WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

    Exactly. I've never really believed in God and I've given money and food to charities. I also volunteered at the red cross for a couple years; volunteered to help a local school get used computers and funding for other stuff; been a mentor at a school for under privileged kids; heck, I even volunteered at a church for about 6 months even. And no, I did not attend that church or anything. They simply had a program that I thought was worth while and there wasn't any real religious recruitment or anything going on in it. Bottom line, if you think you are a good person then you don't need the fear of eternal hell to get you to do good things... or to stop you from doing evil things.

If someone uses evidence to build their beliefs/worldview why wouldn't they use evidence or its lack to inform their god beliefs? Stop believing contradictions and your life will become demonstrably better. If you believe in an eternal supreme creator that is sufficient to the foundation of reality, then you believe in a contradiction. If you believe in a god that is both absolutely just and forgiving, then you believe in a contradiction. If you believe in a god that wants to know you but remains perfectly hidden, then you believe in a contradiction. Stop believing in contradictions.

    The problem with the utilitarian argument is that it can't differentiate between conflicting beliefs. It also can't argue for any specific set of belief. In fact quite the opposite - of utility is the metric, you should believe WHATEVER is most useful in a given set of circumstances.

  • @Nocturnalux

    @Nocturnalux

    2 жыл бұрын

    I lean toward troll. Not so much because of what he said, as very deranged have called into the show and odds are most were for real, but because there have been enough calls that follow the pattern of ‘hi, my name is so-and-so and I just came from church’ that turned out to be trolls. Also, I found it a bit strange how when asked why he believes, he starts a sentence- stops- and goes for ‘gambled my soul to Satan at age 6’. And the unnecessary detail- several times he mentioned a particular state- is something liars often do. Of course, it does not mean this guy is a troll. I just get ‘Stone Church’ vibes from the caller.

    He talks about his god being the source of morality. He then says that if his god exists he has to fear it and submit to it. That kind of morality is how the mafia operates. We have laws against that kind of stand-over thugs because it's only morality is immorality. It is also noticeable that he said he fears and submits to his god. Sounds like cowardice to me. yet claims that it is atheists who live in fear and are cowards. I can tell you this Nicholas, who lies about being with demons, if the god you describe does exist it is a piece of sh*t for requiring you to submit. It is a god that needs to be spat at, not worshipped. But then, since your god's supposed rules in your bible, permit and encourage racism, slavery, infanticide, genocide, murder, prostitution, misogyny and homophobia then that immoral piece of invisible thuggery is the most harmful thing inb the universe. Fortunately, not real, so don't care about the god. OTOH, I have a real problem with the theists that try to introduce theist immorality into classrooms and laws. But apart from that I am fine with your beliefs.

  • @artistjoh

    @artistjoh

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@snooganslestat2030 There was a time when I would have been relatively sanguine about the submission thing, but the last couple of decades have taught me that it is a problem. Firstly, radical Islam has given us too many believers who submit to the point where they strap bombs to their body, or fly aircraft into buildings Surely these people should be thinking independently of the and instead of submitting to the religious mania of the moment and the obvious immorality in killing innocents. In the US there has been a problem in which evangelicals have been supporting autocratic overturning of a democratically elected new administration. While it is easy to blame those onn the looney fringe, like Qanon, Proud Boys, etc, it is frightening how many normal everyday evangelicals have supported the insurrection, and all the immorality of the violence that was part of assaulting the Capitol on January 6th. I think at least part of the problem is that hard core evangelicals are so invested in the concept of Jesus as a spiritual king, that they have to submit to dictates of the god, and they buy into the essentially racist concept of a "chosen people," that they are primed to support those with autocratic tendencies. We also have the situation with Ukraine in which Patriarch Kirill has been strongly encouraging the invasion of Ukraine as if it is a holy war. Kirill has a huge influence over Russian Orthodox believers and these people appear to not be questioning why their church leader is advocating genocide in Ukraine. Instead they submit to him as the representative of god on Earth. I can cite theists strongly opposing every major moral issue of the last 200 years as their church leaders cite scripture in opposition to doing the right thing. This was true of slavery, of giving women the vote, and legalising homosexuality, which is an ongoing battle. However, the most heinous thing is reading the chroniclers of the Crusades. These people with usually monks, and would have considered themselves good people, submitting to the wishes of god. After the Crusaders had massacred 6,000 women and children in one city, the chronicler wrote that he wept with joy at being able to walk ankle deep in the blood of these victims, because, he said, in killing them the soldiers of god had saved them from a life of sin. Throughout history we see so much injustice caused by submission to the current religious belief, and so much of it is associated with submitting to dogma rather that saying "wait a minute, I refuse to submit to these horrors. There is a better morality than that found in the religion, and I refuse to submit. Refusing to submit is all to often the only right thing to do.

    I have given out blankets, money, clothes and food to homeless people. I've seen people with fish on the back of their cars drive right past a person with a sign ,'Vietnam vet. Hungry. Anything will help.' I turned around and bought a meal from McDonald's to give him. I to was a Catholic. Stopped the fantasy con decades ago. My parents would take me and my family to miracle sites in Louisiana, Florida, Iowa and Minnesota to name a few. Many people there were sincere about seeing things. I was a kid. I wasn't a skeptic. I wanted to believe what my parents believe because I love them dearly. I saw nothing. I was an alter boy, in choir, taught CCE, attend numerous retreats and overnight novinas, spent 12 years in Catholic schools. Nothing. As grew up I still saw nothing. Wasn't looking for it. But there was no reason. I don't hate my parents or their faith(althouh the church is grift and criminal himan abuse ring). I believe they believe. And what I saw were two great people helping people because they are good people I now have run several successful businesses. Which I hope my employees appreciate. I'm happy I play a snall part in feeding their families. Now I'm semi-retired and have been running a dog rescue for years. All this with no god required. I had tough times just like anyone but not once did I ask for divine intervention. THAT sounds like cowardice to me.

    The correct time to believe a claim is when the evidence simultaneously eliminates all other (known) possibilities, and supports/is consistent with the remaining claim. If both are not true, you either don't have evidence for the remaining claim, in which case you have to reject that claim, or you have multiple claims that fit the evidence in which case you can't say which is correct and thus need to investigate more.
