That bridge was installed in 1968. At the time Northumberland Street was the A1 main road. There was another footbridge at the other end of Northumberland Street, at the junction with Northumberland Road, installed just before Christmas 1967. I am not quite sure when they were taken down, but they had gone when John Dobson Street opened in May 1970. On the evening of 30 November, 1969, a huge fire gutted Callers furniture shop, and damaged several other properties. Northumberland Street never conveyed two-way traffic after the fire; it was closed completely for about a week, and then reopened to northbound traffic only. Five months later, John Dobson Street opened, and Northumberland Street became one-way southbound, for buses and access only. There would have been no need for the footbridges by then. Full pedestrianisation did not come until c1989.

The city centre just a pale shadow of its former self. As for local high streets, nothing but barbers, nail bars and take aways.

Ahhhhhhhhhh, the good old days where women dressed like women, and our town was a pleasure to go to. Not like today. This was back when our town was a thriving hub full of small businesses and bargains galore. Where there was plenty of choice and lots of diversity. Today the town is a sh** hole. The city centre has been taken over by giant conglomerates (INTU) and have turned the place into an eyesore. The shops are all gone, due to high rents, and small businesses can no longer afford to be there. The Grainger Market is empty, with very little choice any more, and every little stall that closes is being turned into yet another eating place, as if we didn't already have enough. The entire bottom (and part of the top end) of Eldon Square is now full of over priced, over rated eating places which are all empty. The streets are absolutely FILTHY and never cleaned and litter abounds as well as giant rubbish bins that sit all over the streets. There are times when I walk down Grainger Street and my feet literally stick to the pavement. When was the last time anyone saw a street sweeper in town? Gallowgate and St James Boulevard are now LEGO LAND and full of nasty looking, ugly buildings for students and still more being constructed. Our city has been and is being systematically destroyed. The Brewery is gone, the Co-Op is gone and the magnificent building turned into an eye saw that matches the ugly GATE white elephant. Our town is a wasteland now full of students, migrants, drunks and druggies and is no longer a place of history and beauty. It's filthy and ugly and empty. And don't let me even get started on the Bigg Market. That is a disgrace. But, thanks for the memories.
