The three swirls in the Ottawa flag represents the three rivers that run through the city. Ottawa, Rideau and Gatineau rivers

The tree in the middle of the updated Montreal flag is to symbolise the two major indigenous groups from the area

The fact that Calgary has a cowboy hat in their city flag is amazing

The lightning bolts around the logo in the Buffalo city flag represents electricity. One of the city’s nicknames is “City of Lights” Buffalo was the first city to have widespread streetlights in the 19th century. (Cleveland was the first city to ever have electricity)

Fun fact about the Denver flag. It was designed by a student at North High School back in the 1920s. She beat out other designs that were submitted. But the city liked hers out of all of them.

I think the cowboy hat C would be a phenomenal shoulder patch on a Flames jersey.

The Toronto flag is off center because it is meant to resemble the city hall buildings

The lightning bolts in the Buffalo flag symbolized being one of the first cities with electricity. The boat is a call to Lake Erie.

Not only does it look like a t on the Toronto flag but it is also the shape of the town hall building

In regards to the Winnipeg flag, the "weird castle thing" is actually the entrance of Fort Garry , which was the original name of the settlement before it was incorporated into a city, now Winnipeg. The fort gate still exists today and has been integrated into a park.

The LA city flag has a lion with a crown on it. Kings used something similar in those purple/black jerseys. They had the lion holding up a hockey stick.

the detroit flag got snubbed for sure. the us parts are obvious, the lions represent the english, and the fleur de lis represent the french founders of detroit. i’ve always thought this flag looks sick and it’s great seeing them in the stands at dcfc games

IMO Chicago and DC are way too low, they're amazing flags and in my ranking are 2 and 3, behind STL.

in my new nhl history concepts i used city/state/provincial flags for inspiration like crazy. 15 of the 32 concepts had colors intentionally associated with their flags. i LOOOOVE flags! it's kind of my party trick to "name that flag" sunrise's flag is probably just the city seal on a white background, that would be a common theme in south florida.

Your description of the Ottawa flag sounded like a lucky charms commercial.

Glendale (and also Tempe now) are referred to as separate "cities" but honestly they're anything but. They're both part of the greater Phoenix metro area, so much so that you don't even know when you've left Phoenix and entered Glendale or Tempe. It's all just one big sprawling grid that's randomly divided up into chunks under different names with slightly different governance. I guess some people from here might get a bit touchy of you told then that but it's all considered Phoenix.

Raleigh's flag looks like the flag of Peru Seattle hosted the Goodwill Games in 1990 and I wonder if that's their legacy. Every time I see Chicago's flag, I think of The Blues Brothers where the city's police cars were that colour

In the Nashville city flag, the yellow stripe on the far right is pulled from the Tennessee state flag. The state flag is where the 3 stars in guitar pick logo comes from.

For the Islanders, you probably would've been better off using the Nassau County flag, because regardless of being in Belmont or Uniondale, fans will always associate the team as being from Nassau County. Using the New York State flag is way too generic.

Unfortunately Pittsburgh can't get rid of the blue and white pattern as it's part of William Pitt's coat of arms.

I've looked up for Phoenix city flag and I think it's beautiful, imho. I think you would rank it high as well, it's simple and it has maroon colour as a background.

I didn't even know that Canada had City Flags, I thought it was just the States. I guess it is a bigger thing there cause I've never seen the Winnipeg City flag till today and I'm from Winnipeg.

The "T" in ther Toronto flag represents city hall, hence the off-center

For NYC the colours are blue, white and orange because of the Dutch founders. Think of Netherlands at the olympics with orange gear.

Neil the reason the Las Vegas flag is blue is they literally took their coat of arms from the city of Las Vegas and put it over the state code of arms that’s on the Nevada flag

I am not sure why Nashville chose its colors. You might want to check out a book called Fabric of the Game, which might answer that. I think he would enjoy the history of how to use their names and looks.

@@metallife365 It's an oak tree surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves (playing to the "City of Oaks" nickname), and the reverse is the personal coat of arms for Walter Raleigh (the city's namesake) with his motto and a deer (which references the etymology of the word "Raleigh" itself, being derived from the Old English "ra leah", or "meadow of the roe deer").

Toronto's flag is off-center to emulate the city hall building.

With every ranking I make I start with one and move down.

Pretty sure you’re annoyed of me talking about my city of Anaheim! Haha jk but it’s rather interesting that not even our city hall has that flag risen. It is rather uninspiring and boring since there was some negative feedback about it. Neil I wish that I still have Twitter to show you a concept you might dig of a potential city of Anaheim flag, but I wouldn’t be able to get a hold of you from other sites (maybe email?) But yeah, I’m guessing Anaheim was trying to live up the hype with famous flags like Chicago and DC, but the reasoning behind that blue flag is pretty lame tbh.

Because they aren't really connected anymore. They essentially hate each other, and the Coyotes play off the Arizona state flag more with their graphical elements vs the Glendale flag.

How Chicago came in 13 spots away from first is boggling my mind lol. Thought for sure it’s the best flag in the US. Not Wales good, but it’s the best in the US. Arizona state flag is gorgeous!

Very true. Some nearby cities to some of these places have some really cool flags. I know Durham has a very cool flag, and it is way better than Raleigh’s flag.
