What an amazing atmosphere, this was when FA Cup semi-finals were momentous occasions with both teams just one step from Wembley. Playing the semi-finals at Wembley ruined the magic.
That pass from Hibbett to MacDonald for the second Utd goal was absolutely sensational.

These were the days....My boyhood favourite players.loved this newcastle team.went on to play Liverpool in the final losing 3-0. Supermac what a striker👏👏👏Brian Moore was the best football commentator of all time....used to love watching The Big Match.
I love the excitement in Brian Moore's voice when Supermac scores the 2nd. Best commentator by far. RIP.

No atmospheres like that anymore. Love that Newcastle strip. Supermac real 70s icon, great times
Unbelievable atmosphere compared to today, that Hillsborough Kop looks fantastic without the roof

Little Terry . what a ball on the half volley,, well done supermac and the geordie army .
Shivers up my spine
Tudor Hibbitt Supermac, my fav FA cup goal ever.👏
This was the match Oz talked about in Auf Weidersen Pet. 😅😅😅
Back in the days of terracing 50,000 crammed into one end terrace.. Mental times ,but awesome to witness.. The Early Toon Army . A sight to behold... Noise of a thunder storm , The smell of cheap burgers piss stained bogs and bovril... Intimidating and mind blowing...A natural force unleashed to the public !! At this time in history most people were shit scared of Newcastle and its people... Fierce Loyal and no time for fools !!!Newcastle United was a massive release for the frustrations of the overlooked North East folk...Tough people who learned to overcome any hardship... Hence the saying .Fuck with one Geordie ,you fuck with them all !!! As a life long fan . I am more proud of the support and the Geordie nation as a whole.. Especially today as Greedy Oxygen thieves have hijacked our team club, community !!! Shame on the 1%ers and fuck them!!!! They will eventually crash and burn as all things come full circle... This time was probably The pinnacle of N.U.F.C. As a champion of working class folk...

Incredible atmosphere, different sections of the ground singing ‘United’ and ‘Howay the lads’ out of synch. Was it a working class club? Most of the fans were, and filled the Leazes End not the Gallowgate like today. But even then there was much unrest and regular chants of sack the board. There were rumours of corruption and gate receipts deliberately low and the feeling it was a cash cow for the Directors like Lord Westwood, McKeag and Seymour if I remember rightly. They had all been sleeping since 1955 (1969 was an anomaly) and unbeknown to all the fans worse was to come, Gordon Lee, Richard Dinnis and relegation due decades of mismanagement. It wasn’t until John Hall stepped in that the giant came to life and briefly flourished under Keegan and Robson.

@Mini van The capacity of the Kop at Liverpool was around 27,000 at its peak. Some of these estimates for the open end at Sheffield are ridiculous. The attendance for the entire ground was 55,000 that day.
Day after my BIRTHDAY NICE PRESENT
The EPL and importation of foreign players and managers has a lot to answer for. So much better in '74.
Was 11 years old at this game, very lucky boy to be there, Burnley was unlucky played really well.. But with Mac in your side anything was possible... Still my fav Newcastle number 9.. To think we now have joelinton wearing that number 😔

Amazing to think that semi-finals weren't even shown live in those days! Only the final!!
,, in peace Terry Hibbitt ,what agreat player ,has there been a better left foot half volleyed pass since i doubt it .Terry had a great left foot, seen him play many times for Newcastle, and Gateshead ,Malcolm Macdonald, was a great striker,he had a great left foot aswell, how much would they be worth in todays transfer market.
I was a young 15 year Claret at that game and though Super Mac scored 2, I was proud of the Clarets

Mc Faul was the MOM
I'm an old git - and I'm more a rugby player than a football player but I know these players first names - I couldn't name a single one of the current crop. The players have moved away from the plebs - I remember seeing Iam McFaul and Bobby Moncur at Seghill big club (as opposed to the Comrades) they were still on the same planet as their fans.
Great game incredible atmosphere, proper ball proper pitch.......my dad in crowd, sound like a dinosaur😞

FA Cup semi final day used to be a massive occasion , I used to love this day with packed attendances and incredible atmosphere. The brainless FA have ruined it by moving these games to Wembley.
I was 8 years old at the time living in Nottingham running around with my Newcastle shirt on constantly getting abuse of Forest fans who thought I was a County supporter. Never lost love for Newcastle United. I'm 57 now. I remember this game because my step dad was from County Durham who was a miner in Worksop. Avid Newcastle United nut to this day I am. Not sure there's even a word destructive enough to properly describe what Liverpool did to them in the final. Doubt anybody in cup final history has ever given their opponents as much motivation to win as MacDonald's big gob did.

McDonald said big things before his arsenal debut an lost at home to Bristol city an gave it large about Ipswich in 78. Didn’t have much luck
The ball by Hibbert for the 2nd goal was different class.
