The ticket barriers are not broken. TFL often close lots of the gates at the busiest stations to slow down access to the station. This is carefully managed to prevent overcrowding.

The Circle line runs on the oldest track on the underground (including the very first part of the underground dug in 1863) but has modern trains that came in in the 2010s. The first part of the Bakerloo line opened in 1906 and the trains running on it came into service in 1972. They're supposed to be replaced eventually by New Tube for London stock (which is set to come in on the Piccadilly line next year) but that's shelved until the money is available, which will probably be quite a while

Very few places have air conditioning in the UK and the London clay holds and builds heat from train breaking. There are large ventillation systems, but things could be much better on the trains...all down to available funding as usual.

@@ActionKid I believe the newer stock which will be introduced in 2025 will be on the Piccadilly line, also the Metropolitan Circle and some District lines are air conditioned. The deep tunnels and shape of the tunnels is a bugger for air-con but slowly will be introduced.

Escalator etiquette. Stand on the right walk on the left. Londoners will remind you. If they say sorry they’re not apologizing. They’re kindly telling you to move out the way.

So much cleaner than NY’s subway.

There was a good flow of people going through the barriers, you were just queuing for the widened gate which is popular with people travelling with suitcases and children.

Going with the tube might be one of my favourite activites in London

AK London Tubes are very clean compared to NYC. I was surprised how wealthy 🇺🇸 is and all the expensive properties in NYC, yet the Tube Stations let NYC down.

@@ActionKid I think part of the reason the NYC subway system is so dirty is because the subway is open 24/7. The tube closes around midnight, I think, although it may be open later on Fridays and Saturdays so there’s time to clean the stations. I love the Tube map. It’s so much easier to read than the NYC subway map. The tube map is a schematic map whereas the NYC subway map tries to be geographical and it just doesn’t work. You should check out the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. It’s really interesting and I think they have a section about the evolution of the tube map.

@@cak813 Subways in Manhattan are mostly under streets on a grid so the need for a schematic map isn't as necessary. A more geographically accurate Tube map would look like spaghetti. There is a London style NYC subway map but for everyday use it isn't as good as the semi-geographical one. Also a lot of NYC subway lines use the same tracks in various areas which doesn't work well on the schematic version. MTA uses a schematic version for weekend changes.

I would rather stand on a crowded train in London than a crowded subway in NYC. Londoners are more civilized and respectful.

I used to use Bakerloo line everyday when I was in London. The line is very similar to Ginza line in Tokyo. (the oldest line , design of station and walls made of tiles) The interior of stations are more colorful and more advertise posters than I was there.

The 1972 bakerloo line trains have by far the best sounding motors on the system. Virtually the same as the 1972 victoria line trains replaced by the newer 2008 stock. Will miss it greatly when they go

AC isn't standard in the UK like the US. You will find it there in some businesses but not in many homes. Mainly because they have never really needed it as it doesn't get as hot in the summer. But recently over that past couple of summers it has been warmer.

Haha, you managed to pick the line with the oldest train stock running at this point. Personally I have a bit of a soft spot for them, they're kind of "vintage" now, but yeah, not especially representative of the average tube experience!

My wife and I were in London about 10 years ago. We had just gotten off a tube car and were standing on the platform looking at a map. I look up from the map to look down the platform. A train has just come in about 100+ feet down the platform and people were getting off. I can still remember it today. There was a wall of humanity from the tracks to the wall coming straight at us like a tidal wave. There was no way that they were going to slow down for anyone. I remember the look of the woman in front center of the crowd. I never saw such a determined look. There could have been a lion standing there roaring and she would have just pushed it aside and kept on going. I told my wife we need to move and we stepped into on of the side alcoves and the crowd just swept by like a flood. The look on those faces still creeps me out. Don't want to know what would have happened if we had not moved.

