Curved Air - Back Street Luv (1971)

Музыка

Curved Air are an English progressive rock group formed in 1970 by musicians from mixed artistic backgrounds, including classical, folk, and electronic sound. The resulting sound of the band was a mixture of progressive rock, folk rock, and fusion with classical elements. Along with High Tide and East of Eden, Curved Air were one of the first rock bands after It's a Beautiful Day, The Flock and the United States of America to feature a violin. Curved Air released eight studio albums, the first three of which broke the UK Top 20, and had a hit single with "Back Street Luv" (1971) which reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart.

What's surprising is that she sings a low alto line here (as a tenor, I can sing with her). Female rock or pop singers are almost always in the high female register. This low (but very clear and both strong and sensitive) voice creates some very unusual tension. Great.

RIP Francis, very sad news last week. Part of a great group of people who made one of the greatest live albums ever - 801 Live! Recorded at the Queen Elizabeth Hall with Eno, Phil Manzanera, Simon Philips, Bill McCormack and the late great Lloyd Watson, it was the first live album of it's kind with direct inputs from individual instruments to the mobile studio mixing desk. If you've never listened to it I would encourage you to do so, absolutely brilliant.

@bobair2 to me, the problem is the music itself. It's very "fake" (I guess), very little instruments, just synthesised through a computer, and there seems to be a lot less feeling within a song. They've become a lot less complex and less interesting to listen to, and the bit of good music that still comes out is suppressed because it isn't marketable anymore

They made a lot of great songs; I'd recommend that you try to find their albums and give them a good listen to, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The fellow who played keys and guitar in this video, Francis Monkman, later became a member of the Classic/Rock fusion band SKY, along with Herbie Flowers (Bass), Kevin Peek (Guitar), John Williams (Guitar) and Tristan Fry (drums) - Flowers is known for the famous acoustic bass line on Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side".
