New VW Pertronix Billet Flame Thrower 3 Upgrade

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ya Baby! 5 stars and a Thumbs UP from TheEZGZ. Lately I have been disappointed with some of the after market engine parts currently available. This time it was everything I hoped for. Here is a link to where I bought mine. They have a lot of info and helpful vids as well as use them in there own VW daily drivers. shop.kaddieshack.com/Distribu...
NEW Pertronix Ignitor III Billet Distributor
Pertronix Billet Distributor with Ignitor III is our TOP OF THE LINE billet distributor... the very best we sell. It is the very best performance distributor on the market, packed with feature after feature. We challenge you to find a product that even comes close.
OPTIMIZED IGNITION ADVANCE CURVE: Comes with a factory preset performance ignition curve, set up specifically for high performance VW engines. For hot street or strip motors that need a custom curve, it comes with several springs and advance stopper cams that can be easily swapped to modify the curve to make over 80 different custom curves!
MULTIPLE SPARKS: Many manufacturers offer a separate box to enable the distributor to send multiple sparks to the spark plug. With this distributor, it is already included. This ensures your total air/fuel charge is ignited as efficiently as possible to squeeze the very most performance out you possibly can, and prevent misfires.
BUILT IN REV-LIMITER: Another fantastic upgrade that is normally found in a separate box, a programmable digital rev-limiter comes built right into this distributor with LED read-out. For ease and convenience in programming, the rev limit can be set with a 9V battery and a pair of alligator slips. Limits can be set in 100 RPM increments.
ADAPTIVE DWELL: Changes the dwell angle of your spark, and automatically adjusts for subtle timing changes needed at higher RPM's to maximize efficiency and power.
CIRCUIT PROTECTION: Just in case it's accidentally wired backwards to the coil, circuit protection prevents it from becoming damaged.
IMPROVED SPARK ENGERGY: Up to 500% more spark energy delivered to the spark plugs.
START-UP SENSING: Senses start-up and develops more energy for improved starts.
Requires special spark plug wires that fit the male terminals on the cap. It is also recommended that a Pertronix Flamethrower III ultra low-resistance coil is used for optimum performance.
NOTE: Since this unit already has multiple spark capability, it is NOT compatible with other multi-spark units, such as MSD, etc. pertronixbrands.com/pages/per...

Hi EZ,i run a petronics 2 on my new built 1640 DP, Dellortos(with i think, 48 throats & trumpets inside the K&N filters) . 8 years trouble free so far, syncing carbs was the thing that really made a huge difference,i used a 4 tubed carb sync as i have motorcycles as well, made syncing a lot easier, was slow & methodical with adjusting the linkages, been running like a dream.I have the same issue with my Jack Russle, goes mental in the bug untill we get a few miles up the road,he is lovely company on the longer trips.Take it EZ.Thank you for the Vid.

I own a Pertronix billet distributor, Flame Thrower 3.0 coil and 8mm wires. The car wouldn't start one day last week. I had to have it towed home. After we got home the car started right up and has every time since. I live close to the Pertronix company so I took the distributor and coil to them to test. Everything checked out OK. They did suggest I make sure the posts on the coil are straight across from each other, my coil is in a CB coil mount on it's side. They also said to keep the posts parrell to the ground as the + post can get hot. They gave me a back up coil for free.

@@TheEZGZ I sure will. I had to remove my engine last week and order a new head machined out to my 94mm pistons. I had the old alternator on my new engine and the alternator band clamp broke. I threw the belt and overheated the engine. 3 and 4 cylinder head came loose as a result and I melted a hole down the side of a stud bolt. The valves and everything else survived. So I now have a new alternator and brand new stainless clamp. Lucky only about a $400 to $500 AUD for the new head and machining. I have taken the opportunity to respray my tinware in a dark metallic grey with 2k clear on top. New braided lines and AN6 aircraft fitting for all my fuel lines. I have a video of my bug on my page. This was before it was run in. Ignore the loose belt in the video. I never drove the car at that point I had the engine running very rich to run it in. Check it out. I bought a pertronics III, SVD distributor, with Multi-spark, and when I try to time it, with a light, I’m getting readings, that are all over the place. I called pertronics, they said it was due to my timing light, picking up the multispark, and that I should try another timing light. I tried my neighbors timing light, with the same results. I tried timing it by ear, but the engine surges at idle. I took it out, reinstalled my double oh man, with pertronics II, and it runs great. Feel like I wasted my money.

