New year, new home...new routines

In today's video I discuss my new routines, being in a new country, new home and new life. Minimalism & sustainability mean different things to different people. To me, it means stopping the need to do such a huge declutter and instead look at my consumption, limit it to things I truly want and need. Let's chat about things and dig deeper into budgeting as well as minimalism. To live that frugal, sustainable and happy life.

finding a co-op is much better than a zero waste store. zero waste stores are great, but in the USA they’re often more marketed as like high-end niche stores. they do their best, but the market just isn’t there yet in the USA. co-ops are full scale grocers that have great bulk sections and co-op pay schemes (you can shop at them without being a part of the co-op).

You probably know this already, but if you don’t: the library is a great place to peruse cookbooks. Showing my age, but the moose wood cookbook is a classic.

I get all my vegetarian cookbooks from the library! I can write down any recipes I want to try, and turn the book back in.

Hiya! Local here. Sprouts has a bulk section and allows your own containers. Just visit the cashier before you fill, and they note what the container weighs.

Hi Immy! The H Mart in Aurora is brilliant. There's also a middle eastern grocery store right across the street that sells the best olives ever! They come in bulk from their counter. It's called Arash. Love seeing all of your CO content, thank you!!

Not sure if it's the same, but in Canada, zero waste food is available at bulk barns, which allow you to bring your own containers. They often don't advertise themselves as zero waste, but the more affordable food shop. And they have all kinds of dried food, oils, nut butters and spreads, cleaning and pet food, not fresh produce.

Hello, local Denverite here! You have probably already discovered this, but in the metro Denver area I have found Sprouts (US grocery chain) to be the best zero waste option for food, pretty good bulk bins and plastic free produce section. Most of the zero waste stores in and around Denver that people have mentioned below are just for bath/body/cleaning products but the one at Edgewater Public Market has some food and lots of tea. Welcome to CO, hope you're enjoying it!

Hello! I saw the sponge and I don't know if you already tried but the loofah ones are pretty nice to clean and do the dishes. I use my self and I plant the loofah in the garden (one plant can give you 5 loofahs). It can be used for a while like 3-4 months and then is right in the compost!

Another fellow Denverite here! For local coffee roasters, I recommend checking out Huckleberry Roasters. It’s by far my favorite coffee in Denver, and they have a refillable coffee bean subscription program.

I have been using Dropps for the past couple years for my dishwasher and for laundry and have been really pleased. I live on the east coast of the United States. Look forward to gardening videos!

Yes to Dropps! I think I actually starting using them because of Shelbi! One box lasts me such a long time and they're very simple to use. I recommend :)

I love Japanese curry in winter and follow the vegan curry roux recipe from the just onecookbook blog. The commercial curry cubes have palm oil and msg, which doesn't work for me. Anyway I add Kuri squash, mushrooms, turnips, potatoes, carrots, zucchini and some greens like bok choy. So yummy.

Next time you go shopping in Aurora make sure to check out some of the Middle Eastern stores like Arash! Lots of nuts and produce in bulk but also great groceries in general. I love a local hummus that they sell there

I love Dropps! I have a sensitive nose when it comes to detergents and even some of their stronger scents are not too overwhelming. Comes in cardboard with no plastic and I store my laundry pods in a nice jar I thrifted.

Excuse me for being late to today’s video… I just came from an Alumni webinar which focused on how our gut microbiome impacts our overall health. There is so much fascinating info to learn!! The most impactful thing that I noted was the triangle relationship between diet - movement - mental health. It was 💯 reassuring to know that so much of what you/we focus on in this community and on your platforms, Immy, aligns with what science is telling us. Taking care of our gut, our body, and our brain is sometimes time-consuming but it is transformational. I was not surprised to note that all three professors on the panel promoted a whole food plant based diet, and also that we should be aware of nano-plastics and food toxins in and on our foods. There was also a large shout-out to high fibre foods and fermented foods!! Thanks so much, Immy, for all your inspiring content. You can be sooo proud that what we are learning from you aligns with what academia is suggesting for holistic health. PS - it’s nice to see you confidently getting behind the wheel… and driving in Denver!! Thanks again, Ⓜary💕🌿

I really like Dropps! Their laundry pods work great. The dishwasher pods work okay.
