Newton's third law - Best Demonstration EVER !! - by Prof. Walter Lewin

This is an excerpt from Prof walter Lewin's fairwell lecture on the 16th may 2011. He beautifully demonstrated Newton's third law of motion as well as the conservation of momentum at the end of this lecture -- • For the Love of Physic...

i have received alot of comments on this video saying that it does not demonstrate the third law but rather the second. Actually, when it comes to rockets, all 3 newton's laws apply. in this video, i was only interested in talking about the third law. Like all objects, rockets are governed by Newton's Laws of Motion. The First Law describes how an object acts when no force is acting upon it. So, rockets stay still until a force is applied to move them. Likewise, once they're in motion, they won't stop until a force is applied. Newton's Second Law tells us that the more mass an object has, the more force is needed to move it. A larger rocket will need stronger forces (eg. more fuel) to make it accelerate. The space shuttles required seven pounds of fuel for every pound of payload they carry. Newton's Third Law states that "every action has an equal and opposite reaction". In a rocket, burning fuel creates a push on the front of the rocket pushing it forward. This creates an equal and opposite push on the exhaust gas backwards.

I think the third law one is incorrect. The fuel do create an upthrust but the reaction force by the air also helps it move upward. As the mass keeps on decreasing with decreasng payload, the acceleration increases according to second law(a=F/m) due to which the escape velocity is much higher then the acceleration due to gravity. All this owing to the fact that the upthrust stays the same throughout for equal force output.

@@paulnotdownunder3172 I assume you are trolling but just in case you really think that. 1) Newtons Laws work perfectly well in a vacuum within their bounds of applicability (e.g. relativistic factors becoming significant at very high speeds) 2) Rockets continue to work according to Newton III 3) Gravity also clearly operates just as well across the near vacuum of space as well as close to the ground What you mean is, 4) jet engines don't work in a vacuum because they need incoming air to compress and to burn fuel in (a jet that carries its own fuel and oxidiser and discards the inlet, is basically a rocket) 5) propellers don't work in a vacuum because while an engine could still rotate the prop (if say solar or batter) there would be no air for the blade to push against. And, 6) no, rockets don't work by pushing against air (common misunderstanding though), they work by throwing a mass of combustion production out of the back at immense speed and the the forward momentum added per second is equal to the momentum of the rocket exhaust per second. The integration of this over the complete burn is literally called "the rocket equation" and you can calculate the final speed from initial conditions.

If physics in India was taught like this. Students would have fallen in love with Physics. But unfortunately teachers just cares about the numericals and all. Edit:- Those who are saying that I have commented just for likes and all. Let me make one thing clear that quality education is very rare to find in India. I know there are some good teachers too but there are just few in numbers. And getting education from them is not possible for many students. Thanks to Internet, I came to know about some amazing teachers who teaches very well. I am getting a quality education on free of cost. But if I didn't have internet I don't know what would have happened. As in many parts of India specially in the regions of U.P. and Bihar it's just so difficult to get a good teacher. And if you are having financial issues. It just impossible to get the quality education. People are saying that I am random person who is just spreading hate. So I just wanna say that if you guys didn't struggle to get a good school, teacher and education that doesn't mean the whole scenario is that good. Just because you are living in a developed part of the country you guys are saying that. If you guys have time just visit the backward or less developed part of the country. And then see the quality of education and availability of good teachers. And then comment. I am not here playing the victim card but ya it's the harsh reality. Just forget about the quality of education the place where I am living it's very difficult to find a teacher. I have access to internet and other resources so I am going good. But that's not the reality of the whole country. Many people still don't have access to internet or other resources to get a proper education. In my area many students just don't take Science after 10th because they have not that much money to afford Coaching. Just wanna say that if you are not going through something doesn't mean that it don't exists. Thank you🙏

Yeah. In the past I was a teacher for 3 years. The thing is the institutions in which you enroll don't care about taking care of teachers. Teaching is among the most underpaid and unstable job in India. There is no rewarding mechanism in institutions that will inspire teachers to excel even more, infact they are demotivated by the very same institution. If any entitled spoilt child complains against the teacher, the institution will warn/take action against them. So yes, there was a time when teacher held a position greater than the parents but now they are the disposable one. Not everyone wants to excel in a thankless job. So next time before blaming any teacher please think about what might be the reason behind their actions.

For a complete explanation of of Newton's action-reaction principle you need to incorporate all three of Newton's laws of motion. According to Newton's 1st law both the gas being expelled and the bicycle have inertia, which causes them to resist a change to their states of motion. Then according to the 3rd law both the gas and the bicycle are pushing each other in opposite directions against their relative inertial masses. Then according to the 2nd law the amount of force being produced is equal to the mass of the gas times the rate its being accelerated.
