New York’s Electric Taxis in 1895

Electric cars may seem like a contemporary, eco-friendly concept, but did you know they made a brief appearance in 19th-century New York City? Back in 1895, hundreds of electric taxis called “Electrobats” cruised the streets of Midtown Manhattan. They had a charging station on Broadway and, unlike other vehicles, didn’t leave passengers covered in soot. People loved them! So what became of this set of eco-wonder wheels?

The vehicle shown was the Electrobat IV, displayed in Chicago during preparations for America's first horseless contrivance race. This contest occurred Thanksgiving Day, 1895. The Taxicab efforts came a few years later. By 1904, more Americans got their first ride in a horseless carriage by using an electric Hansom Cab!

People forget how commonplace Electric Cars were in the early 20th century, Tesla etc. isn't some hot new idea, its just businessman reviving a technology that died out under a century ago.

Detroit is called the motor city and people assume that mean petrol but it doesn't it means electric motors as that was the product of choice for them and that was what they were producing, later on petrol engines came around and replaced them but Detroit isn't known as the "engine city"

Found even earlier electric cars, 1830s and backwards. Each car ran up to 1200 miles on single charge, put today’s cars to shame really. Babcock was the first electric car company, or one of the first

memes ride the dankexpress yeah, it's just it wasn't really known until after World War 2, since the inventor was Jewish, the Nazis wanted to hide all evidence that the guy made it, luckily some people hid the original car the inventor made, and the car is now on display at a museum.

Electric vehicles were cheaper than the combustion ones and the range at the time was exactly the same! Plus the combustion engines required huge physical effort to turn on and were ALWAYS breaking down, unlike the electric ones! The reason they were discontinued was certainly not the cost! It was because electricity at the time was available only in large cities, whilst you could power a combustion car anywhere reachable by a truck with a gasoline load!

The Ford ICE vehicles were $500 cf EVs that cost between $1,500 & $4,000. Leaks from the lead-acid and nickel-iron batteries meant these EVs were much more expensive to maintain than the ICE vehicles.
