They may be referring to the Vikings, who settled [for a short while] hundreds of years prior. They left because it got too cold in the 1400’s (the area experienced a ‘little ice age’), and some scientists also believe there was a drought that decimated their crops.

Loved seeing your views on St. John's. I was out there about 10 yrs ago working for a quary (SW of town) on their Asphalt plant. Went to Signal Hill (still got my mug). Also went to Cape Spear, took photo of me by the East Most Point sign, but had clouds & rain, so no sunrise. Toured around some evenings after work. This eas spring, saw a few big icebergs stuck in bays, nany more to the north floating (600mm telephoto lens). Did you see any icebergs? There were even boat tours out to some.

Well Happy Anniversary! When I first saw the promo for this I thought you were at Cadillac Mountain in Arcadia NP. That is the place to be the first in the US to see the sun come up. It is also the furthest down east you can go in the US.

Great video you two...I live just up from Quidi Vidi and do the walk around Signal Hill 3-4 times a week....weather permitting. We have some very challenging weather here in Newfoundland, especially on the East Coast ..as I am sure you two have experienced

Thank you for sharing your anniversary sunrise with us! Congrats on 32 years! Maybe you know this but NFLD during WW2 was a Dominion of the Commonwealth. In WW1, they sent so many of their men across to fight and few returned because most of the Dominion’s regiment was slaughtered in the Battle of the Somme (90% casualties 😢) in the Battle of Beaumont. Those structures you toured were the first paycheques many people had seen in years. In fact the Dominion of NFLD didn’t send troops to WW2 because they didn’t have enough men. The story of how NFLD became part of Canada in 1949 is an interesting one.

The Battle of Beaumont Hamel was on July 1st 1916. On July 1st in Newfoundland they remember the fallen in the morning and Celebrate Canada Day in the afternoon. Over 7000 Newfoundlanders volunteered for the Royal Navy, Army and Airforce as well as joining Canadian units in WWII.

In 2016 CBC aired a documentary all about Newfoundland and the men of Battle of Beaumont Hamel, the world owes those brave men of Newfoundland.