I was a little sneaky. I tied the rear roll cage mount at the floor area of the rear seat. I extended the metal from the rear shock upper mount and laid a 2" square tube from one side to the other. That made things pretty solid but I wanted that upper deck tray to keep rain off the engine. I took to peaces of 1' flat stock from the upper 1 1/2 tube to the cross bar that holds my tail lights. You can't see the flat stock because it is behind the license plate. The lower is connected to the upper shock bolt like the traditional wrap around rear cage but I just came straight back on both sides. It's not real structural but I just wanted someplace to hang the lights and not have to mess with the frame every time I wanted to take the engine out. I'll try to remember to give you a close up on a future video.

It comes delivered with the same timing curve as the original 009. For my use that is perfect. 10 degrees at idle and 34 at full advance. As I recall the optional springs did not give that much advance which would be good for a street turbo set up and lower octane fuel. For any dual carb set up it should work great out of the box. Mine has a small irregularity seen on the tach below 1200 RPM but you can't feel it when you drive. I mainly bought mine for the multi spark feature and bling factor. I did have turn in my idle needle jet on all four cylinders and I picked up a couple MPG. Good luck with your project. Instead of having the 4 holes on the bottom of the distributor Pertronix designed this with a vent in the cap. All points style distributors need a means of letting condensation and moisture to escape the dizzy to keep corrosion down as well as keep the spark timing from getting misfires

mmmmmmmm I have no experience with that but I'm guessing that if both venturis are feeding into one intake passage you might do alright using 32 mm venturi's in that 40 IDF Not sure you will make it to 6.5k though. The Weber book only references a 600 cc cylinder capacity and that would be port on port for a 44IDF It would be an all out drag bike with that carb.

1641 doesn't leave me with much to comment on. I'm not a big fan of those 1641 thin wall engines. They make more power for a few thousand miles and it slowly goes away. Rear Tire size is a big factor. If they are tall it changes the gear ratio and the cooling fan is going slower. General tune up. Plugs, points, wires, air cleaner, blah blah blah tell me more and I will try to help. More power comes from a good blend of performance parts. The stock engine was a good engine with low end torque. Lots of guys rebuild them and add a performance camshaft in and the spend the money to get the right combo. Dual carbs and header exhaust helps

@@TheEZGZ Specs from what was told to me as i purchased the vehicle as is and didnt do it myself: engine rebuild 800miles ago, stock crank, w90 cam, mahl slip in 87mm, stock dp heads, 37mm welded blade fan, 12v alt with stock style pully, single pict 30 carb, stock fuel pump, empi electronic distributor with bosch blue coil, 1-5/8in bobcat exhaust, stock swing axle, 28.88in diameter tires. In town use cyl 3 temps(type k thermo couple) reads 368f and freeway at 65 mph is 350f. Heat risers are not connected as the exhaust doesnt have em(plan on changing that or going dual 34s). Plan on getting upgraded heads as i need new ones anyway (cyl 2 as a broken off fin might as well upgrade if i need to replace it). If I get upgraded heads i wanted to go 92mm heads so i can go thick wall 88 from AA Performance. But i am very much a novice and would like input from someone who isnt trying to sell me something(Autozone tried to sell me house brand antifreeze lol) I live In the Central Valley in Cali and generally work 12am shifts so nights are not too hot or cool. If you need any more info I'll figure it out and get back to you. I really appreciate the info already given. I dont like thin walled barrels either.

  • @TheEZGZ

    @TheEZGZ

Ok, now we have some info. What I'm hearing is you bought this car with a rebuilt engine with only 800 miles on the engine. You are considering spending. $200 dollars on 88 pistons and about $400 on heads add another $400 for those 34 dual carbs. All those things will improve the power but not as much as you would think. Your only adding 38cc of displacement. Going to dual carbs is going to be your big power adder. Ounce you step up to dual carbs your going to be messing with them all the time. All dual carbs are a PITA but when they are tuned right it is wonderful. I would rather see you buy a Pair of dual 40 kadrons or dual 40 IDF Webers with 28 venturi's. Put those on and get the linkage spot on. Drive it that way for a while and see what you think. Buying the bigger cylinders and heads aren't going to make that much more power but give it longer life. I would just run the jugs and heads you have and use them up. A broken fin isn't the end of the world and you probably going to build a different engine. It sounds like you have a really nice set up for around town cruising and offroad exploring. It is what it is. It will not be a fast car on the main highway or interstate. Except that and enjoy the car. If you start throwing your money at the engine and decide you don't like it later your not going to get your money back. Most VW magazines are there to sell parts and entertain you. Go to swap meets. Talk to the owners of cars you like and ask them what works for them. Many times those guys with nice cars and big engines have a lot of old parts they would love to sell. Immerse yourself in the VW world and have a good time.
