@samparkervideo When Edward Norton was unsure about directing his first film (Keeping the Faith) cause he wanted to make sure his directorial debut was something spectacular, Fincher told him "My first film was Alien 3". Lesson: You have to make a couple of mediocre movies in order to make some great ones. We can't all be Tarantino and debut with masterpeices. There aren't enough Asian movies for that.

Tarantito did not debut with Reservoir Dogs. He too shit the bed in his first strike. But yeah, your point stands.

Fincher is great...seems like a cool guy. I drew a lot when I was a kid. I couldn't do it from memory like most people, I copied a pictures. I remember drawing a lot of professional sport team logos.

No one else has achieved the impressive (IMO) results of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Vol I and II, and Inglorious Basterds. Results with Death Proof may vary.

@oscarxp25 That's how all the good drawers started, helps get the shapes in your head. Keep at it and you'll be able to do it from your head

I absolutely agree with the first couple of paragraphs. I think people easily forget how much filmmakers (or any artist) practice their craft before they present themselves professionally. At the same time, The Tarantino statement is inaccurate and misleading. Tarantino himself has spoken openly about his first effort (which you can find on KZread) to make a feature film and the utter failure it was. As far as Asian movies, there available to all filmmakers and despite attempts 1/2

Your love of Tarantino is actually very evident from your first comment and I see your point about his methods even if I don't necessarily agree with it. I also noticed that you made this comment a year ago and it seems unfair to be responding to it this far in the future. But luckily you saw it and I thank you for taking the time out to respond. P.S. I have similar feelings about the Dragon Tattoo although I still think its a pretty great film. Let's cross our fingers for 20,000 Leagues

Not really the same thing. Alien 3 had been through several directors and script revisions before David Fincher eventually came aboard to helm the project. He was put in a terrible position by the studio wherein he couldn't really be successful because of the total disorganization that was the production he inherited. Aside from that I wouldn't call any movies David Fincher has made "mediocre." The next picture he made after Alien 3 was Seven.

Really looking forward to 20,000 Leagues! =D I'm glad he's moving away from the contemporary-hype source work. It's apples and oranges with Fincher and Tarantino anway. There's a video up on youtube where Tarantino says pretty much the same thing .. we mustn't compare a writer-director with just a director.

@ilovepanslabyrinth Well... that could be argued... Panic Room and Alien3 are both not close to being great, but with those exceptions, I completely agree.

Look, I actually really enjoy Tarantino's work. I think Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are masterpieces. I think he writes sharply revealed characters, and he's visually very interesting. Having said that, Tarantino is a big fan of the pastiche or homage, and since I love East Asian cinema, I sometimes see that as imitation. I'm still a huge Fincher fangirl, but a little less so than I was when I wrote the comment a year ago. Dragon Tattoo was disappointing.
