Nicholas Wade: the case for the Covid lab-leak theory

The so-called lab-leak hypothesis for the origins of Covid-19 has been gaining more and more traction in recent months. Once dismissed as a crankish fringe theory, it has slowly been entering into mainstream scientific discussion. Just this week, America’s CDC Director said that it was ‘possible’ that Covid could have leaked from a lab as ‘significant circumstantial evidence’ emerges.
One analyst who has made a significant contribution to the debate is Nicholas Wade, a former reporter at the New York Times, who recently self-published a piece detailing how the lab-leak theory isn’t just a possibility, it is (in his view) the most likely explanation. Though there is no definitive evidence for either theory, Wade argues that the key details are easier to explain within the context of a lab leak origin, as he tells Freddie Sayers on LockdownTV.

It turns out that this Peter Daszaks was engaged in orchestrating the Lancet article "researchers" who insisted that the SARS-Cov2 virus was a naturally occurring virus, nothing to do with a lab. He had huge self-interest in trying to lock that narrative into place as he was directly involved with the lab in Wuhan in the neighborhood where the disease first was reported. But there was a flub in calling it the "Wuhan Flu" as other researchers said it was circulating in California in the Fall of 2019, prior to the first reports out of China. The "Blame China" crowd have a political incentive suppress that information.

Cynthia Allaire Just speculative but could other laboratories have been given the virus, or recipe for it, to collaborate on vaccine research. Was the vaccine research the cause of the release in multiple locations, accidentally through human trials, before the infection potential of the virus was fully comprehended. The reason for "cooking up" such viruses in Wuhan was to investigate whether vaccines could be created to combat them. Other countries wouldn't be permitted to create the viruses but I'm guessing that vaccine research was allowed requiring samples of the viruses. Yet another conspiracy theory to add to the multitude already in circulation.

Science _is_ about investigating the nature of reality. It just so happens that knowledge gained through science can lead to power, and power goes hand in hand with politics. It's hard to divorce science from politics even if most scientists are just quietly getting on with pursuing things about reality that fascinate them. As for funding. Meh, science is generally quite an expensive thing and it's hard to convince people to spend money on "we may discover something we didn't know before" without making it sound awesome in some way. Even space exploration needs to tap into the prospect that we may get something back from it all when convincing the penny holders to invest. For the scientist it's often about exploration, for the person who funds the scientist's work it's often about what can be done with what the scientist's find. Coming more close to home with respect to this video. Don't take the guy's word as gospel. It's a hypothesis. He's going "I've got these dots that I think are true, _if_ the dots are connected in this manner then this means...". It's a "this might be true", not a "this is true". It's important not to forget that.

They are an international organisation whose area of expertise can lead to them needing to give economically or socially harmful advice and they sometimes have to deal with very powerful governments. It's all just people having meetings, talking, sharing knowledge and all to varying degrees of honesty and competence. It varies from person to person and nobody knows everything that's going on. There's no way to make the dynamic perfect. Real boats rock and shit happens. Sure, if someone gets found to have caused harm through dereliction of duty, being dishonest or just being too incompetent then they need to be addressed. However first it needs to be shown that this really is the case. When the blame game starts the reality can easily be that, despite all the mud flinging, nobody has actually done anything they shouldn't have. Not that I think that's true here for some of the things China is accused of wrt Covid but I am wary of people who seem too eager to find a person to blame

Governments around the world...especially from developed countries...are quiet about gain of function research because they're the ones who fund it. During the Obama administration, it was being funded by the US, but he placed a moratorium on this type of research. But Fauci, who was a proponent of it, found a way to get around the moratorium when trump became president. Rather than doing this research in their own countries, since regulations regarding dangerous pathogens are more strict and the general public is against it, it's easier...and cheaper...to outsource it. And if there is ever an escape, the country doing the research can be blamed. When the virus started to spread in the fall of 2019, trump knew where it came from and blamed the Chinese, but his administration funded it...and congress...which controls the purse strings of our government...approved the funding. So in essence, both political parties...along with scientists who do this research...have a strong incentive to keep quiet about their part in 'creating' this pandemic.

Governments put pressure on the tech companies to eliminate 'fake news' on vaccines and masks etc. The inevitable consequence was that anything remotely critical of the 'orthodox' approach to the pandemic (which emerged almost overnight - no pre-pandemic planning included either lockdowns or masks) has been summarily deleted. In the US, there is now a very odd situation in that the CDC's advice on mask wearing and social distancing is being deliberately ignored by some politicians who, just five minutes ago, were ready to cancel and destroy anyone not 'following the science'.

Hypotheses form and are researched until a consensus forms around a theory till it's challenged and the process begins anew. Well, that's the theory in the philosophy of science, as written by Thomas H Kuhn. Regrettably it's not functional in the politicised research world full of billionaire philanthropists funding results based science seeking to confirm pet theories. Science needs funds but not with strings attached meaning they become the puppets of those giving the funding. If politicians weren't so in awe of these billionaires influencing decision making we'd be able to have a serious discussion on the validity of the research they fund.

Nevermind the investigations of the WHO team that debunks that theory, all they need to is a rumor of two Wuhan lab employees going to the hospital for an illness. No need to investigate that, it's all the proof needed that the virus escaped from the Wuhan Lab.

Often in science indirect evidence is all you have. Take nuclear decay, for example. We know that it occurs, but not exactly how. The weak nuclear force mechanism remains one of the mysteries of nature. The same can also be said of gravity on the atomic scale. We don't need to know exactly how covid leaked from the Wuhan lab to be quite certain that it leaked from the lab. Science is generally about most likely explanations rather than absolutes.

I noticed that too. There are certainly parallels with our society, money supply, an politicians, that prefaced the collapse of that once great Empire. Sir John Glubb wrote a very interesting paper on the collapse of Empires that makes great reading. My long held view is that even before this pandemic the signs of a collapse of the Western Economic ideology was imminent and with the focus on a vaccine, promoted by vested philanthropists, and further Climate Change modelling forming the basis for another science based solution, I think that the failures of science won't be permitted to be solved by more science likely creating even more problems for it to solve, all creating the potential for economic growth, the driver of the free market Western Economic dream that it'll lift all from poverty. The virus has hit, and continues to hit, those most wounded by economic growth filling the pockets of the wealthy and growing middle classes. If Climate Change hadn't shown the falsehoods of perpetual economic growth this pandemic confirms it - the poor get poorer as the planet is stripped bare by the wealthy and their support act, a growing middle class, happy to take the lifestyle bribe they're offered. We face the collapse of our economic system and all it supports, particularly those who benefitted most by defining their own alleged value within it.
