How can you say Carolina played well defensively...the game was 3-2...the shots are even so that means the Lost Leafs played well defensively also???? The Leafs are not capable of playing well defensively???? Next observation ...Marner ...temperament about the level of a Batam player....game after game when things go bad he's off in some corner whining and banging his stick or shooting the puck after whistles...trade the child he is no t worthy of an A....trade Rielly, Domi and Marner perhaps you can pick something up for them...someone with a little heart and toughness.

​@@williamcavanagh8982it's not all about the shot clock, quality of shots is more important. You can shoot from the point without a screen and it still counts the same as a slot shot. Carolina limited Toronto's quality chances to a minimum.

​@@williamcavanagh8982 I'm a Leafs fan, and I never said they didn't play well defensively. Ultimately they just made a couple mistakes too many on the PK, but didn't allow any 5v5 goals. They definitely struggled to generate a lot against this Carolina defense, though. Every time the Leafs had the puck, they would get pressured and be forced to make a quicker play than they would like. The Leafs had very little space out there.

But your forgetting one thing quality or not all shots can go in that's why they're counted in the first place. You may also know that quality or not one must have a goaltender who is able to stop the shot and a defensive group that wants to prevent the shot...neither of which the Lost Leafs have...so jump back on the cabbage truck you fell off of and observe a little more closely. @@juhomantynen4638

At least one game where we allowed sub 4 goals and goalie save% was around .9. That being said, yeah. Our offence was dominated by Carolina. Marner and Willy on a lazy pass and release on the Empty Net, where otherwise we might have even tied the game. Hopefully we come back better, but the team wasn't completely horrible defensively, which is a good sign at least, and Jones making some saves kept the team on the game until the end. Carolina definitely deserved the win today, ggs

Two power play goals, I wonder where the heck one of the best penalty killers on the team is, Keefe? Oh right, you benched him.

As usual, the Leafs are now practicing their golf swings for the start of golf season in April.

Once Svechnikov came back it seemed to wake Aho up, both have been amazing this week

We knew going into the season that the D core was needing an upgrade, that need hasn't changed. It was extremely disappointing to see Kampf scratched, I am guessing to send him a message, REALLY, SERIOUSLY?????? Keefe doesn't have the stones to sit some of the $40,000,000 that other than AM34 has zero defensive mindset. This was not a defensive flop by the Leafs tonight, they were mostly focused and sometimes you just have to tip you hat to the other guys. I think that since you probably can't procure the D-men that we need without trading Nylander, it may be time to bring a more "demanding accountability " coach to change the locker room vibe. We won't get cap relief to build from the crease out until JT's contract is up or we don't resign Marner, or both. Vegas didn't win a cup by playing "pretty, stretch pass, fancy, highlight reel" hockey. They put their work boots on and played structured sound hockey, with an average goalie.

Anyone else watch the live broadcast and notice the 2 Leafettes dancing in the stands after they scored the meaningless goal to cut it to 3-2 with 9 seconds left....LOL!!!

Keefe coaching is an absolute joke! The entire team looks like a rudderless ship night after night. Time to make Keefe a healthy scratch

It's way too easy to blame Samsonov or Jones or whoever might be in net, but the Leafs' team D is just atrocious. The only chance they have to win games is to keep possession of the puck as much as possible. As soon as they lose it, it's an absolute comedy of errors.

the leafs are a such a joke of an organization. It's basically a sitcom at this point.

Its crazy how fragile people over are over the ebbs and flows of a hockey season.

Kypreos is always saying that the core 4 is played too much and I’m starting to think he’s right. Nylander looks like he’s out of gas. Keefe is mismanaging these guys. I think Keefe needs to go for multiple reasons but this is one of the big ones. They’re getting leaned on so much that in moments when they’re needed the most they’re already too gassed to do anything. If this continues I can see the Leafs just losing a lot of games. Sure it’s a back to back but even so athletes in the prime of their careers should have more legs than they did tonight

But with the team structure, who else are they going to 'lean on' to pick up extra minutes? Management made a decision long ago to give the ball to Matthews Marner Nylander and Tavares, and Treliving has done nothing to change that. Keefe has no other options.

@matt7352 Keefe has to play these four figure skaters way to much if they want to win games. They have to out score teams to win because they are weak on D and goal. Top heavy on offense and crappy on the back end. Keefe is trying to keep his job as this team is not balanced. The key four get over played almost every game and as the season goes on their tanks will empty. Their not build for the playoffs and we're in for a similar result this year. Time for some change? Maybe bringing in a new coach that preaches DEFENCE might get them through the first round. The way they play is exciting, but it's not a recipe to win playoff hockey with the group they have in place. So we get the same results. The top four let up and take a game off and we see the result in the loss column. Time to shake this group up?

