Newmarket: Pre-arrival video of fire rapidly growing at townhouses 8-26-2021

At 8h pm on Thursday August 26th fire broke out on a second floor unit of a residential townhouse complex in Newmarket, Canada. Central York Fire Services along with York Regional Police were deployed urgently to the call at the corner of Maciver Blvd and Bathurst St. Early amateur vertical cell phone footage shows the first moments of the incident where a bystander is seen putting water from a garden hose onto the growing flames. Due to their rapid intervention, firefighters managed to overcome the start of the fire and prevent further spreading and damage. The intervention that coincides with a heavy long term heat wave was caused by a defective air conditioner unit and fortunately left no one injured.

    2 minutes to clear the call in the 911 dispatch center- police are told first, fire second, about a 30-50 seconds for the truck to leave the station, so 3 minutes there - 2- 3 minutes to get to the area- looks fine to me...

    The person behind the camera commenting is far from a "wannabe", they are just being an armchair quarterback or a "Karen" because they are ignorant of the actual time it takes to get an emergency call out to responders, and how long it takes for those responders to arrive due to preparation time in the case of the Fire Service. location they are responding from, and the need for caution enroute due to uncooperative drivers, traffic, weather and road conditions. 10-15 minutes is an excellent response time for any first responders, and I speak from personal experience. thank-you for your support of emergency responders though.

    Gotta maintain those air conditioners. Every year the coils should be hosed with water to get the dust and dirt out. Window AC’s: take the whole metal cover shroud off and clean out the condenser coil‘s. Just spray it with the garden hose. You’ll see muddy dusty dirt come out. This can overheat an air conditioner, plus by doing this you’ll get way better cooling. The water from the hose won’t hurt the machine in anyway. Central air conditioners too. Clean those coils! (unplug it of course, hopefully that goes without saying🙄)

More important, NEVER go back into a burning house, do not try without any protective gear, training to try and suppress a fire with a garden hose putting yourself at unnecessary risk. I’m originally from the UK, I’m an FF here in Canada now, the obsession with ‘going interior’ is unbelievable, I’m told cooling from a safe location (hitting it hard from the yard) isn’t manly enough. God forbid you apply water to the fire and perhaps improve conditions for any victims still inside the structure prior to transitioning to interior operations. A straight stream directed at an acute angle into the involved room can quickly reset that room to pre flashover conditions and lower the temp in the uninvolved areas by 400deg F, thus making those spaces survivable for any casualties in there. But trying to explain this to most NA firefighters is like talking to a pike pole.

After 25 years i have always found that if you do that the interior crews can move much quicker once they are inside and start searching as you have knocked the fire back ,reduced the heat and removed the chance of a flashover or backdraught. Pretty simple really.

    When you have just one room burning and use a deck gun you can do more damage with the deck gun than the fire will. Also if someone is trapped you can end up causing more harm pushing smoke and fire towards them if neither has reached them yet. Anyway deck gun is very useful very powerful they knock down a lot of fire but not every fire is deck gun fire.

    While at the same time finding an appropriate parking spot far away from the scene so that he had to walk or run the rest of the way so his POLICE VEHICLE didn't block fire trucks, which if you watch again and pay attention this time, it didn't. The fire trucks had plenty of room to get around the first cruiser on scene, which was a safe distance from the involved structure, on the opposite curb and nowhere near directly in front. Where is the spot in this footage where the police impeded the fire service and when would you have suggested the officer stop doing their job to park elsewhere? The officer was, as you said yourself, checking on whether there were still occupants in the burning home, and keeping people safely away. When do you suggest was an appropriate time to walk away from doing that? I know, people ALWAYS listen to the police when instructed to do something and there is no way more curious people would have walked into the area should the officer have left to repark their cruiser which was not obstructing anything.

    Not sure why this comment keeps coming up but once more, there was one police unit that was first on scene, and responsible for ensuring that everyone was out, that no one attempted to go back in, and that everyone was a safe distance from the structure on fire, which is a lot for one person to do.... but you want them to park a mile away and run up so you can then complain about why the police arrived so late. Also, I do not see at any point in the video where police impeded the Fire Service but I did see one white car that was in the way because the driver didn't seem to get that the road was closed and that was why there was a police cruiser in front of them and a fire truck behind them, on the air horn to move.

