New Water Pump on the V-Rod | It NEVER Ends!

A few months ago I noticed a bit of coolant coming from the weep hole on the water pump shortly after I reinstalled the engine. It eventually got pretty bad and made a huge mess on the side of the bike, so I was forced to replace it over the summer rather than holding off until winter like I had originally planned.

    I am about to do this exact same process on my 2008 with 36,000 miles on it. That price on the water pump is what sucks the most. Doing the job itself should be fairly simple. I guess it’s time to order some parts.

    Oh yeah, it's pretty easy, just messy. Don't forget to loosen the bolt on the front head and drain the remaining coolant, I forgot when I did the pump and it made a giant mess!

    That's no joke! I spent the better part of September down due to a failed throttle position sensor. It took me like 3 weeks to find one that worked. The first one I found was wired backwards even though it fit, so that one got sent back since it showed 100% at closed throttle, so I ended up calling 5 dealers to find one and eventually got one to send me the last one they had. Eventually the aftermarket will come into play on a lot of this stuff but it's rough right now!

    Final Charge Global 50/50 Nitrite-Free Extended Life for heavy duty engines is the one that matches the HD specs. I actually installed that in the rebuild, then had to do it again when I did the pump shortly after, and here we are a couple years later and it's time for another coolant flush lol. Stuff works great and it's cheap!

    Hello friend!! My bike is overheating, causing the temperature light to come on. Do you think it must be a water pump that is influencing the cooling system? There are leaking gears on the outside of the engine where the water pump is located...

  • @GearheadPhil

    @GearheadPhil

    6 ай бұрын

    If it's overheating, the triple sprocket bolt might have backed out, causing the water pump impeller to not spin. I have a other video on removing the left side cover to access that, check that out. But if you're seeing coolant seeping from the weep hole, then the pump is probably shot for sure.

    Amazing isn't it? I'm at about 33k miles now, with over 3k being on the rebuilt engine. I'm guessing the water pump bearings seem to have rusted while it was in a box for a couple months during the rebuild process, which lead to it leaking almost immediately after I got it fired up. The other issues I dealt with are fairly common little items, like the dirty ground connection, stator wire oil leak, etc. The spun bearing was my fault, I don't count that one 😂

    Love the video. I watched it twice before starting. I made a rookie boo-boo. I put my torque wrench to 86 ft lbs rather than inch pounds 😂 Stripped the head (part that the bit actually goes into) on 2 before I was like “OH CRAP”…. You think over tightening them will be bad if they seem to be holding and there’s no leak? Lol I felt so dumb.

  • @GearheadPhil

    @GearheadPhil

    2 жыл бұрын

    Ha, we all make mistakes. The main concern I'd be worried about is the stripped ones not being sealed and allowing water to enter but that's such a small amount that it would probably evaporate off. The gasket is probably crushed so it might need replaced next time it's off if it leaks.

    @@kylejarnold1 I don't remember where, but I picked up a PDF version of the manual shortly after I got mine. Check 1130cc.com for a link, that should get you started. As for the exhaust, spray the bolts with a penetrating oil like PB Blaster a few days prior to doing the work and they should come off without too much issue. Otherwise you might end up snapping one lol
