NFTs Are Fueling a Boom in Digital Art. Here’s How They Work | WSJ

Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, have exploded onto the digital art scene this past year. Proponents say they are a way to make digital assets scarce, and therefore more valuable. WSJ explains how they work, and why skeptics question whether they’re built to last. Photo Illustration: Jacob Reynolds/WSJ

😂 I'm in my 20's still can't get my head around selling tweets for 2.5m or collection of memes for 69m. What train 🚆 did I miss in life 😂 im asking myself are we living in the Artist era Picasso, DaVinci or modern individual Dorsey, Elon. Im not surprised or shocked of those piles of dollars dumped for tweets but im surprised and maybe shocked a bit of modern psychology and humanity believes. One day maybe I will see the values in it hopefully it won't be too late but for now 🤯🤯

This is not entirely true, but the legal implications around this will be interesting. For example, let’s take your quote. I can create an NFT around it and I would benefit from it. You’d get nothing, but in the case of copyright that is illegal. How can you then rid the blockchain (publicly available information but ‘unhackable’) when copyrighted content is created into a NFT? Now this court case, this will change copyright law and internet relationships. Another Wild West for us to explore

The concept of NFTs is pretty hard to grasp. It’s ability to keep track of ownership is where it has value (I think). I don’t believe the NFT itself will ever be something someone displays in their house or something like you would with art. Some might seek to simply make own “the original” but I don’t think it’s where NFTs real use lies. I would see NFTs applied to something like trading real-life items for an NFT, which can then be traded, sold, etc. It would basically be a certificate of ownership for the real item that would eliminate the possibility of theft. Whoever creates NFTs would just store the items securely and the NFTs would be able to be traded around without worry of scams since their authenticity can always be traced back. This could also be applied to things like card games. If rare cards were stored safely, their NFT replacement would keep track of ownership and would allow them to be used without the risk of damaging the card. TLDR: NFT good for representing real life items because they are safe to trade

I mean, I think I get it. The creator of Nyan Cat can make an NFT and sell it, and the buyer can say "I own *THE* Nyan Cat gif, here's its certificate of authenticity to prove it." But doesn't it really just boil down to bragging rights? I know that a souvenir poster of the Mona Lisa is absolutely not comparable to the real thing, but that's a *physical* copy we're talking about that is obviously different from the original. Gifs can easily be duplicated on a bit-by-bit level with just a few clicks, but the only difference is that your name and the price you paid is listed somewhere in the blockchain? I don't know, I guess it makes sense in a weird way, but I've always found it a bit creepy that people are willing to pay potentially thousands for Counter Strike virtual knife cosmetic skins *just* because Valve only created a certain amount. I guess this is just the next logical step.

you can potentially charge people to use the art you own, for example if someone wants to build a VR room with the art you own as poster they might get charged eg. 1$ to use that piece of art, or you can charge people that buy the Nyan cat gif on twitch 1cent for every use (this gif gets spammed thousands of times a day across thousands of livestreams)... Obviously for this to work you need the platforms (like twitch or VR Chat in the example) to implement this function, maybe one day the tokens will have legal value so companies will be required by law to pay fees to the token owner to use the art that token stands for

This allows social media sites to sell any meme or piece of art posted onto their site while the original content creator may know nothing about it until its too late and get nothing for it. The way it works right now is that they can copyright and sell your material without u knowing or getting anything out of it and by the time u find out, it already belongs to someone else.

Exactly. People here nitpicking the details that really don't matter to the majority of folks investing in NFTs or those who are creating NFTs. Creators are now being handsomely rewarded for their art and those invested in the niche art world are able to reap the financial benefits by being early adaptors of the NFT sector. Want to talk about 10xing or 100xing your investment without much effort (for the immediate short term until the masses catch up (which they already are as we speak by the second)) go research NFTs.
