They filmed this in Springfield, TN. The gas station is called Country Cupboard, but us old heads call it Jamoli's. We used to buy cigs and drank back in the HS days there

Everybody keeps saying she should have stayed still, but her car was parked outside. She was the only one in there besides the cashier. The robbers would have noticed a single car in front of the store and figured there was someone else in there.

Yeah but the robber wasn't looking to shoot anyone if he didn't have to - he just wanted to get the cash and cigarettes and get the hell out and the guy behind the counter was doing as he was told so another few seconds and it all would've been over and everyone would've gone about their lives. It only had a chance to escalate because she messed about. People do silly things when they're scared though I guess.
