NHL on NBC Final Broadcast

Спорт

The NHL on NBC came to an end on July 7, 2021 after a 15 and a half year run. This video features the farewells of the broadcasters following Tampa Bay winning the Cup for the second time in a row. In the 5th game, Lightning defeated the Montreal Canadiens 1-0 on home ice. Due to the pandemic, the season started in January and was shortened to 56 games, leading the finals to go into July.
Includes both the NBC and NBCSN segments. The entire end montage was not included due to length, however it can be found on the NBC Sports channel.
In October 2021, ESPN/ABC and Turner Sports (TNT/TBS) with now hold the rights.
Thanks for the memories.
NHL on NBC 1/14/2006-7/7/2021

It has also kind of gone full circle regarding the Albert family because NBC from 1990-94, also broadcast the NHL. Granted, it was only the All-Star Game, but it was still a very big deal for its time. For virtually the entire 1980s, the NHL was nowhere to be found on American network television, save for Game 6 of the 1980 Stanley Cup Finals on CBS. Marv Albert was the play-by-play announcer for NBC when they annually broadcast the All-Star Game beginning in 1990. He worked alongside John Davidson. Doc Emrick was the ice-level reporter in 1990, with Bill Clement in that role in 1991-92, and 1993. Ron MacLean, from Hockey Night in Canada, assisted NBC with their All-Star Game coverage in 1993. Also, Al Albert, Marv's brother Kenny's uncle, was the play-by-play announcer for NBC's future sister network, USA's final "official" NHL telecast, Game 5 of the 1985 Stanley Cup Finals.

When NBC lost the baseball package to CBS after the 1989 season after having the sport for 42 years, the final voice that you heard was arguably the greatest baseball broadcaster ever in Vin Scully. When NBC broadcast their final NBA game in 2002, the man who called it was Marv Albert, arguably the greatest NBA announcer ever. And when NBC closed out their NHL coverage in 2021, the final voice that you heard (technically not on the main NBC network but still) was arguably the greatest NHL announcer ever (at least to American TV viewers) in Doc Emrick.

Not to mention when CBS aired their last NFL game under the NFC contract (the 1993 NFC Championship Game a week before Super Bowl XXVIII on NBC) in January 1994 (until their 1998 AFC return), the voice was none other than Pat Summerall. Perhaps we will see some of the on-camera personalities come back to an on-air gig in some way, shape or form again in the years to come. While I won't miss the NHL on NBC too much, I'm not too crazy about ESPN/ABC getting the NHL back. While it wasn't bad with ESPN, it was a bomb when ABC had it last (especially after acquiring the NBA). Plus 75% of their games exclusively on streaming services? Not liking it, but who knows? Maybe they learned from their mistakes in the 2000s. As for Turner sports, I'll give it a chance. From what I'm hearing, they're more of the primary rights holder than secondary (depending on how you look at games exclusively on streaming services), so it seems fans are getting the better deal with Turner.

Because ESPN back when they had the NHL fully focused on sports and truly lived up to their name as The Worldwide Leader in Sports. Over the years after they stopped covering the NHL, ESPN changed its agenda completely. They'd rather talk about the more popular sports in basketball and football, talk about certain athletes and disrespect hockey and baseball (which I don't get baseball, since ESPN still airs MLB and college baseball games). The social issues are a little annoying, especially if it's an issue outside of sports and they tend to pressure athletes to let them be known in play, but I don't hate ESPN because of that. Some issues in sports need to be pointed out. But most of what I mentioned are the reasons we're not excited for the NHL coming back to ESPN. That and Gary Thorne and Bill Clement aren't coming back to call games

I know ESPN in 2011 got into a bidding war with NBC and FOX and others dropped out, but NBC ultimately signed on for $200 million a year for 10 years. How much did ABC/ESPN bid? Was it more but not enough at time to unseat the incumbent? I know ESPn wanted hockey back for a long while, but I imagine they were careful not to overpay as they did form 2000-2004. Though NBC paid more3 per year at $200 million per year from 2012 to 2021 than ABC/ESPn paid in $120 million per year from 2000-2004. Cause when you say ESPN/ABC (Accidently CBS in originall post) should have taken over Fall 2011, did they outbid NBC, but NBC prevailed because Bettman still wanted a network that he thought (Even if wrongly so) would give it more attention back then?? Or did ESPN/ABC lose the money amount to NBC/NBCSN in 2011?? Now in 2021, ESPN/ABC get it back.

@@jasonarokiaraj9817 Yeah interesting. Did NBC actually win the bidding war legit, or did NHL just want to go with them regardless of money in 2011. I know NBC paid $200 million per year? And I think Versus like $100 million per year before Comcast purchased both. DO you know how much ESPN/ABC offered back then and if it was more or less or close to amount NBC and Versus offered before they signed the 10 year deal?
