Love the simplicity of the “old days.” Three people, no bombast, no 8 Hall of Famers and 2 wannabe Hall of Famers, no matching suits and shoes, no analytic statistics and fantasy projections, no Spielberg special effects graphics diluting the highlights... etc. Just simple, professional presentation.

The NFL in the late 70's early 80's is an obsession of mine !! Mainly cause it brings me right back to my youth watching the NFL. Special memories that borderline make me sad cause im so nostalgic for it.

@brynanburnap, Great days for sure. I grew up in the Washington DC suburbs and my entire family were big Redskins fans. I can remember as a 9 year old the Redskins beating Miami to win the Super Bowl in 1982, then attending the Super Bowl parade in an all day downpour of rain where it seemed like every person in the area attended. The following year I remember crying in my grandfathers basement when the Redskins got destroyed by the Raiders in the Super Bowl. I always look back on those days with mixed emotions..grateful to have those experiences and memories but also sad that those days are gone as are some of the people I experienced it with. I know life is always changing and I'm happy with my life now but I sure do miss the 80's. What great days. Three Super Bowl appearances, 2 wins..the hogs, the fun bunch..I want to go back to my childhood home and watch another game with my family.

NFL Today was the gold standard of the pregame show.

My interest has faded hard since the early 90s. Almost to a point where I'm lucky to see one complete game per year. They will say "ahh you old guys don't matter". ..I'm only 52 and plan on being around at least another 40 years or so. Yes, there are more of me out here that feel the same way. Go ahead and alienate about half the customer base.

I was 7 years old when he retired. My grandfather loved Roger and i remember him telling me that the cowboys were never gonna win with Danny White at the helm. ( i did like danny white ) But as a kid i remember thinking that staubach was like this mistical magical figure. What a class act as well as kind of a bad ass !! Like he was a tough dude. Wish i could have watched him play. I know Bradshaw won 4 Super Bowls with 2 being vs Roger. But to me Roger was the QB of the decade of the 70's.

The retirement press conference was pretty weird with Landry in the background while Roger talks about " the system " and " the man with the hat " Too bad it had to end like that :(

1977 the last season of 14 game schedule The last year 8 teams made the playoffs 2 AFC games Christmas Eve Saturday 2 NFC games Christmas Monday The day after Christmas and only 4 teams left, Times have changed!

One of the Top 10 all~time TE! He should be in the HOF! As Cliff Branch! Branch has 3 Rings! He also was CLUTCH!! I hated Oakland..still..but I respected his greatness and he belongs! Mel Blount used to try to kill him in those wars they had vs Pittsburgh! HOF!

I can remember that Monday game vividly. I thought the Rams were going to be out for revenge but the weather got in the way. It was a classic Vikings game that really instilled in me to work hard and be determined. The Vikes went in there as a underdog without Fran Tarkenton who was having a great day against the Bengals until he broke his leg. The Rams got there long awaited revenge on December 31 1978 in Frans last game. Vikings took a 7-0 lead but after that it was all Rams. 😢😞

That classic sound over music is so awesome to especially when it picks up @ 1:18. That was a staple of my childhood. Surprised it's not really used today. Also, I absolutely fell in love with the late 70's Broncos.

One of the greatest games in history. You also gotta love the dirt field at old Memorial Stadium. So old school.🙂

The Super Bowl should have been Oakland vs Dallas this season !! Denver with Tom Jackson had a classic year ....but The Super Bowl would have been SUPER if it was Cowboys vs Raiders ( the defending champs ) I hated both teams as I am a Minnesota Viking fan since I was 6 years old in 1969 and got my heart broke every year in the 70's !! ....I respect " greatness " and those great teams in the 70's played hard !! I am now 54 and saw that great era in person growing up in the east bay town of Pittsburg, Ca. * Great times !!

Agreed the Raiders got screwed over by the refs in the AFC Championship game. As a result the Super Bowl between the Cowboys and Broncos was a total dud because Dallas dominated from the beginning.

I agree the NFL Today was way better back in the seventies and eighties. Now there is 9 people in the studio, and what is with all the lame bumper music coming in and out of the commercials !! How pathetic. The main problem I see with the coverage of the NFL Today is they tried too hard to get the casual fan and basically flipped off the loyal NFL longtime fans.

Yeppers. Something tells me he is the only all-decade team member from the 30s-80s not in the HOF. Fortunately, he has been announced as a finalist for the class of 2021. The other tragedy was not getting Kenny Stabler in during his lifetime. For many years, I always said the 3 biggest crimes of the HOF was Drew Pearson (I am a Cowboys fan), Kenny Stabler, and Jim Plunkett. Get Plunkett in!!!!

