I just got my 622GW yesterday. I ran it through some tests tonight (after dark) with and without image stabilization. All the streetlights and headlights are big snowballs of light, street signs are not legible. I pulled into a lit up gas station, sitting still. When I reviewed the footage, I could not make out the license plate on a stationary vehicle just 25 foot in front of me. Looking at the footage in your video, it would seem mine is defective. I did these tests without image stabilization for 2160p @ 30FPS, 1440p @ 60FPS, and 1440P at 30FPS; I repeated the tests with image stabilization with 1440P @ 30FPS as it would not let me run it in 4K @ 30FPS with the feature tuned on (messaging about having to change the resolution first). All test were subpar at night with respect to any kind of clarity for any text smaller than what is on a Stop Sign.

Thank you for such a good comparison of the two dash cams. I am looking to replace the WheelWitness dash cam that I have. This is the second WheelWitness that has failed in less then 2 years. I am looking for a good quality dash and was trying to decide between the 522GW and the 622GW. After watching your video I will be going with the 622GW. Thanks again for the work you put into your video.

Nice! Make sure you have the correct memory card. 128 is the max if I remember correctly. I haven’t had any issues with the NextBase branded ones

Hello Don, thanks for a nice review of the 622gw, I got one now and i tried the VanTrue 256 GB Sd card that i still had here , and the Nextbase 622gw runs perfectly with it after formatting it in the device ( wich uses exfat file system) so no problems there . The only thing i hate is the color of the outside of the 622gw, it should be mat black overall, this is to visible from outside. regards John Belgium

I use a 256 GB Lexar micro SD card in my 622GW and it recognizes it as a 256 Gb and it works fine. YMMV. It is a High Performance 633x U3.

all this is great but what i need is footage of the rear camera in action - Rear Window Camera - Black Model:NBDVRS2RWC

Does it seem stabilization doesn't matter so much with normal driving in non snow or off road conditions? I just bought the 622 yesterday and even 4k video doesn't read so well unless you snapshot a picture. Stabilization on 120 at 1080p is disabled. Thanks for comparison.

Nice review. I got 622 nextbase and recently I noticed whenever I stopped at the lights or at the giveway the video shakes but when I drive the video is stable. Can you please see of you can tell what the problem is.

I don't experience this. Does your vehicle vibrate (noticeably) while idling?

I've been using a SanDisk Extreme Durance 128GB micro SD in mine and it works absolutely no problem

@@Donslife saves paying the premium for an SD which won't even last as long. It's just marketing nonsense to make money. Any SD card with similar speeds will work just fine

Hi thanks for posting this videos it’s very helpful. I want to ask have you experienced any issues with the 622 in terms of the camera freezing or the message that pops up saying to format the SD card as my 422 next base cam had many issues. Now I’m looking to get the 622.

I have had the same minor errors on the 422 you describe. Not really freezing but the format the SD card. My 622 has been solid. Froze once on a record hot day. Just reset it and formatted the card and didn’t happen again. When I know there isn’t any footage I need after a month or so, I proactively format the card just because. The battery lasts longer on the 622 too for parking mode. I use mine in 2k mode with a 1080p rear camera currently

its good BUT if you are using the rear camera as well and have Image Stabilization or extreme weather on it will drop the resolution down and will not do 4k

I haven’t used the Kenwood product, but based on reviews alone, it appears more people are happy with the Nextbase 622GW. I am working on another video this weekend too for a rear camera attachment.

With image stabilization at 4k, my understanding is it crops the picture to 2.7k using the extra to achieve stabilization. Fair enough as this method is used in other devices. But this brings questions: 1: is the clarity the same as 4k without stabilization, for example are plates as readable (some might say more readable when stabilized with the same clarity) 2: is the file size stored on the sd card smaller as the number of pixels is reduced to 2.7k. If stabilization results in a stable feed with the same clarity while reducing storage use, at the cost of cropping the edges. Overall I think this is a good thing.

Hey David, I have had several dash cams to test. You are absolutely right. Digital Image Stabilization usually crops the image border to create a buffer of information to draw from and keep the image centred. Until they come out with optical image stabilization for dash cams, this is what most manufacturers of dash cans will do. Personally even at 2k, the license plates are legible in most situations. Around here dirty or concealed license plates is more of the issue ❄️. I don’t recall the file size differences off hand, but a 32-64Gb card has been plenty for a daily driver. Just grab footage you need within 3-5 days of an incident to avoid overwriting. However the footage would be typically auto-locked if an impact triggered it to record.

Hi. When vehicles are in motion, both self and other, which is more likely to capture number plates? 4K @ 30, or 2K at 60? It's one of the last questions that my buying decision seems to be coming down to.

