I think Altstaedt has easily the best tone from anyone I’ve heard in this generation of cellists. Crazy good.

Wow! This video is super enjoyable. Performance, camera work and video/sound quality are all top-notch. Bravi to Mr.Altstaedt , Maestro Sanderling, the SWR Symphony Orchestra and video/audio meisters. This is an excellent example of what KZread can do as a music delivery medium... 1080P VP9 video, Opus audio @193kbps. I only wish if KZread start including WAV audio files in the downstream container and allow them to be played with 720P/1080P/4K videos even at a fee.

An excellent interpretion that fully expresses the dispair of its composer. A comparison with the Interpretation by Truls Mork with the LSO demonstrates an even greater degree of introspection.

Truls Mork is the epitome of transcendence in musical interpretation. His rendering of this Cello concerto is perhaps unique in its digital recordig.

I really like atmosphere, sound, tembre in very opening. But then... I believe it's possible to show your emotions, feelings and play technically well. Sometimes that scratchy sound is nice colour, but too much. P. S. Thanks for your interpretation! Completely different And that clarinet!!! I'm your fan. Since 5 Tchaikovsky with Teo

Me too, this gives me a vibe of micha maisky vibes of how powerful it is lmao, for some reason how he hold his cello just makes me uncomfy, like is he too tall?, or just a small cello lmao, hehe but I do like his color within the Piece :3

@@nathanrock9269 hi, sorry for this late reply. but, altstaedt is in fact quite short. he must be around 5’ 8” i believe. it’s because he’s playing a guadagnini, which is quite small compared to “standard” size strad cellos. the back of his guadagnini is 70.2 cm as opposed to the strad (around 75.5 cm). quite a large difference there.

I would like to hear his argument on why he is playing all down bows where Shostakovich marked up bow .. it’s easier to make sound great, but another reason I can’t come up with

Everything is fine, except for the glissando pizzicato touch at the very end, which, unfortunately, did not turn out very well. It is impossible to forget how Rostropovich did it, and from relatively recent performances - Knyazev and Gabetta. And the concert itself is a tragic buffoonery in the spirit of Shakespeare and Dostoevsky.
