The Righteous Brothers were a great duo of the 1960s. Bobby Hatfield sang high tenor, Bill Medley sang baritone-bass. They started with a different name, but after singing at a soul club that catered largely to black personnel from a nearby Marine base, and being told by the appreciative crowd, "That was righteous, brothers!", they knew they'd found their new name. Unchained Melody got its start as a pure instrumental, a tune written as the romantic theme for a dramatic movie simply called Unchained , about a man imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit, but who is sustained by his love for the woman loyally waiting for him on the outside. The tune got some airplay on the radio, lyrics were later written for it, and that's what brought it to the duo's attention. Because it was so obviously a one-singer song, they literally flipped a coin to determine who would sing it, and the right guy, Bobby Hatfield, won. Bill Medley would have looked silly just standing there doing nothing, so he always stepped off and surrendered the stage to his partner and friend for this song. You've Lost That Loving Feeling, Unchained Melody, and Soul & Inspiration are the perfect trifecta of Righteous Brothers songs. You've Lost That Loving Feeling, in particular, was the most frequently requested song on American radio of the entire twentieth century. You really ought to give it a listen.

Bobby Hattfield was one-half of the Righteous Brothers, and they were most certainly not "one hit wonders." They were a big bit hit here in the US in the 60's. I, as a teenager girl was among the many who had a crush on Bobby Hattfield after he sang this song on LIVE TV on the Andy Williams Show. There was no auto-tune, just his voice, LIVE on TV. He had only one shot at it - and you saw it. It's been considered arguably the finest televised live performance ever, of all time. The Righteous Brothers went on to record many other hits - like "You've Lost the Loving Feeling," "Soul and Inspiration," "You'll Never Walk Alone," "Just Once in my Life," "Georgia on my Mind," and others. But what you saw was Bobby's best. You'll never see a finer performance - or better talent - anywhere. Ever.

Bill Medley has the Base Voice, while Bobby Hatfield had the higher voice. Both voices could reach according to the songs need. In this show the Andy Williams Show Andy Williams interviews both artists and performs as well. The "Righteous Brothers" was a name that Bobby Hatfield (your singer tonight) and Bill Medley acquired while performing at a club in the south. When they had finished their show and were walking offstage, a black Marine stood up and said, "That's righteous, brother." Their singng style was often referred to as "Blue-Eyed Soul." Some interesting facts about this performance are: it was performed on The Andy Williams Show's Valentine's Day Special of 1965. The Bros were dressed identically and Andy Williams, who was a singing star right up there with the likes of Sinatra, Dean Martin, the late, RIP Tony Bennet, was attired in a pink pullover and white trousers for the VD Special. Andy talked with The Bros for a few minutes and Bobby was the main responder. He seemed to be almost gasping for air as he spoke, actually, he was suffering from an upper respiratory infection, a cold, bronchitis? Bobby also suffered from extreme stage fright to the point where he would lose his lunch, rather violently before going onstage. If that wasn't bad enough, his mother was in the audience watching him perform live for the very first time and he was very worried about disappointing her. Pretty sure nobody was disappointed with what has been called the best live vocal performance of all time.