Subsurface lines like Circle, Hammersith, District and Metropolitan lines were built FIRST in late 19th century and were firstly operated with STEAM trains ! Tube lines date from early 20th century and were built smaller because digging deeper is more expansive. Bakerloo has the oldest stock in operation on the London network. The Circle and other subsurface lines have a newer stock from ten years ago. In two years Piccadilly line will have brand new stock from Germany. In paris, some line still have old stock about the same age if not older than the 72 stock. The remaining MF67s were built between 68 and 75 so they are about the same age. Line 11 even has some very old remaining trains from the early 60s (a handful but they will go away shortly to be replaced by new trains bought for the next year's line extension). If you don't like the heat on the Tube, never take the Central Line, it's the worst. Baker Street is also on the Metropolitan Line (and Circle and Hammersith which were just a new name for the different services that already existed part of the Metropolitan Rwy), it is THAT station that dates from 1863, not the Bakerloo one. Yes Marylebone is pronounced Marlebone for some reason (may be because it's easier). Stopping between stations is quite frequent during rush hours, when trains are very close to eachother, when one train is delayed because of someone obstructing the doors, the next train encouters a red signal at some point. "Mind the Gap Pls" is because many tube stations are curved and the gap between train and platform can be quite big, especially in the middle of a train car.

Bakeroo has the oldest trains on the network .. something to bear in mind

After Harrow and Wealdstone used to be Headstone Lane, Hatch End, Carpenders Park, Bushey and Oxhey, Watford High Street and Watford Junction. This service was cut in 1982. Only the Overground goes up there now...

So the Bakerloo currently uses the oldest trains on the Underground (though it's by no means the oldest line). 'Deep level' lines denote their rolling stock by year of design. From oldest to newest, the deep level lines currently use the following stock: Bakerloo: 1972 Stock (7 cars) Piccadilly: 1973 Stock (6 cars) Central: 1992 Stock (8 cars) Waterloo&City: 1992 Stock (4 cars) Northern: 1995 Stock (6 cars) Jubilee: 1996 Stock (7 cars) Victoria: 2009 Stock (8 cars) The 'sub-surface' lines use larger trains that a denoted by a letter. Currently all sub-surface line use a variation of the 'S' Stock. Hammersmith&City: S7 (7 cars) Circle: S7 (7 cars) District: S7 (7 cars) Metropolitan: S8 (8 cars)

I hope one day,the New york city subway can make the same good and modernize as the London underground.

That train is about 50 years old. They're replacing these in the next few years with walk throw and air conditioned trains

@@m.moolhuysen5456 The tube consists of 2 types of lines - deep lines like bakerloo and those that travel just below the surface. The latter lines now have new air conditioned/heat controlled trains. The piccadilly deep line trains will get new air conditioned and heat controlled trains rolling out from beginning of 2025 with the first trains coming off the production line in Germany.

@@richt71 I know that the lines build close below the surface have many large openings to the outside air, so there is no problem with running air conditioned/heat controlled trains there. I'm interested what is devised to deal with the heat that those new air conditioned/heat controlled trains will dump into the deep level tunnels, what is the plan to transport such a heat load outside of the deep level tunnels?

Thanks for showing us the London Underground AK! Perfectly done from a New York perspective. London and New York really are sibling cities in this age 😅 Awesome video AK. There was a lot of people there on a Saturday 💯 I liked the displays on the sides of the walls by the escalators. I also liked the curvy tunnels emphasizing and giving credit to the name "Tube". Whoa even the lights turn off on their subways too between gaps 😮 I agree, it is a smooth ride but to hear the AC isn't working well is a disappointment for this train model.

"I'm here in London's Piccadilly Circus, their version of Times Square." Times Square was named in 1904. Before that it was called Longacre Square after Long Acre in London. Piccadilly Circus was built in 1819 and both had lit signs in the early 1900s. It looks like Times Square is your version of Piccadilly Circus, mate!! (Although traffic circles were invented in America, and the British claim those "roundabouts" as their own so I don't think anyone's keeping count!)

Glasgow's underground railway (opened in 1896) is called the Subway.

You could just have walked up Regent Street, turned left on Oxford Street, turned right on Edgeware Road and left at Praed Street and arrive at Paddington. Without luggage it's a 20 minute walk.

Wow! I only get to see this subway in Train Sim World. Hope to try it one day.

