    We have many low rise buildings in the downtown core but because it's the oldest city in North America they've enforced very strict height regulations down there in order to preserve the heritage and view of the city. The tallest building in the city however is the confederation building, it's much further north into the city and serves as the provincial parliamentary building. Many people only ever see the downtown area of St John's but in terms of the cities borders it's about 4 times the size of San Francisco.

Also, would you say that your city is quite diverse in terms of population's nationalities and languages ? (Or is it predominantly british/scottish /irish?) and the last question..for someone moving from another province is it difficult to find a job?

    They dont kill whales and seal hunting is a very humane and necessary practice. In fact the seal population is out of control at the moment and they are killing off many fish populations especially cod.

    @@Countrybananas I was referring to Farley Mowat's book, A Whale for the Killing. No matter how long they will never be able to shake off the bad reputation for killing whales and seals. I would prefer to suggest that the lack of fish is a result of modern fishing boats as compared to wooden ships from 100 years ago.

  • @Countrybananas

    @Countrybananas

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@martinsinclair55 I don't think you have enough knowledge on Newfoundland to be making claims like that. Newfoundlanders don't have a bad reputation for whaling or sealing and they're generally regarded as the nicest people in the world. Whaling was a common practice amongst all seaboard countries for hundreds of years and it hasn't taken place in Newfoundland since 1972. Sealing is extremely necessary. Its highly regulated/ humane in order to keep the population in check and keep them from destroying entire ecosystems, I guarantee that you can't give me a reason as to why it shouldn't occur. Also it's not about what you'd prefer to suggest, Newfoundland is very strict and again highly regulated when it comes to monitoring and protecting its cod fish populations and has only put more emphasis on doing so since the cod moratorium of the early 90s. You can find countless articles on how bad seals are for cod populations in Newfoundland. So dont talk to me about modern fishing boats when Canada shut down one of the oldest fisheries in the world causing what is now known as the largest industrial layoff in Canadian history in which 40,000 people lost their livelihood all to protect the precious cod who were only being over fished by other countries not staying in international waters and respecting their borders. You have no idea of the hardships newfoundlanders have faced and the perseverance they've shown. Try looking in your own backyard for your own ecological sins before criticizing theres because they're one of the most environmentally/ecologically friendly places on earth and you'd be lucky to live there.