He speaks of the waters and how they are what connects there love and he is asking her if she stills loves him and that if she is still waiting for him. You see many women would break up with soldiers while on duty, well he is asking hee if she'll wait for him till he returns . No auto tune or gimmicks just pure talent. He had a cold, his mother was in the audience watching him sing for the first time and he suffered with stage fright. Watch when he hits the last high note his face does not contort like other singers he just smiles and bites his lip as if to say 'I nailed it'. Fun fact about Bobby, he was into sports while in school and he was actually being scouted by pro baseball teams. He could have been a pro baseball player, but he chose his music and I am so glad he did. His nickname was The Blond Bomber. Bobby and his voice were truly a work of art, every song he sang was pure magic. For me, Bobby was the best singer God put on this earth, and he will always be my favorite. If you want to hear more of just Bobby try, "Only You", "For Your Love", "Love You for Sentimental Reasons", "Ebb Tide", " My Prayer", "Crying In The Chapel", "Stay With Me", "I Need A Girl", and many others. Him and Bill had several great hits together as well, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", "Soul and Inspiration", "I'm So Lonely", "Rock and Roll Heaven", and so many others. Okay, folks….a couple things if you are going to react to music…the most successful music reactions are from Rob Squad Reactions on KZread. The husband and wife are both school teachers in Oklahoma. So check them out to see why they are making a fortune doing this. I like that you don’t have to stop the video in the middle. So, the best music from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s…should be listened through headphones. See if you can somehow hook up 4 sets of headphones so you can hear the details. 60’s and 70’s rock music, for instance, is sometimes awesomely intricate to hear. You can sometimes hear the guitarist ‘s fingers sliding up and down on the strings through headphones! Baby boomers always wanted to hear every detail of rock music, and those years had the very best of rock music. There are several sub genres of rock music. So it’s fun to learn about this style of music. Secondly, try not to talk while the music is playing. There is so much that you will miss if you are talking. Unchained Melody is such a beautifully written song, musically. But the lyrics will make you cry, it’s is such an emotional song….about someone who hasn’t seen the one he/she loves for a very long time. And he’s saying he misses her so much, and he literally hungers for her touch and he wonders “are you are still mine?” All of you were talking so much throughout the music, no one watching you could actually focus on the song. We want to experience the song with you! We want to see your first reactions…so your facial expressions would be great. If you must talk before the song ends, pause the music, please. Say what you need to say and get back to the music. What are you noticing about the music? Talk about the music itself, talk about the lyrics. What’s it about? When the song is over, spend some time telling us what you liked about it, or learned about it. Maybe look up something on Google or Wikipedia which tells about the song, or about the band…how the song came about. We want to know, too. People like me will write all kinds of info about these songs and the band for you to learn. We grew up with American and British music…lots of huge fans out there who have studied their favorite songs, albums, and bands. Paul McCartney has said several times, when asked about what he remembers about certain songs or concerts, that his fans remember more than he does, sometimes. So you will get lots of info off comments. I hope you enjoy reacting to music! These days, so much of music is about hip hop, and in many families, they only listen to one genre of music all the time. Reacting to this music will open your mind, and the mind of your children, too! These days they record each musician’s part separately and then put it together via computers. They use auto tune if the singer is not recording well on pitch. They add sounds, electronically. Back in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s music was all recorded LIVE and sometimes it took them dozens of takes to get the recording they wanted, to make a record. And when they toured, the music they performed sounded just like the recording. That is not always the case these days because so much is done with computers now. Back in those days, the record label and managers had great marketing techniques. They would record 10-14 songs for a record album, but they would only release a “single.” It had one song on side A from the record, and one song on side B. The DJ’s on the radio would play the records sent to them. People would call the radio station to tell the DJ’s which songs to play again. The singles would often be the best 2 songs on the album. Or it would be one of the best songs on side A and a throw away song on side B. If the single became a hit, they would release the whole album months later. Fans could buy the single at the record store for about 80 or 90 cents. The album sold for about $3.50. If your band became popular, you would try to put out an album once a year and then you would go on tour and play all the songs on that album and songs from previous albums. Each tour was about 30 cities. One year the tour would be in America. The next tour would be in Europe, Japan, Philippines, etc. It was strenuous work for everyone involved. And they would be away from home for months and months. Just a tidbit of info: The Beatles were, and still are, the most successful rock band of all time. They had 21 Number #1 hits. That’s unheard of. They also had 45 more songs which got into the top ten on the billboard charts. And 75 more made it to the top 40 in the charts, which means they were in regular rotation on the radio, in America, across the nation. They hit it big in 1964 and they broke up in 1970. They recorded 184 songs total, as a group. So over 141 became big hits! Crazy! And every song sounds different from the last, which is also very unique for a band. 3 of the 4 were songwriters and all 4 could sing lead. Maybe that’s why they were so good.

This song is more than famous. It has been covered by over 600 other artists, though none of them ‘own’ it the way Bobbie Hatfield does. Professional music teachers, opera singers, experts in musical technique rave about the quality of his voice and his mastery of the medium. He was the rarest of masculine voices - a counter tenor, who could hit pure notes and hold them that many sopranos would struggle with. He rarely used falsetto. He didn’t need to. Unchained Melody was one of the most played songs of the 20th century. Another Righteous Brothers song “You Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” was the most requested song of the 20th century, That’s right! More than the Beatles or Elvis or anyone else you might care to name. It amazes me when people say they have never heard of them. They were and are among the giants of popular music. And as also every commentator notes - no auto tune, no gimmicks - just pure unparalleled talent.
