So all this bill actually did was take away the ILLUSION of choice in signing up, since it’s pretty impossible to get by in life without registering.

They passed a similar bill in the 1980's and I thought it was still in place. Right after it passed I was enrolling in college. The educational advisor told me I would have to register and I pointed out that weeks earlier I had just left the military. She got a look and went to check. Since, three weeks later I would be too old to sign up, I still had to go to the post office and register.

It still is in place - this just expands registration from 25 to 26. This is a show bill. The only halfway interesting part is the proposal by Josh Hawley to require women between 18 to 24 to register - and that will never pass.

military recruitment has been at all time lows. No suprise given that it is usually the kid from flyover country, the south and those who are more conservative that have traditionally joined up. And these type of people do not want to serve a current military that under political pressure has become far left. My family and many friends have a tradition of serving for many generations and I have seen so many of them leave the Military saying they cannot stand what the military has become.

They already passed a similar bill in 2021 to include women for equity purposes. So I would think that this automatic enlistment will include females of the same age and men identifying as women.

Why is this news? When you turn 18 as a newly minted man , you have to register for "Selective Service" (DRAFT). Which is basically ask which of the branch of the military would you like to go into if you were drafted? But we didn't have a draft.

OMG once my son and all his friends graduated in 2014 that turned 18 years old. They all received a letter for the draft. You have to sign those papers and mail them back in to serve your country in time of need. They are all 28. doesn't mean they are safe from being drafted yet. If you don't sign and come after you it is a federal offence.

I spend 21 years in the military but if i was young i will joined it again. I love all the action in the military. In 21 years I got to visit many countries and went to Kuwai and here i am.

The reasons you're not going to see a draft for women is that most can't pass the physical training, those that do often aren't welcome in their units, and R is also a factor not often talked about. BUT -- I don't think this draft is for war. I think it's to enable a faster way to increase the national guard for whatever happens after the election. All state and federal agencies are worried.

Didn't we always have have to register? I had to register twice because the government screwed up. I kept getting letters.

As a male that turned 18 shortly after 9/11 I was required by law to register. Not only should everyone be registered automatically, women should be added.

I think the best option would be to require everyone to do 2 years of service, though military service shouldn't be the only option. Programs like the WPA during the Great Depression that employed people to build infrastructure and do art could be an alternative to military service. Likewise, having people serve in their communities for emergency services would be good. Granted, they wouldn't be fully qualified, but such agencies are generally understaffed, and having people around to pick up the light work and gain experience would be beneficial. Who knows, they might like it and make a career out of it when they might not have otherwise.

why aren't women being drafted as well??? women want the benefits of men but the responsibility of children

Since when did you not have to sign up for Selective services?

You were already legally required to do this, they are just making it automatic now. The interesting thing is it would include women for the first time.

Go fight for the new comers to take your family and spot and never be drafted

I still have my original draft card from 1974 I carry it in my wallet every day. It reminds me of what could of bin. If I had been called up I'm quite sure I wouldn't have made it. With those thoughts I still would have gone and fought for who stood beside me. This is a tough pill to swallow I know.