The 70’s is when I started watching the NFL. If the weather was nice & the antenna was pointed in the right direction that is. Lol. Miss those days

@@bryanburnap4537 the Steelers beat the Cowboys pretty good late that regular season. '77 wasn't the Steelers best year, but I've always felt Dallas was fortunate that somehow Denver had the Steelers number that year. If not, Pittsburgh would have beaten the Cowboys in the Super Bowl. Again.

I enjoyed broadcasts from this Era. No yelling and screaming or injecting your own ego from the studio or booth.

It has been so many years since the 1978 NFL Playoffs, but if I recall correctly, if Pittsburgh had defeated Denver in Denver, then Pittsburgh would have played against Oakland in the AFC Championship Game in Oakland for the second year in a row. That would have been a tremendously interesting playoff rematch .

At that time, wild card teams could not host a playoff game, so if Pittsburgh would have beat Denver the AFC championship would have been in Pittsburgh; a divisional winner. Had that happened it would have been four years

When I said "two in a row", I was referring not to the number of consecutive postseason Raiders vs. Steelers games (1974-1976) but to what I thought would have been two consecutive AFC Championship games in Oakland if Pittsburgh had defeated Denver in the divisional game. However, you are correct that since Oakland was the wildcard team that year in the AFC , if Pittsburgh had defeated Denver , then Oakland would have had to travel to Pittsburgh to play the AFC Championship game which indicates a flaw in the postseason rules in that even if a wildcard team has a better record than a division winning team from another division in the conference, the wildcard team has to play in the division winner's stadium. I'd have to check Pittsburgh's record in 1977 regular season, but if I recall correctly, I think they finished the season 12-2 which was better than Oakland's 11-3 record that season. The rule should also be that if a wildcard team finished the season with the same won-lost record as a division winner from another division within the conference , then a tiebreaking procedure should make the site of the championship game the home field of the team that won the head-to-head matchup between the two teams in the regular season if they played against each other that season.

This was the final year of the 14 game regular season. They went to a 16 game regular season in 1978. They also allowed offensive lineman to extend their arms while blocking, which lead to an increase of holding penalties.

Loved old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Was always full of dirt.

We could not get the NBC pregame show, unless it was simulcast on Canadian TV. Growing up near the border, we did not get cable till the late 80s. The NFL Today was a simple show, and I enjoyed how it was run. They didn't over talk, argue with one another, and just presented the games, the highlights and the stories. I watched this day, and the Vikings-Rams matchup in the mud was a classic. I don't worry about the good times being gone, times have changed. It is nice, however, to see these again.

Like most of the commentary here, I think football was a better game then. Despite the injuries and the hardships the players endured, it made for some great games and memories. It was a great pass by Stabler and a great catch by Casper, but as Colts strong safety Bruce Laird pointed out later the Colts were really killed on the play by the fact that Lyle Blackwood (who I believe led the league in INT’s that year) was injured and they had to bring in a very inexperienced back-up FS, Tim Baylor, who as Laird put it, “Got completely turned around on the play.”

Met Ron Lee when I was a little kid in Fayetteville NC. I believe he lived there for awhile. The ghost to the post game was of the first games I really watched. Became a big football fan after that. So long ago...

Fields like the one in the OAK-BAL playoff game shown here are why many stadiums went to AstroTurf during the 1970's. Grass fields were poorly maintained and even when the 49ers went back to grass in 1979 fields still were not well maintained as a rule. That really changed when Prescription Athletic Turf came in during the late 1980's.

Old Colts fan, here. I listened to this game on WCBM, with the legendary Chuck Thompson announcing. I was 11 years old, and it broke my heart for the Colts to lose. The Baltimore Colts were NEVER good again after '77. Drunken-Bob ruined them...

This was actually played on a Monday. This was like the only time since the merger that each conference would play both their DIVISIONAL playoff on the same day. With Christmas falling on a Sunday for this particular year, it was figured that it would be more convenient for each of the conference's networks not to straddle Christmas with another playoff game they have to televise the next day. This might happen again soon however with NBC getting in the mix of televising divisional games (again). This past season during the wild card round, The AFC played on Saturday (KC at Hou then Pit at Cin) and the NFC played on Sunday (Sea at Min then GB at Was).

There is soooooo much history associated with this season it's crazy. As a ten-year-old, I can still visualize watching the Super Bowl (XII) at the bowling alley with my dad and brother. 1977 was the last year the NFL had a 14 game season. Super Bowl XII (Cowboys and Broncos) was the first Super Bowl to be broadcast in prime time, and it was also the first to be played in a domed stadium (LA Superdome). Additionally, Craig Morten became the first QB to start in a Super Bowl for two different teams (Cowboys: SB V and Broncos: SB XII). Lastly, Super Bowl XII is still the only SB to have co-MVPs: Randy White and Harvey Martin, Dallas Cowboys. Oh, and this is just for shitz and giggles. Craig Morten was the Cowboy's starting QB for SB V, the "Blunder Bowl", and it is the only SB in which the MVP was from the losing team (Chuck Howley, Cowboys).

