New York legislature passes bill setting maximum temperature for classrooms

Thursday was one of those hot days that might have closed some schools under a bill just passed by the New York State Legislature. It needs the governor's signature to become law. As CBS New York's Carolyn Gusoff reports, it sets a maximum temperature for classrooms.

How is it 20k per classroom to add Window A/Cs? Making contractors rich on the backs of public schools.

You have to design/modify the window to accept the AC unit and support it. The AC unit will larger to handle the occupancy. You have to upgrade the building electrical system to run all these classroom AC's at once without tripping the breakers.

They should just make it mandatory that all schools are outfitted with full heating and air conditioning systems and if they dont the state won't fund any other programs or grants until it is done further more they should turn off the air conditioning and turn on the heat in the BOARD OF EDUCATION ADMINISTRATION BUILDINGS! UNTIL THEY COMPLY!

They need that at Laguardia Bagroom. Its stifling in their. They refuse to turn on the A/C because they dont want to pay for the electricity. All we have is one fan per pier. Gets very hot.

You’re gonna hate it when you get out in the real world and you work in places where there will never be air-conditioning

It’s true. My first year teaching I was on the 5th floor walk up with no functioning air conditioner in my classroom. (That’s in 2018) It’s unhealthy and it’s very common. It exhausts you, increases negative behaviors in the classroom and a health risk factor. I believe this is a terrible condition of many of classrooms & schools throughout the city.

Went to NYC public schools in the 1970s and 80s and not one of the 3 schools had air conditioning or any fans. Guess what? We all survived. By the way, I don’t believe for one minute that a classroom on Long Island was 107.4 degrees……the media is such drama.

Are you serious???? This is what lawmakers are concerned about, this? I know classroom comfort is important, but maybe they can spend time working on crime legislation. Let the districts take care of their own AC.
