Nicks Boots vs White's Boots vs JK Boots. In this showdown, I'm sharing my experience with the three most popular PNW boot brands: Nicks, White's, and JK.
In my opinion, they all have their pros and cons, and even if their boots might seem similar from the outside, each company has a different style that makes them unique.
I've owned 3 pairs from Nicks, and 2 pairs each from White's and JK. So while I can't speak to every boot in their entire collections, I do have some experience with these brands that I believe can help you decide which to shop with for your next new pair of boots.
I mentioned my Moc Toe comparison video. It's probably the best I've ever done. You can watch it here → • Ranking 9 Moc Toe Boot...

    You should add Franks to the list. Customer service is top notch. Quality is on par, and they have the most custom options vs any of the others mentioned.

    My opinion of my Thorogood boots changed drastically after I tried my first pair of White's. When my Thorogoods fell apart in less than a year, I decided to switch to the Perry Selects. The comfort of these boots is remarkable straight out of the box, and their build quality far surpasses that of the Thorogoods. They make the Thorogood's quality seem comparable to boots you'd find at Walmart. They're so nice that I'm hesitant to even wear them to work, because I don't want to destroy them. I can only imagine the superior quality of a pair of Nick's boots.

    Not sure if anyone will see this or care, but I strongly recommend that people truly understand what they are getting when they buy a PNW boot. He mentioned the break in is tough, and that is no joke! I bought a pair of Franks Patriots, as I had convinced myself that I wanted the toughest boots out there but did not have the money (or courage) to commit to a $600-700 flagship boot. I had to sell them because they were just too much boot. I’m glad I ended up getting the $350 Patriots instead of $600 Superduty, Smoke Jumpers, etc., but I wish I would have just gotten some RW IRs, or Grant Stones, or Jim Greens or something in the first place. I fell victim to the mindset of “gotta buy the best” but the best was more than I needed and really was not well suited to my needs.

    You actually introduced me to Nicks. I know own five pair with a couple on order. The brown waxed flesh is hard to break in, but after six months, mine have the softest upper of all of my boots. Their moc toe is amazing.

    The Perry Select was designed to address the exact issues mentioned here and elsewhere. The construction is better and the leather options are fantastic. I have the tobacco stampede and am loving that leather. The website pics don't do it justice.

    I have a situation here with Baker's Boots. I ordered White's boots from Baker's on last 25th Nov and they promised to deliver them in 3 months. After 3 months, I've contacted them about the boots and they said it's pushed 2~3 months due to the blackfriday orders. After another 3 month, 26th May, I mailed and said since it's passed 6 months passed if it's not ready, I would have to cancel the order. Then she said I have to pay 30% 'restocking fee' to cancel the order. 'Unfortunately, this is out of our control, the factory is still trying to get caught up from Black Friday. You would need to pay a 30% restocking fee if you want to cancel the order.' - this is what she said and never have said sorry for my time and patience. Do you think 30% restcking fee is fair for this kind of situation?

    For me the biggest reason I went with PNW is the arch support, along with natural material and USA made. I went with Nicks, and love them. Next time I think I'll go with Whites because they claim to have the best arch support.

    Hands down, a handsewn stitchdown from Whites is the best. People who get Nicks dont know any better. JK is tough but thats all they do and there’s nothing wrong with that. Wesco has never hit the mark for me. Frank’s is a strong second best, the best stitchdown only offering.

    I really enjoy my White's Perry Moc toes. I own 2 pairs already. They are built well and hold up well for work boots. Ordered another pair of the Perry selects. I think its a better boot then the Red Wings. Red Wings are not what they once where. They have cut back on quality materials in the new boots. I am also thinking about a White MP service boot in Kudu leather that just came out. And, Whites will customize boots if you ask them. So, I own Whites and Danner's and Red Wing and even a pair of Thursday's Moc Toes. They are my weekend boots. I think for the price, Whites are best. And, if money is not object, then you get Nicks. Thanks for another nice video..

    This comparison is incomplete without adding Frank's Boots into the mix. Frank's has fewer models to choose from compared to White's or Nicks but there are various classic logger-style boots and heritage models to select from, built as-good or better. What sets Franks apart from the other three is customer service and personal attention to fit and styling. Frank still does things the way Nicks USED to do it when Frank was managing things over there, as compared to modern Nicks that seem to give customers more options in lieu of personal service in order to push more sales volume. You know, like White's does, which is ironic given that Frank's way is what used to set them apart and make Nicks really shine.

