quite understand the motive. I think they should protect Shadowlord by keeping the secret at all cost to save humanity.

The reason they are helping is two-fold 1. The Shadowlord stopped cooperating with the project and ran off. They needed to find him just as much as Nier did. 2. They needed to merge Noir and Weiss which requires bringing both Niers together. It was a risky plan but they felt like they were out of options. It just backfired horribly because they banked on either being able to restrain or convince Nier.

Does it count as betrayal if there weren't ever truly on your side?

I haven't play this game yet.. But now it's make sense why they feel guilt about everything.. Like the story after they died protecting 9s.. But man if they know what happened to 9s they will regret protecting 9s tho.. Not only he's destroyed every human memory he also died alone.. Real sad indeed

The way the theme turned into a solo is just so damn sad.

After finally having played like 50% of this masterpiece (still need to do route C and D), I can confidently say that during this time in the fight, I completely agree with Popola, and I genuinely felt like an awful person killing Devola. All Devola and Popola had were each other for hundreds of years, and it wouldn’t take a genius to know that you can’t just stop after having killed someone’s closest…person for said hundreds of years, and have it pan out the way you want. The moment we killed Devola, I knew that Nier (and by extension myself) and his friends were in too deep, there was no going back after that.

So, the stop speech is different. In the Original: Popola, let's stop this now. Stop? Stop? You want me to stop? You think I have the luxury to stop? You cut down my sister like an animal and you tell me to STOP? Popola, wait! It doesn't have to- No one STOPS! It's way too late to STOP! No one... STOOOOOPS!! In the remake: Popola, let's stop this now. Stop? Stop? Now you want to stop? You think you have the luxury to stop? You cut down my sister like a goddman animal and now you want me to STOP? Popola, wait! It doesn't have to- No one STOPS! It's way too late to STOP! No one...STOOOOOOPS! Of course the biggest change is the extra O and 1 less exclaimation mark in the last Stop. :3

I was killed by Popola because I felt so bad after killing Devola and I wanted to save her at least :(

I think Popola here is trying to say "how fucking dare you try to say we can end this peacefully after cutting down my sister" which makes more sense than her saying "you think I have the luxury to stop" when she hadn't killed anyone but Nier did, and so she's saying Nier has lost any chance to stop after what he did to Devola At least maybe that's what it is

Guys do yourself a favour and play this game in hard mode, otherwise boss battles like this will last wayy less.

Popola's overall performance here has a lot of dramaticized and toned-down well, tones to her voice. In Gestalt she sounds a lot less in-control with her speech and scream. It just doesn't hit the same for me. It's like the difference between silent hill 2 and silent hill 2 HD to my ears.

I like this version better you feel her true connection to her sister and how destroyed she is knowing that her other side won’t be with her anymore. As it was perfectly stated that they don’t have a soul and without a soul surviving is almost impossible. They were each others support. You can also tell devola really was the one who held popola together. I think this change was very well done. I cried even more if anything with their story

​@@Ushionai This one feels "acted" is the point. It sounds like a lot of other tragic moments in media where someone tries to sound like they've lost something dear to them. The appeal of gestalt's performance here was the rawness. It's not something a lot of media actually captures, exactly why I compared it to silent hill 2 vs. HD. The scene lost what made it stand out to me most here, the build-up from popola's grieving to her animal-like yell against her sister's murderer.

@@marthedge Thr woman lost her twin sister and now she is going to most likely spend the rest of her life without her other half and on top of that she is soulless which is even more tragic. It didn’t feel acted out it felt like an appropriate response. Why do you feel like rage is not a normal response ? Would you not rage and want vengeance is someone kills a very loved family memeber ? I would literally do anything for my family the thought of them being taken away by someone would drive me to probably kill whoever tries to lay a hand on them. It’s not unrealistic.

Song of the ancients There are different variants, this is the Devola variant.

I never played any of the Nier games and just wanted to see the boss fight with the amazing song i found a while ago, and now i have even more questions. Who tf is the half naked tomboy and why how did raiden go all the way from slicing giant robots in metal gear to slicing his moms (???) that are also robots, i guess??? Too much missed context XD

Wait how come Devola & Popola in this era can wiel magic and in the Automata era the lost it?

You realize that D&P are the model type, right? Not all iterations necessarily have the exact same skillset.

Nier should have married both Devola and Popola and chill still his last days.

They probably would've got better chances at defeating Nier if Popola wasn't dancing at the background. I mean, cool song, but probably not the best time to dance to it.

Nier, a game where no matter what happens, no one gets what they want and no one had the luxury to stop. If the Gestalts returned to their replicants the replicant's mind would be trapped within the back of the human's mind. Without the Gestalts the Replicants get sick and die.

i feel like if they would just speak a little more and calmly about how they can save humanity and convince neir and weiss to mergh with their gestalt it wouldv ended diffrently sadly when neir wants to stop popola has already lost devola and doesnt care anymore about the project she just wants devola back and i dont blame her honestly i would react the same but if the very truth was told openly in the very beggining that shades are what human was once and todays people live as replicants .if popola and devola has openly said that to neir in act one things wouldv turned diffrent when neir leaves to sthe castle devola and popopla wanted to tell him somthing they said "yeah about that" and later" never mind popola just loves to worry. i feel like they wanted to speak with him. if they speaked with him there before appearing infornt of him in the castle like they never knew him it couldv turned diffrent neir always trusted them.

What does betrayers mean

they are indeed betrayers, for both side Nier and Human. They betrayed Nier by trying to stop him from saving Yonar. They betrayed Human by letting Nier to go kill all those Shades, that is in fact, Human.
