B or D are possible answers depending on how to understand the question Is it (5/5)/(5/5) or (((5/5)/5)/5). Using PEMDAS leads to answer D and seeing it as two fractions it leads to B

One way is you can see quickly that the answer must be a decimal between 0 and 1, so 5^(-2) is the answer, but to solve it really, go from left to right -> (5)/(5)/(5)/(5)=(1/5)/5=1/25=1/(5^2)=5^(-2).

So complicated for what? When I saw it, I see it as just applying Indices. I just combine them into a single 5, and then the power is: 1-1-1-1

I'm puzzeled by this. Repeated exponentiation is computed from the right, so 2^2^2^2=65536 and not 256 which you get if you compute from the left. But repeated division is computed from the left, why?😮

Tower of exponents is a different thing altogether. 5÷5÷5÷5 can be expressed as multiplication of fractions (÷ changes to × followed by the reciprocal). 5×⅕×⅕×⅕

NO! You must divide from left to right, so 5÷5÷5÷5 = 1÷5÷5 =1/5 ÷ 5 = 1/25 = 5^(-2) I hope that helped

I don't agree. It seems to me that the answer should be 1/125 (1) 5/5=1, (2) One divided by five = 1/5, (3) 1/5 divided by 5=1/25, (4) 1/25 divided by 5= 1/125=.08

The result is 0.04. Your mistake is that you divide once too much by 5. 1. 5/5=1 2. 1/5=0.2 3. 0.2/5=0.04

Pathetic. I resolved this in less than 5 seconds in my mind to the actual result, not some expression representation of it. I'm well into 60's, mind you. Get me my well deserved scholarship.

Why do you people keep writing problems like this, mathematics does have rules you know. And if you solve this problem by the rules the only answer can be 1, because of what the division sign means, each division sign must have a numerator and a denominator or the problem will be undefined, meaning you cannot solve it, so you must have 2^x number of terms to separate the problem into numerator denominator pairs, when you do this you get: (5/5)/(5/5) = 1/1 = 1, and this is the only answer you can possibly get, and notice PEMDAS AND BODMAS mean absolutely nothing when solving this problem, and there is no left to right or right to left priority.

Why did you use brackets while claiming math does have rules when the task doesn't have any brackets? Let's use more simple calculation without fractions involved. 8:2:2:2=?. One? Or four (8:2):(2:2)=4:1?

0.008 is (0.2)³ or (1/5)³. It seems to me that you forgot to type in the initial 5. If you include the initial 5 you'll get 0.008 * 5 = 0.04, or 5/5³ = 1/5² = 5⁻² (whatever way of calculation you like best, it's all the same, of course).

@@josdurkstraful 0.0016 is (1/5)⁴ so instead of multiplying with 5 you instead divided by it. So where 5/5³ should simplify to 1/5² you moved the 5 from the numerator to the denominator and instead calculated 1/5⁴. I think you might benefit from a course on how to use a calculator! 😛

@@josdurkstraful "Is it really that stupid to type that in a calculator and get 0.0016?" - Man, you don't want me to give you an honest answer here! 😂 I'm really not sure how a calculator will show you 0.0016 as a result if you use it correctly. Like I tried to explain before, you'd have to divide by 5 four times, when the question needs you to take 5 as a starting point and divide it three times by 5. The first time will cancel the two 5's and leave 1. The two subsequent divisions will lead to 1/5² = 1/25 = 0.04. Not sure what else I can say without seeing how you use your calculator...

I do not agree with the solution.
