Many years ago now, I donated to the IQ^2 Kickstarter project to make a power meter to fit between the crank arm and the pedal axle. Perfect for use with Speedplay pedals. After IQ^2 revealed they could not make it work, they embarked on a standard pedal with integrated power meter. Not only are they of no use to me, I am yet to receive anything from them! I could have just waited for these.

Never heard of that one. Just looked it up. It really pushed the pedal outboard. It really would have added to the q-factor. The Kickstarter sure made it seem like they already had it figured out.

I did like the sound of those but I figured I'd wait until they went into full production... and as you know we're still waiting :-( I think they did push the pedal outboard by a not-insignificant 16mm (per side!) so perhaps that was seen as too much. Of course once they'd abandoned that idea they'd lost their USP so were in a much more competitive market... It's a shame, I'd have gone for them to put on my gf's ebike as she's been curious to know how much of the total power was hers. She may not have liked the answer but that's another matter :-)

@@The1trueDave They found in testing that they just didn't work. But these pedals from Speedplay mount the power meter on the pedal axle. Not exactly the same design but Speedplay have achieved it, while after I think 4 years, IQ^2 have still achieved nothing.

I have been using the Favero Assioma Duo pedals for over 6 months now and love them. These Wahoo pedals seem to have the same features at a much higher price point ($750 vs $999) with the only difference I can find is the pedal style. Curiously love to know if Wahoo has some feature or capability that the Favero doesn't have to justify the price jump other than pedal style?

  • @vincentlevalois

Other than the battery level indicators with colors, doesn't appear so. My Bolt tells me when the pedals are getting low which I love. And they last a very long time. The only gripe I have about the Assiomas are that they spin wildly which can make them difficult to clip in in certain situations. Other than that, they've been fantastic. I do think these Speedplays will do well but the price point, as you mentioned, is a bit high imo.

I am an old Speedplay user. I transitioned to Garmin with the Kleo pedal because I thought it was a great power solution. I have knee problems, however, that have come back. My physical therapist, who knows sports injuries well, recommends that I go back to Speedplay for the additional float. I have just bought these, and yes as commented below, it is a lot of money, but not for what I will be getting. I remember fifteen years ago when the best power meters were several thousand dollars more. I am looking forward to these and to relief on my right knee. Time will tell but I will report back.

Major reason why I won't be using these sadly. 2mm extra doesn't sound much but if you're really sensitive to these changes like me (not obsessive - some people can just feel slight differences and these affect their riding) maybe these won't be suitable. I also have my cleats outbound all the way and would even benefit from a shorter pedal axle than the standard Speedplay, but getting hold of these are near impossible. Will be looking at a crankarm-based powermeter as an alternative.

If you could physically compare the cleats you may see a difference? I've used Look cleats with my Assioma Duo pedals for 2+ years now and sometimes still get it wrong mainly when I'm tired. The initial clip in process is different compared to the Shimano too because there is more grip on the spd underside I got into the habit of pushing off with my supporting leg. I soon learnt I couldn't do this as much with Look as my foot would regularly slip. So now I push with the clipped in foot and away I go. Also got used to pedaling one legged if I fluffed a clip in. 😂😂

The Speedplay pedals were garbage. I bought a set years ago and immediately I felt no support. It was like standing on a couple of blocks of ice. Sure you are locked in to your cranks but you have to focus on stabilizing your balance especially when standing. Absolutely the worst pedals I've used and I have had them all. Shimano Dura-Are are the best pedals and that's all I will ever use going forward.

Sucks that you had a bad experience with them, and I'm glad you found a pedal more to your liking. For my dozen years of experience, however, Speedplay have provided incredible support, and the combination of sturdy pedal with the wide cleat setup always give me a strong sense of stability. Judging by how many pros have used Speedplay over the years, odds are they felt the same way, too.