I'm no expert but those are probably the oldest model cars (carriages!) on the Tube. You can tell by the pocket doors instead of outside opening doors that all newer ones have, like most modern subways except of course the NYC subway which continues having pocket doors on even the new car design just being introduced.

The Number 7 Bus goes from Pic Circus to Paddington For only 1.50 just as quick. Plus You can ride as many buses as you like within in 1 hour after the first tap no need to tap out on buses, Marylebone is pronounced Marlybon

I believe the correct pronunciation of “Marylebone” is “Mahr- leh-bun”

First part of the video is advertisement for free public transport, like they have in Luxemburg. All these gates must cost a massive amount of money to build, install, maintain and repair (not to mention the cost of all the vending machines). Plus, in case of trouble, they slow people down and cause a lot of stress and inconvenience.

Always interesting listening to a foreigner talking about the London Underground. These trains on the Bakerloo are over 50 years old (1972 Mk2 stock). Those on the Central line are newer and do have AC. For interest, the trains you rode on the Circle line are Surface S7 stock and not "tube" stock. Your pronouncement of Marylebone was correct - Marlabone. I hope you enjoyed your London trip.

When I visited London 5 years ago, my first trip on the Tube was on the Bakerloo Line, riding the 1972 Stock trains as you did. I was shocked at how old it was, and how hot it was inside. I didn't do my research beforehand, and had no idea that London tube trains were like that! The age of the train is not an indication of how old the line is. The oldest line in the London Underground network is the Metropolitan Line, actually. But they use the S8 stock which was introduced in 2010, and like the S7 stock trains that are used on the District, Circle and Hammersmith & City Lines, are air conditioned and modern.

The problem on the deep level lines is that the technology for AC simply didn't exist. You take the heat out of the trains which heats up the stations which gets trapped in the clay and keeps the stations hot. The geology of London is the enemy. It doesn't help that the deep level Tube was dug by hand which created its restrictive shape (cut and cover wasn't an option) which gave the system its name but limited the circulation of air.

My parents and I have been to London before.

I think you can still get a one day travel card for the tube and the buses but unfortunately they’re being phased out by January 2024 which is too bad. I always used to get those when I was in London. I saved a lot of money with them. Oh, how I miss the sound of the tube… it’s so wonderful to hear this, AK. The Bakerloo line is one of the older tube lines.

You can use a credit card with a chip to enter the gates, or Apple/Google pay on a phone or watch. The system tracks you through the day, and limits the maximum charge to the price of a one day travel card. That’s why the card itself is being retired… these other methods of paying give the same deal.

The Piccadilly line is getting new trains in 2025 they will be called 2024 stock, see Geoff Marshall’s video on his trip to Germany to see the new trains.

You noted it. It is a pretty deep station. Some are so deep, it feels like you are going into the entrails of hell, thus air conditioning is not possible. There is no appropriate vent for the hot air. District, Metro., and Hammersmith are the only ones with A/C, I think.

One way to walk around London is with a compass and a tube map......

That journey could have been made in, say, 1973 or even earlier, and it would have looked much the same. Another way to get from Piccadilly Circus to Paddington is to get out at the next stop, Oxford Circus. Then it is a short walk to Bond Street Elizabeth line station. Paddington is then one stop westbound! TfL (Transport for London) doesn't advertise the interchange from Oxford Circus to Bond Street (Elizabeth line) because they are concerned about overcrowding at Oxford Circus, though the whole thing will be charged as a single journey, despite the walk on the surface. Most apps would probably show it I suppose, and lots of Londoners would know about this, obviously.

Interesting ride. Two remarks: That train had evidence of WEAR. I could see places where something rubbed the covering of the metal. Made me wonder if train cars ever get replaced. Second thing somehow caught my attention. Two riders dressed in the Palestinian flag! OK, I've seen clothing incorporating the UK flag and the US flag. This couple was a first with the Palestinian flag. Funny stuff you see in a train station.

It took about 5 1/2 minutes to get from the entrance of the Piaccadilly Circus tube station to the platform. That's crazy. The London tube runs fast because of it's large curve radii, but if you loose about 8 minutes just to enter and exit the station you lose all the advantage of a fast subway.
