[NEWS IN-DEPTH] The BTS phenomenon and future of K-Pop

BTS 현상과 K-Pop 영향력 확대
And for a more in-depth discussion we're joine by Professor Lee Gyu-tag of George Mason University Korea.
1. Let's start off with the boy band's latest performance. Their tour concert ended recently. What's your observation on the shows?
2. Their latest album 'Map of the soul: Persona' is now ranked number 31 on the Billboard 200. On the Billboard social 50, BTS is retaining its top spot for the 100th week. The boy band has also received two billboard music awards and I can go on all night on their achievements. Could you walk us through the major feats achieved by the BTS?
3. Their achievements are beyond successful, they are unprecedented for any Korean artist. What is the significance or implication of their record-breaking achivements so far?
4. BTS is not the first Korean artist to make it to any of the billboard ranking lists. But they surely stand out. Why? What's so different and special about them?
5. how do you personally assess their music?
6. One of the interesting traits of BTS songs is that they strike a chord with themes that everyone can relate to. For instance their series of 'Love Yourself'. They actually delivered a speech at the UN under the theme 'Love Yourself'. How do you see this?
7. I hear most of Korea's idol groups that refer to boy bands or girl groups have their own unique view of the world and so does BTS. Could you elaborate on this trend, and how the trend is being received by fans?
8. The boy band's fanbase called 'Army' is also gaining wide recognition with its massive size and support. What are some of their characteristics that distinguish them from other fan clubs?
9. It's interesting how BTS consistently sings mostly in Korean although they could have released an English version by now. In fact, it goes the other way, with fans actually learning to read and sing in Korean, and I think only one of them speaks English, and the band's leader Rap Monster has said he has no plans to work on an English album. Why? (due to this fact, actually, CNN said that BTS is more powerful than the Beatles, because BTS succeeded in "invading" America like the Beatles did in the 1960s without speaking English)
10. Their record label Big Hit Entertainment, and its chief executive clinched memberships to the U.S. Recording Academy, the decision making body that annually selects the Grammy Awards winners. How big is this? (no pun intended)
11. BTS is not the only Korean group that is gaining more and more global popularity. Could you name a few other noticeable artists for us?
12. K-Pop stars have raised the bar and the status of K-pop in the global music industry and their influence is growing. Do you expect this trend to continue?
13. What kind of efforts do you think are needed to carry on this legacy of Korean artists we are witnessing right now... and what are some other ways to foster the next BTS?
14. How do you see K-pop evolving and in which direction should the Korean music industry go?

As much as I appreciate this Professor's effort and enthusiasm in answering all the questions to best of his abilities, I think he missed out on quite important key points as to why BTS stands out from the rest of the K-pop. 1) They have been given creative freedom over their music which allows them more control over their musical aspects with members actively participating in the writing process, producing, arranging and even choreo and stage management. 2) They talk about their own personal experiences in their lyrics and release music relevent to people across all ages 3) Their team dynamic is very strong and beautiful to watch with members sharing amazing bond. 4) They communicate with their fans on a regular basis through various social media platforms and have been known to do a lot of things for their fans. 5) And I saw that this came up in the video quite frequently, about how the fans were able to relate their lyrics. We have a very active fandom (ARMY). There are translators who work very hard to bridge the language gap. Almost of all their contents including lyrics, news articles, interviews, variety shows are almost immediately translated into various languages making it accessible for international fans to understand them better. I might've missed out on a lot of things but I must say that just like the rare Earth phenomena, BTS is the result of right timing, right factors blending together to create a perfect mix. They truly are a once in a lifetime thing. There never was, never is and never will be another BTS. 💜

Hearing her say “KPOP legends BTS” is so fulfilling and heartwarming to think that they started from literal nothing, debuting in a company which was near bankruptcy and now six years later getting called legends, selling out stadiums, breaking world records, being a world phenomenon, getting awards, and more, to see how big they are now is overwhelming yet it makes me prideful because with all the hardship and success they have had they have stayed humble and grateful to those who have helped them walk through the path of hardships and success. I am and will always be an an ARMY, I am proud to be a part of a fandom which supports these seven wonderful men. #6yearswithBTS

Exactly, I won't deny other group presence and I won't doubt that probably there is another korean group that may get 1st on billboard 200 like BTS but with BTS long list of achievement and record and with 3 no 1 album on billboard 200 can they match BTS achievement? After all right now they never stop making and creating new record. So yeh, other group may get popular too but I doubt it gonna be successful as BTS.