I loved watching old games from Memorial Stadium. Something about a stadium where you can see houses and neighborhoods in the background. So old school and i can just imagine as an old Colts fan that the experience at Memorial Stadium was second to none. Its too bad that that boozebag Irsay had to ruin everything for a great city and great fan base.

Look for the highlights of the first AFC title game between the Raiders and Colts at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore back in 1970. The game was named "The Duel in the Dust" from the clouds of dirt being kicked up during play.

Tom Bradley, Classic Boomer and TJ. Their highlight show was the best ever.

I always liked the AFC better. the stadiums and fields were rugged lol. I wanted another Pittsburgh /Oakland battle. Instead Denver spoiled that. I was impressed with their defense. Stabler and Bradshaw would've done better against Dallas in my opinion. Poor Baltimore....stuck in the tough AFC.

Casper has double jointed elbows. Can't straighten his arms but can catch everything.

The show even had a diverse crew. It was absolutely perfect! I’d love for the NFL to go back to a format based off of what drew us in to begin with. XOs, human interest and GAMBLING! 😂 And of course Brent Musberger’s voice.

This season would have been a CLASSIC if it was the defending champion Oakland Raiders vs Dallas Cowboys! ( I hated both teams!)....I was a BIG Viking fan from 1969-2009...said fuck the NFL after all that heartbreak! However I believe a Raiders vs Cowboys Super Bowl that year with all those now HOF players, would have been great! Denver was never in it in that 27-10 loss! Oakland got fucked on that " Rob Lytle FUMBLE" ( they gave him a TD)...I think Oakland matched up great vs Dallas in the 70's! They rarely played each other in those days, even regular season. I love youtube for going back in time! I am now 53, I remember all those days! The music too!

Raiders vs Cowboys would have been interesting. Raiders were still good, but I think the Cowboys would have beaten them anyway. Cowboys were young, Raiders were aging. Don't forget Denver still beat the Raiders twice in '77 (yes I know Lytle fumble call, but didn't the Raiders benefit from the controversial personal foul in '76 against the Patriots in playoffs?), and also beat most of the top teams (Steelers twice, Colts, Cardinals (coming off 10-4, 11-3, and 10-4 seasons and started 7-3), Bengals). The '77 Broncos were still a special team as it was the first Denver team to go to any playoff game and a Super Bowl. Similar to '77 Portland Trailblazers that year, who also went to their first championship, but they won it. You were a Vikings fan in those days? Fun every season until they broke your heart over and over. I'm from Chicago and we never had much to root for until '84 when they won the division and the great defense finally blossomed. Then of course, the 1985 team of legend. We still feed off of that team to this day. Seems like yesterday.

Well said! Yep' same era we were in, it was like a dream now....Just some classic teams and players! Almost "no rules"..Those guys, esp. the QB's ( Terry Bradshaw is one tough s.o.b.!!..He took a beating getting those 4 Rings!) The Vikes broke my heart like Frado in " The Godfather" for 40 f'n years! !! I had all the garb too! Purple Jacket's....and all, I gave it all to my 35 yr. old former "step-son who has loved them since 87' when he was 6 that day and I was married to his Mother, when they STUNNED the NFL dogging the Joe Montana 49'ers in SF! ( My best win as a fan!!..Anthony Carter!!) The 85' Bears with " Sweetness" God bless his soul....GREAT memories and don't forget that 80''s" Blow!" ( it tasted like..bubble gum!)...Crazy kids doing drugs! ( Pittsburg Ca. east bay was jumping in that great era!! We had a blast! God bless'

Ram4 - I agree. I've always looked back on SB 12 regretting that the Raiders weren't in there rather than Denver. I don't think Dallas would have pushed the Raiders around like they did the Broncos.

This is a pregame show. Fox, ESPN, nfl network and the rest could learn something from watching this. Stop putting people on television who have zero command of the English language.

That was the year of the introduction of the orange crush defense. I still think to this day that the Broncos won because the refs made a bad call one what appeared to be a fumble recovered by the Raiders that would have kept the Broncos from scoring. The Raiders vs. Cowboys would have been a better Super Bowl.

Bert Jones broke vertebrae in his neck which led to a sore arm. Yes, he was that good for a few years. The Brett Saberhagen of the NFL>
