Nico - All Tomorrows Parties (Live at the Preston Warehouse, UK, 1982)

An Underground Experience is a seedy documentation of one of the most important icons of subculture. She is caught on suitably grainy video footage doing what she did best, performing in an underground club. Shot in the early 80's with punk rock as an audience the film is hardly stunning, yet this somehow enhances its authenticity. Nico's presence is both powerful and at times moving especially during the interview section.

Edie Sedgwick was the femme fatal.
In 1982/1983 Nico gave a solo concert in Utrecht, Netherlands. She sang while accompanying herself on wooden xylophones, six or more of them, small to large. After a few songs the xylophone she had played was replaced by another one, and then again another one. It was probably the most memorable concert I have ever seen. Her performance was brilliant. Unfortunately I have never found any recordings of the event.

There is just something powerful and elegant about this song. And it rocks. I've always loved it. would be great live.
Outstanding. There've been covers, but none has the devastating emotional impact of Nico's version. Legend.
She did what she wanted and lived like she wanted. I'll say that for her. She made her mark too. I guarantee she wouldn't give a fuck what any of us thought or think.

+OrangeTabbyCat ....Can't say I disagree with your sentiments Cat. I think most of these people. These artists are very, very, ambitious people. Very ambitious. Not always for money. Not always for fame even.............but for recognition, not always MASS recognition but recognition nonetheless. I think there is a certain inherent selfishness, self absorption which goes with that ambition. This is not only true of the Robert De Niro's and the Derek Jeter's and the Andy Warhol's but it is true of the second rate people who try an never really make it. I never really liked super ambitious people. I mean it. I didn't generally like them. I didn't find such OBVIOUS ambition attractive at all. Nico was a very self absorbed woman who had such a low overall view of life and people and living that she thought heroin was a better option for her son. Pretty narcissistic but consistent.

In the 70's people weren't so negative about drugs yet; i think she just wanted to share with her son what she (and many others for that matter) considered the best feeling in the world; being high on heroin. From that perspective it isn't that bad what she did.

@@Mysteriuminiquitatis1998 Nico’s music is often credited as the first gothic rock records because of the melancholic vibe, droning instrumentals, funereal drums, her harmonium and John Cale’s production. It’s the overwhelming sense of sadness, loss and gothic poetry, even her look the eyes ringed in black eyeliner, jet black hair she dyed after parting ways with Tom Wilson and Verve records and her stage presence, she was often called the ice queen, she commanded an audience it’s very reminiscent of Joy Division, The Cure, Siousxie and similar artists who later paved the way for gothic rock in the late 70s.

I know this to be true because Toots Deville told me that at their gig Nico gave her and Willy her number and said to come over and hang out. Toots said she had always loathed the vampiric Warhol and had judged Nico accordingly, not to mention expecting her to be an overbearing Hun. Pleasantly shocked to be so mistaken she found Nico to be one of the most genuine, sincere, and truly down to earth persons she ever met. And the dope was some of the best she ever had.