    What is the difference between the rolled welt that White’s offers and a Norwegian welt?

  • @BootSpy

    @BootSpy

    2 ай бұрын

    A Norwegian welt is a separate piece of leather stitched into the upper - whites sort of does this same thing, but with the flanged out upper, rather than a separate welt. I could be misremembering the specifics since it’s been a while since I saw it being done, but it’s super cool

    I have boots from these three brands, too. I'm not sure that I would say all the exact same things about the brands or the models because I may have slightly different models and things, but I got the OT and will wear them soon, but I wish they were easier to get in the fit proper off the bat and don't need the roughout bottoms, etc., but less jarring for those who don't expect the arch support or want high logger heel? Nick's seem to fit better overall than other two BUT the moc toe is also maybe can come with or without the arch? I know the White's doesn't have and from last vid where I went all thru the selections but don't recall what the final result was but I already have plenty moc toes that I don't need Nick's or RW any time soon, anyway.

  • @Highland_Paddy

    @Highland_Paddy

    I could say a lot more here, I guess. I'm this and that and must point out that Made To Order is a better term than "custom" because they are not fitted and sized the same as true custom shoes, but fun to use the Wesco "custom" menu thing but don't expect to want to wait 18 months for a pair any time soon, but maybe sometime I will order from them and compare. You also didn't go into detail about the tongue protectors and the different outsoles.

  • @Highland_Paddy

    @Highland_Paddy

    2 ай бұрын

    I probably should have taken the opportunity to return the White's ones I got for a wider width BUT then that outsole sticks out so far that I'm already afraid to try ever driving in them because I already don't like when some other boot like Thursday gets caught on the brake pedal from underneath, etc.

    Generally agree with all of this with the asterisk that the White's MP line is pretty slept on. Nicks are really good but they seems to push harder into their builder pro history than White's does; if you're loking for more heritage stuff, even though Nick's has more interesting leathers, I think the White's lineup with their MPs and similar are more interesting to me from a heritage standpoint. I *want* to like Nicks a little more than I do, but it always seems like everything is V100 sole based. They're all good, but if you're looking for more heritage, I kinda like White's more. White's is more $$$ though.

    I have a very flat foot and for the longest time I absolutely hated boots because of their stiff arch. I got a pair of JK O.Ts about a month ago and although the break in hurt for about a day because of the arch, they are the most comfortable boots I have ever worn. So much so that I wore them for the entirety of a weekend long Disney trip. Honestly I was super surprised just how much the boots mold to your foot.

    Nick's: The six month wait wasn't fun but my Tacticals are the best (and most expensive) boots I've ever owned and since I measure myself correctly, they fit like an absolute glove. Unlike the Danner's I used to wear, they're all leather, none of this half leather half nylon nonsense. People on YT have asked me how I was able to to get a pair with composite toe; it appears it's no longer an option. I'll definitely buy another pair (perhaps their work Chelsea). White's: Two pair of moc toes, the Perry Select in Tobacco Stampede and their wedge hybrid in black (and I dyed the stitching to do a blackout look). I tried Red Wings (they have one in Long Beach) and there were just 'meh'; not bad but just wasn't in love with them. Also no long wait time. JKs: Was lucky to get a pair of 300Xs when they were in stock; great customer service and a phone call from them when they shipped. I don't care for the soft toe and really thin tongue that the backing on the hooks was starting to tear apart before I put kilties in them (they were my first pair of 'real' boots). The leather on my pair was really wrinkly (like when your fingers get when you've been in a jacuzzi too long) and I can't get a shine on them and I had a ton of heel slip before adding a new insole. Sadly they're my car wash boot because I don't care if they get wet since they used some sort of heavily oiled tannage...also got a ton of thumb down reviews on their site.

    Great video, William. Very informative! I totally agree with you on Whites “hand sewn Stitchdown” construction. It really catches the eye and make people stare. I like to order Whites through Bakers, the parent company. I think Whites may have a wider variety of heritage leathers than Nicks, who rule them all when it comes to work leathers. The Bakes/Whites “Bounty Hunter” in Latigo leather are beautiful boots. Their double-stuffed burgundy is another awesome leather.

    I own Red Wing and Whites Perry Select moc toes and to me Whites is far superior. It has thicker and higher quality leather and leather components and in general a beefier construction, yet way more comfortable than the lighter Red Wing with its uncomfortably narrow last and non-existent arch support. I can wear the Whites all day long with no foot fatigue and cannot say the same about the Red Wings.
