If you have to explain why a ubiquitous TV ad pitchman might have needed an interpreter during his playing days, then your joke is a complete fail.

Why dont they just put flags on them already and skip the inevitable conclusion of this whole mindset. Its a gladiator sport, theyre making millions of dollars, they know the risks, its not a tragedy when they get injured

The only way this "hip drop" rule should pass is if they allow for automatic review of any penalty of 15+ yards. It's already too subjective, plus this ignores the fact that a 190 lb CB isn't tackling a 250 lb TE without a tackle that looks exactly like a hip drop. They're gonna get dragged, so what's the expectation? Let go and let him score? Lol

As an ex-rugby player, the banning of the hip drop tackle made much more sense to me in rugby than in the NFL. Because in rugby you cannot play while in front of the ball, and passes are only lateral or behind, you usually only get tackled from the front, or a drag tackle as someone is breaking through a gap. So hip drops are unnecessary. In the NFL, where a pass rusher can come at the qb from any angle, they're a legit approach.

The hip drop tackle ban is just a flat disadvantage for defensive players, what’re they supposed to do? I mean if you’re a 190-200lb corner trying to tackle a 250-265lb TE, you’re gonna have to drop your weight down, what do they expect them to do let the guy go?

Dude, I understand player safety is a must, BUT football is a contact sport. And every player understands the risk they're taking while playing this game. So like, what do defenders do at this point? Because it seems like they're taking the whole "contact" aspect out and are doing the most to minimize injuries. Yet at the same time, they are penalizing defenders just for tackling at this point. Like it seems to be getting harder and harder to play on the defensive side of the ball at this point

It's overly complicated for the casual viewer to have a kicking zone and multiple touchback scenarios. At this point the NFL is going to change kickoffs every year with another bad idea until they do finally get rid of them entirely.

The worst thing about the proposed in-game rule changes is the failure to outlaw rugby mauls. It's always been illegal to advance a ball carrier by pushing them from behind - anyone who knows the history of the game knows that... It's an ugly, boring, 1 yard and a cloud of dust play.

[Rugby's different. With multiple phases of play, no whistle after the tackle and laterals being worth the turnover risk, mauls drawing in more defenders set up plays in space.]

That used to be called ENCROACHMENT. On the offense by pushing another player in the back to advance the ball. I remember it being called on the Bears like 25-30 years ago. Then I remember Reggie Bush pushed Matt Leinart forward for a TD in like 2005 or so. I remember screaming: “that’s illegal! That’s encroachment!” While simultaneously they are screaming: “what an amazing ‘heads up’ play by Reggie Bush!”

I keep saying it, if Tomlin doesn't see this as his last in Pittsburgh before moving on to something different, I have a sneaking suspicion that all this could be a ruse to get the scent off them pre-draft, enabling them to suprise everyone and move up to get the QB of the future they want, and Russ/Fields are bridge/insurance at a cool price of just under $5m.