Brind'Amour sure has his team playing much better than earlier in the season. Carolina dominates in the first two periods. Leafs make it close in scoring in the third. But it wasn't close. Carolina is a much better, balanced team

Leaf defense is almost nonexistent while Carolina played very well defensively. One exception with the Leafs though is that Mathews, while a forward, at 9:25 of the first period stopped a second Carolina goal from being scored. So Mathews is playing defense as well as offense. What are the Leafs doing to shore up their defensive capability? I don't know the answers to that; I only hear rumors and they are just that--rumors. And rumors don't produce wins or get you into the playoffs.

Well ChilledSky I went back and carefully watched that replay several times. I see a situation where Martin Necas #88 intercepts a pass from a Leaf player in the Carolina zone. Then both Necas and Jesperi Kotkaniemi #82 are racing up the ice with only Mathews trying to check the puck from first Necas, then Kotkaniemi. Mathews is then right on Kotkaniemi who almost puts the puck in a vacant space left by Samsonov but Mathews quickly misdirects the puck back out and away from the goal line as a Leaf pile up starts to occur around Samsonov. Mathews, as a forward, hardly played offensively tonight because he could see that his defense team mates were dead and totally ineffective. But I have to ask: How can it be Mathews' fault when his specialty on the team is as an offensive forward--not as a defenseman? That's all I can ask because that is what I saw on video after several plays and I cannot argue with that. And with that I send you a very Happy New Year greeting for 2024. Happy New Year and Go Leafs Go.

The Leafs best D guy is a senior citizen. Doesn't that tell you something? If Keefe doesn't play the top four into the ground each game this team doesn't win. Coaching is desperate most games to come from behind and get a goal. Not a recipe for success and going anywhere in a playoff run. Time for some change and it will come in 2024.

For as much as I hated Bunting last year...he's probably my favourite Ex-Leaf of All-Time right at the moment 😀

Does Toronto even have a top 6? Last few games they've been hard to spot, especially on defense.

It's because of the way Keefe sets the lines. Reilly and Gio are the 2 best d men they have but when their stuck with Lilegren and Brodie, it makes a difference. Then, he benches Kampf because of his role in the loss to Columbus

Was at the game and a clear observation is how slow they are in person. What happened? Roberston although he scored was falling a lot and couldn’t pass at all. I would be ok if he is sent down.

Leafs unable to enjoy home ice advantage lately.

Toronto is still terrible in its own end. IMO, it's not the goalie's fault. We need a better puck-moving defenseman/men to advance the puck and get it out of the defensive zone. I wonder how Treliving Jr going to take it being called out by his coach? Be-Rad and Shanny must be talking about moving on from Coach Shelly.

Eh. In the past, worse teams at this point have made it further in the playoffs than the Leafs have. Florida comes to mind. With that said, the Leafs can limp into the playoffs and still make a splash in the playoffs. Just like when its a big W people will say regular season doesn't matter.

The leafs couldn’t pass effectively or prevent puck turnovers to save their lives this game. No motivation after losses to bottom standing teams. Keefe needs to go. Buy out his contract and get a coach who at least got a team to a cup finals. Get rid of Samsanov, bite the bullet and let go of one of the 4 to free up cap space for better defensemen. It would actually be a good thing if the Leafs missed the playoffs if it means getting rid of Keefe.

Leafs look they are headed to a big time regular season decline. We all know this edition isn’t playoff material. It now just is a surprise to see their pattern of losing to Buffalo & Columbus & weak teams in the regular season down to Wildcard Points on average.😀

Wow! Its like the leafs are already playing playoff hockey. Canes play hardnosed hockey thus Marner Matthews Nylander and Pyjama boy disappeared 😅

Leafs fans just want their goalie to give the team a chance to win. Jones gave them a chance tonight, they were just outplayed by Carolina. If they had 82 games of goaltending at this same level, they will be ok.

Next observation ...Marner ...temperament about the level of a Batam player....game after game when things go bad he's off in some corner whining and banging his stick or shooting the puck after whistles...trade the child he is no t worthy of an A....trade Rielly, Domi and Marner perhaps you can pick something up for them...someone with a little heart and toughness.