You don't close off the entrance period. Normal fire operations dictate a truck be positioned in the front with 1st engine. The 1st officer who arrived on scene should have parked elsewhere and try to determine if everyone was out. 7 minutes response time for this area is not in line with acceptable practices. @@charlesmock4053 Sir, are you a fire fighter? Are you a police officer? Are you a paramedic? Where do you draw your knowledge from? Yes, I was a police officer for 10 years and a Patrol Supervisor. I responded to many, many active fire scenes and MY first priority upon arrival is PRESERVATION OF LIFE not following some bizarre unwritten code of conduct cooked up in your mind. I have been in burning structures to rescue occupants and I am not parking 3 blocks away when my primary responsibility is at that scene. The officers were CLOSING THE ROAD TO ASSIST THE FIRE SERVICE NOT BLOCKING THEIR ACCESS! 7 minutes response time is MORE than acceptable for ANY AREA but you wouldn't know that because your actual knowledge of what is happening here or at any emergency scene is showing clearly with your repeated conjectures that anything was done incorrectly here because IT WASN'T! The fire service, police and EMS work TOGETHER and our jobs cross over lines in reaching the goal of preservation of life and protection of property, so, I AM Sticking to my job as a police officer by doing exactly as I have done and as the officer did in this incident did. Emergency Scene Management is PART of the JOB of POLICE even if that happens to be a fire scene. That includes ROAD CLOSURES, TRAFFIC CONTROL, and CROWD CONTROL to ensure that the fire fighters are unhampered in their operations. As first responder that also means controlling the immediate scene and parking away from it increases the amount of time it would take to "determine everyone was out" and thus reduce the chances of being able to affect a rescue if that had not been the case. So, unless you have served or currently serve as a fire fighter and a law enforcement officer, your evaluation of what took place here is invalid and YOU SHOULD LEAVE POLICE AND FIRE OPERATIONS TO THE TRAINED PROFESSIONALS INSTEAD OF PLAYING ARMCHAIR QUARTERBACK FOR A SITUATION THAT YOU HAVE HAD NO EXPERIENCE WITH AND STOP INSULTING THE GOOD WORK THAT THESE BRAVE EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL PROVIDED IN THIS INCIDENT AND ALMOST EVERY OTHER INCIDENT THEY HAVE TO DEAL WITH. In closing I would also like to address you comment about "If your (sic)(you need to learn the difference between your and you're because you used the wrong one) a LEO..." I do not have a bad attitude. I am not insulting you by calling you names nor have I but I will not be lectured or have others risking their lives to do a very difficult and often thankless job be belittled or berated by the likes of someone who has no knowledge or experience in what they are talking about. My attitude in addressing you is exactly appropriate as you get what you give. You want respect, then give respect. If my career of helping people and saving lives was a "stain on good cops" then I would hate to meet or work with those you consider "good cops" if that means running from danger, not giving of yourself for the well-being of others, being firm but fair with all while remaining unbiased, respectful and objective. If that was being a "stain" then I guess I am a stain, but I could introduce you to hundred of people from the community that I served who would prefer to haver my "stain" on their lives as opposed to not and that includes victims of crime, the general public and even many of those who ended up on the wrong side of the law. You, sir, are opinionated and are trying to be a bully and my one bias is I do not like bullies no matter where they are from. You are entitled to your opinion because that is your right but it is my right to correct the errors in your opinion based on my experience, training and expertise, all of which you obviously lack other than what you have learned snippets of from watching KZread videos.

  • @BrotherExperimentus
    @BrotherExperimentus2 жыл бұрын

    To the attention of the person who was behind the camera here, have some respect and courtesy for those who risk their lives daily to save others that they do not even know, selflessly. You commented about how long it was taking for the fire department to arrive and that the closest station was only a short distance away without knowing when or if anyone had called 911 or if the closest station was not already engaged in a call elsewhere. 7 minutes is a really good response time for the fire service who have to receive the call from the dispatcher who has to take the information from the caller before being able to contact the response units and then these brave souls need to record that information while getting geared up and starting the engine before having to fight with traffic enroute to the location of the emergency. Traffic that usually does not yield to emergency vehicles immediately or at all. So while you are standing there criticizing these courageous people for doing a fantastic job of responding to risk their own well-being and lives, while you were standing behind a phone camera a block away doing absolutely nothing to help your neighbours by: ensuring 911 has been called with appropriate information (which you wouldn't have given since you were filming the wrong building at the start); and rather than shouting weakly from your safe position to get out of the house instead of putting the phone away and actually running over to ensure everyone was out by knocking on doors and asking those around, as well as actually, physically directing them to get back; perhaps asking someone to go to the nearest major intersection to direct emergency responders in to the right area in case the information they got was not clear or incorrect; but most of all if you plan to do nothing but make a video for your own personal glory on KZread documenting the actions of those who are doing a job you are obviously too afraid to do yourself, then at the very least be thankful and respectful for their being there and commend them, do not condemn them over something you know nothing about. It is truly disappointing to know that there are people such as yourself making disparaging comments like "They're already out... #%*$ man." when the Fire Department began knocking and calling to see if anyone was still inside while you are not even close enough to capture the names of these heroic fire fighters on the bottom of their bunker gear in 5", reflective lettering, and you didn't go over to tell them that others had knocked without response pre-arrival, which if you knew anything, does not mean there is nobody inside. As a veteran Police Officer, I want to extend my congratulations and admiration to the great response and work exhibited by the York Regional Police and the the Central York Fire Service in this video. You are heroes all and appreciated by many. Please, be safe and thank-you for all that you have done, all that you do, and all that you will be called upon to do in the future.