Sometimes i forget how much impact they have in the world because they are, since debut, very down to earth and incredibly humble people (a bunch of crackheads too). The positivity Bts has on Army's lives is immeasurable, and something we lack these days due to different pressures in a fast developing world. The boys, through lyrics and their videos, unintentionally teaches us things you cant learn within a classroom: the art and importance being yourself, growing confidence, having a dream and believing in it. They stay true to themselves and do what they love doing: music. When people say they are overrated and i see it so often, they just think they are another artist who are breaking charts. BTS, these three letters, are so much more than that. They are the voices we needed for this generation, and a comfort to so many of us. Their sincerity is real and i saw it the moment i watched and listened to spring day. Their passion is so inspiring. Not to mention they stay connected to their fans despite the ever growing fanbase that would suggest losing touch, but they make every effort and you cant not see that. Needless to say, I value Bts for an infinite number of reasons, and its hard to put into words how much they mean to Army. Its something you have to feel to realise that.

When I struggle and listen to BTS' music, I am not comforted by the chords and their incredible stage presence, but by the directly translated lyrics that hold a mirror to my struggles and put my strong emotions into words.

Great interview with thoughtful questions. Just a couple of points. 1. BTS is not exclusively for the younger generation, their music speaks to all generations and has fans of all ages. I am 64yo and l grew up with some of the legends of music including Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Rolling Stones , ACDC etc... so it is not a surprise that older people like Pop / Rock / Rap music. 2. We understand what BTS sing about because Bighit and ARMY translate for us. We learn the Korean words in the songs and understand what they are saying along with the Korean references .The meaning of their songs are left open to interpretation by the listener so the meaning can touch us all in different ways at different times in our lives. 3. You don’t have to be young to feel lonely, sad, depressed or abused, you don’t have to be young to feel happy , excited or part of this family we call ARMY. 4. Age is a number, it tells you how long you have lived. Young is a state of mind, it tells you how much you enjoy your life.

I was just watching BTS attic for their Festa 2019 and this one thought was so prominent in my head; "If I ever have kids I would be so happy for them to have artists like BTS to look up to and follow." And I think that's one thing that makes BTS so great and so amazing. I love art and music so I follow many artists without limiting myself with genre, I have also so many artists that have inspired me while growing up, artists whose works have left an imprint on me but its only BTS that I have connected with on a human level. They are so raw and so honest that it's easy to forget how big they are. They are so down to earth and they all have their own unique personae and defining traits with their own intricacies and that makes it easier to find a common ground with them. Art is all about that connection and the minute you start relating to not only the art but the artist themselves and this connection evolves into this big network with people from all around the world, then you end up with something truly beautiful and that's what BTS and Army is all about for me. Watching them reminiscence about their childhood, talk fondly about their memories of their parents (I mean if this doesn't say great role models then what does?) , question their identities and the dilemma that comes with self-discovery, how they deal with their emotions and how they view self-development in just a 50 mins video was in a way so wonderful and it makes people think along with them and that for me is what BTS provides, they connect with us not just through their work but through their mere existence.

And that was awesome. They are always INTENS and FOCUS with their music and performance. Which is make Armys so proud with their hard work. They re not only Idol but REAL mucisians. And the last but not least THEY RE ALL HAVE GOOD PERSONALITY and have SENSE OF HUMOR too. They re totally POSITIVE FIGURE , which is world need to have. They are honest and sincere musicians. That's the reason why their songs are always liked even their listeners aren't kpopers. Their song comes from the heart and reaches the heart in the end.

Reasons why we have that meaningful connection with Bangtan thru their music. Translations are everywhere, thanks to ARMYs who put so much love in translating not only their songs but other videos as well, esp the ones from BangtanTV. Bangtan has been consistent in conveying their message, it's all reflected thru their songs, MVs, choreography, notes, albums, photos, webtoon, interviews, concerts, etc.. The most special among these >> THE LOVE, it's not one-way. It's reciprocated. From Day1, they believing that this is our journey together, BTSxARMY... ... thru good & bad times we are here for each other. I guess you will only get this deep when you're an ARMY yourself, coz your experience will tell you.

MOST Army probably have learned their lyrics in Korean and what they mean I am assuming like how I learned what their song's meant via subtitles and then being able to sing along in Korean. BTS is different than any other artist I have ever known because they love their fan's so much and they are always so appreciative of their fan's. BTS is also different because they have managed to have millions of fans all over the world and these fans who once were probably divided are able to come together because of their love for BTS. BTS also teaches everyone to love themselves, to speak who they are and to accept who they are. LOVE yourself, speak yourself , accept yourself and the difference in others. I've said it over and over again that Bangtan has rewritten what we've understood to be culture. They've transcended not only language barriers, but also age, nationality, racial, social strata, music genre, etc. Their long-term project has redefined the aforementioned barriers. To me, like the prof said, hip hop had been more about materialism. Look at the work of so-called rappers criticizing BTS at the beginning of their career. But, Bangtan redefined what hip hop songs could talk about.