Just purchased the 622GW and wanted to view the recordings on computer. My question is each video file has 2. Whats the diffeence between the FH file and the FL file? They look the same to me

It’s adequate but your sensitivity settings play a role. By now there are likely systems that do it even better

Comparison of 2k 60fps with 4K 30 FPS?

Hi! When i am running both front and rear camera it switches to 1440 30fps, I have a Sandisk extreme pro 4k card! When i remove the rear camera it stays on 4k. Do you have any idea why it swtiches to 1440 when i use both front and rear camera?

I double checked the claim on their website: The 622GW will continue to record in 4K when connected to a Nextbase Rear Camera Module, with your Rear Module recording in full HD quality of 1080p at 30fps. This safeguards your vehicle from multiple angles and gives you greater peace of mind. When recording in 4K, it is recommended you use a Nextbase U3 microD card. Maybe there is a firmware update. Otherwise I would suggest reaching out to their support team. I don’t have the rear camera as of right now to check it’s quality.

@@IceSkatingCrewSweden Hi, you can have your front cam in 4k whilst the rear cam is connected. In order to get this to work though you will have to turn off Image Stabilisation.

Does the 622 GW Cam have parking mode motion sensor front dash and rear if someone walks up to your car at night ?

You can watch as much footage as your memory card will hold. Each file is set at 1, 2 or 3 minutes in length. I would recommend pulling the card out and using a computer if you want to access files way quicker

Compared to other dash cams the image quality isn't there on the 622, is this an actual 4k dash cam or interpolated( must have an 8 MP sensor for 4k)?? Non buffered parking and a lithium ion battery are definitely negatives as well. For a $499.00 dash cam I would expect a true high quality 4k 30-60fps image, rear dual cam 1440p(2k), buffered parking feature, and a super capacitor in place of the lithium ion battery. This fits in the category of a $125-$175 dash cam at most IMHO.

It was uploaded 4k with a high bitrate, but depending on the device youtube is playing it on, it might be downscaling. On my 27” monitor it looks like decent 4k from direct from the memory card.

is the night vision better or worse than a sony starvis 2 sensor?

The Starvis 2 is a new sensor so I suspect if the new cameras optimize for the Starvis 2 capabilities, it will be superior in all tests.

@1:34 The maximum size Micro SD is actually 256Gb...it also HAS TO BE Class U3, as U1's will not work in them.

Everything, continuous recording but will eventually overwrite the oldest files.

@@angelberrios7843 each file will be 1-3 mins depending on your settings. When you watch the file names in order (they are timestamped), you’ll have continuous footage. Example: if you go on a short drive for 10 mins. You’ll have 4 files if your increments are set to 3 mins. You’ll have 3 files that are 3 mins each and 1 file that is 1 minute long.

If you mount it to the car. When the car it is mounted to bounces then so will the camera. The technology in the 622gw counters the bounce meaning its clever to keep the image still i dnt know how but yeh nothing to do with the mount. If you have 622gw and it bounces alot with the car then thats mounting failure.

In 4k mode my camera freezes all the time.

Hmm. I would make sure your firmware is updated, maybe a hard reset? Otherwise you may have a defective unit. Mine hasn’t had any issues. My 422 back in the say would require the card be formatted every month or so, but no problems with my 522 or 622

64Gb U3 Nextbase brand. 128 is the max size according to their website

There is no 4k with EIS. This is 2K + EIS with extrapolation to 4K. Which means if you want to use EIS there is no point to set 4K.

REMEMBER YOU WILL NOT TRULY SEE THE DIFFERENCE IF THE DEVICE YOUR WATCHING KZread ON CAN'T EVEN CONTEMPLATE 4K LOL.....

@@Donslife The slow motion part that plays in 1080p. Does that mean it only works if you was on 1080p setting and not if you was on 4k setting. or it changes the 4k recorded footage into 1080p while watching in slo mo. Thanks!

Slow motion (120fps) is 1080p resolution only. 4k slow motion is not an option

@@Donslife cool thanks. Why would u need slo mo if the 4k is sharper in resolution to see what needs to be seen just by pausing? Otherwise what's the point in 4k if you have to always be recording in 1080p 120fps incase u ever need to slo mo the footage?...what do you think.

I agree that 4K should give you the extra detail to make up for any missed frames compared to 1080p 120. I have think 1080p 120 might be useful for people that want the footage for more than capturing an accident or break in. I personally keep mine on 4k so I can get the extra detail. Now if I was racing my car at a track, 1080p 120 for some social media footage would be good. That way I could capture some slow motion footage and make it more dramatic. 😂
