While both versions are devasting, they feel so different. The original sounds like an bitter acceptance of life. Nico's sounds like strong grief and regret, especially when she sings "I will never look into your eyes again" and "It hurts to set you free/But you'll never follow me". The fact that she is singing a song written by a friend after his death and the way she expresses it in her version adds another layer and makes the song feel like is hers too. So personal and raw. Nico is a very underrated artist.

I love her so much.

She makes it her own, great voice.

RIP Nico. What an incredibly beautiful woman with matching musical talent. Her music was ahead of its time.

This is haunting, enigmatic, and dark; much lke the lady herself a modern day dark Ophelia like tragic vision.

Her version gives me Goosebumps you can feel her emotion Throughout the whole song 💯

She was one of the originals of what became Goth. I prefer her stuff with the Velvets but she was quite gripping live - saw her in 1982.

No - it`s not German "Angst". It`s about the darkness and the fear all in our hearts - The END. And the antidote is love. Just simple.

This is something else, I'd go as far as to say it is actually better than The Doors version. I'll admit some of her music I've heard really isn't my thing but a good 50% of her releases give me the chills & this version of The End is kinda scary, she was so far ahead of her time. Janitor of Lunacy from the "Nico - Do or Die: Diary 1982" live album has the same feeling upon me that this song does, it goes beyond words & you just feel it inside you.

There is no middle of the road with Nico. You either love her or hate her! She's been one of my favorites since 1965!

She was indeed ahead of her time. And too good for this world which is getting more and more mundane.

Its true that Nico was a heroin addict for years but the drug didnt kill her. She died from a subdural hematoma after hitting her head on the pavement due to a fall from her bicycle whilst on holiday in Ibiza. As for her son, he is still alive today & is a professional photographer.

Alors à l'époque de ce commentaire Ari allait à peu près bien même si il était toxicomane. Depuis Ari est décédé en mai 2023 à 60 ans. Il avait eu 2 avc et était paraplégique. In my opinion, she is just as captivating when it's just her and the harmonium as when she has other musicians and effects behind her. The Peel Sessions album is like that. Just her. Just mesmerizing.
