NFL Films: Wizard - The Jimmy Johnson Story (1994)

Спорт

Jimmy Johnson was the first to win both a National Championship at the highest level of college football and a Super Bowl as a Head Coach. This 1994 documentary by NFL Films chronicles the Jimmy Johnson era at the Dallas Cowboys from his early days there in 1989 up until winning back-to-back Super Bowls in 1993 and 1994. He would later go on to return to Miami - not to coach The U, but the Miami Dolphins. Although he posted three winning seasons in four years with the Dolphins he couldn't replicate his earlier success with the Cowboys which is certainly what he's best remembered for as a coach. Coach Johnson retired after the 1999 season, taking his talents to broadcasting.

I agree. Jimmy saved his franchise. They were going nowhere very fast. The Cowboys could have ended up the way the Redskins are now. The Redskins were a great team and now they are mostly at the bottom of their division every year, with the exception of 2020 where they finally made the playoffs. Once Joe Gibbs left, they were lost.

@@jaycompany4886 They were really firing on all cylinders and Jimmy's coaching gave them the winners edge. The Cowboys were the team of the 90's, but if they kept Jimmy they would been a complete dynasty. They probably would have gone 5-0 in the Super bowls. They might have lost one as they got older - probably at the end of the 90's. It would have set a different tone to the NFL in the 90's. When they were winning under Johnson, the NFL was such a blast. When he left the Cowboys, the NFL was still in it's heyday, but it would have been even that much more fun with Johnson and the Cowboys. They brought a lot of color and flavor to the NFL.

The biggest shame of it all is that the Cowboys knew that would have won 3 or 4 straight if Jimmy was there. Jimmy kept the discipline and work ethic in that team. You saw it erode away over the next 3 seasons with arrests of Michael Irvin and drug test failures from Leon Lett and driving recklessly like Erik Williams did that lost him out during the 94 season. I know one thing is for sure, the Cowboys under Jimmy would not have gone down 21-0 against the 49ers in the 94 NFC Championship. We don't know if they would have beaten the 49ers, but I know one thing is for certain, Jimmy would have had his team ready with a bit of cockiness and not arrogance coming out a Barry led team. The Cowboys thought their loss to the 49ers in the regular season was a fluke. They Cowboys weren't there ready mentally and physically. The 49ers were and took advantage and got Steve Young his Super Bowl as a starter. Still in the end, Jerry finally publicly admitted in 2021 that he f'd up by letting Jimmy go. Both of them couldn't share the credit with Jerry and him making loads of money on the business end for the Cowboys. Jerry's ego got in the way and only 3 playoff wins since 1996.

Him and Bill Walsh both were masters of the draft. Especially stockpiling picks in later rounds. Coaches that went back to back Lombardi RIP Shula RIP Noll RIP Walsh RIP Johnson Shanahan Belichick 5 of them are in the Hall of Fame. The 6th should be in (Mike Shanahan). The 7th has won a total of 8 Superbowls (6 as head coach and 2 as an assistant) Belichick. Jimmy Johnson rightfully earned his place in Canton.

I remember how many people actually said that they were embarrassed about Jimmy Johnson becoming the DC HC. It was the same people who trashed Danny White after Staubach retired. The arrogance of this types of people no wonder Dallas lost throughout the 80s. We have this types now who claim to be Dallas fans yet talk so negative about the team. If you like a team, you root for them, win or lose. You suffer the losses and enjoy the wins. But you don't trash your own team. If people think they can coach better then take your expertise to your local high school or Rec Center and volunteer to be a coach. You'll find out that it's not as easy as you think.

When exactly did Jimmy lose on purpose? I don't think you know what you're talking about. Jimmy likes winning too much to lose on purpose. Besides the picks Dallas got from the Walker trade were based on Minnesota's record Also, contingent on whether the Minnesota plyers traded to Dallas actually made the team because if any were cut then Dallas would get more picks. Dallas went 1-15, 7-9, 11-5, 13-3, 12-4 under Johnson. They had no competition for last place the year they went 1-15 they didn't have to tank. Their only first round pick after going 1-15 was courtesy of the Walker trade and Dallas selected Emmitt. The #1 pick you allege the Cowboys lost on purpose for was already lost when the Cowboys selected Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft the year prior. Maybe you should shut up.