This was a great dialogue but one key aspect that should be emphasized is that regarding the question about the "trend" of how kpop idol groups see their fans and their worldwide view, the professor's answer only applied to BTS. The following examples and the unique way BTS do things demonstrated that it is not a reflection of the rest of the idol groups, just like the impact of their themes and lyrics cannot be shared with other successful groups, because their actual, work(their lyrics, albums, relationship with each other and their relationship with ARMY) are distinctly unique to them. I am not certain if this segment carried on to discuss other groups, but by the description, I'm concluding they were mainly dissecting BTS. Given what I stated, it's a disservice to have other groups like Blackpink up on the screen given the very nature of this segment. What made BTS different is what still differentiates them from the typical kpop standards that traditional labels maintain: their lyrics and their musical performances are rooted in and representative of their underdog journey and the unique obstacles they faced that groups from established companies did not have to face.

Keeps saying "They don't understand the language. They can't understand what they're (BTS songs) saying." Dude!! There's this new thing called SUBTITLES!! WE KNOW WHAT THEY'RE SINGING! WE KNOW WHAT THE SONGS ARE ABOUT! BTS DOESN'T ONLY APPEAL TO THEIR GENERATION! THEY ARE INTERGENERATIONAL so your assessment that teens flock to them because it's(ARMY) a community that won't be infiltrated by the older generation is BS. I'm 48 & found them myself. I'm teaching my kids about them, not the other way around. BTS has a universal appeal. Their songs address fears, self-doubts, and losses we ALL face, with music that expresses emotion regardless of language. You're looking for the "secret formula" to their success so you can replicate it, but you're missing the point that they ARE different & THAT is part of the "formula". First start with special people.

my friend and I went to bts' Wembley Stadium concert day 2, we traveled down to London from North West of England on the Saturday and on the train, we met a lady from South Korea who interviewed us about why we like bts and the same thing happened later that day when we were at London Bridge with some other friends. One of the questions was about if we could speak Korean or not and when all of us said no, we were asked as to why we like bts if we can't understand the language. My response was you don't need to understand a language to feel the emotion behind a song and that it was easy enough for us to look up translations of the songs online.' When I found out the translations of their songs, the messages that they had put within those songs helped me to deal with anxiety and depression, prior to finding bts, I was harming myself in multiple different ways because I was hurting because I was hurting so badly and it was bts who stopped me from doing that. I will forever be grateful to bts for that, I found the 28th June 2018 (two weeks will be a year) and I stopped hurting myself by late August/early September. I am now 26 years old (25 at the time) and I had been self harming since I was 13 (so about 12 years) and I have not self harmed since then.

Their achievements are very very hard to beat! And all other groups can be as famous like them, but they can’t replicate those “FIRST” achievements that BTS have conquered. Again, anyone can do their thing, anyone can succeed and reach the top, but as the saying goes, NO ONE can beat the ORIGINAL. The professor is very knowledgeable, but when the question about why BTS is more special than all the other Kpop groups was asked he completely missed the two major components that has elevated BTS to this level of success. 1. Personal relationship with fans via social media, which builds fan loyalty 2. Lyrical content, because the BTS members are actual music creators, not just performers.

Honestly BTS has ascended passed the title of "idol". They are true artists that have honed their craft throughout the years. They deserve all the success.

Every BTS MV has English subtitles, so we know what they are singing about. And if you don't understand English, there are volunteer ARMY to translate into almost every language.

I certainly agree with all what he had said. In addition to that BTS is one of the kpop artist that stand out and loved by their fans and people who would know them because they are so humble and sincere with their craft. Thats the reason why they stand out and shine. Great musicians.

My sister and I have been BTS fans for 3 years and we still can't totally sum up why BTS is so famous. But its definitely a package. One thing I know, the love they get is due to who the members are and how they inject their personalities into their music. That's missing in a lot of the other groups. You can't manufacture relatability.

I love them because they’re genuine about their passion. You can tell how much they pour of themselves into their craft. I love that they’re humble and relatable. Their bank accounts are doing so well yet they still value those Panda Express coupons. 💜

The biggest difference between BTS and other groups is they actually love their fans, and give back to them in a way never seen before.

The unique thing is not only did BTS made a name for theirselves but also for their company. Everyone loves a Cinderella story and would root for someone with such great personalities. Their is no other group like BTS because now the bar has been raised. Its originality, genuineness, and hard work. And to have their stages in life in music that people relates to and follow is what makes them loved by many. It’s BTS phenomenon, not kpop phenomenon. He had a lot of answer where he wanted to dodge BTS fame saying “actually kpop”. I felt the last 2 Questions weren’t answered correctly. I also wanted to add, read the comments, all the longest answers are the reason. There are so many reasons, we can’t write them all. It’s not just because of music. No artists makes people feel like they are a family and cared for like BTS. BTS can really make a place into your heart.
