New Volkswagen Polo GTI Overview | Should you buy one in 2023?

Throughout automotive history, there have been cars that would have been remembered far more fondly had they not been overshadowed by far more illustrious stablemates - and here's one of them, Volkswagen's Polo GTI.
Part of the reason for that is that in the past, the Wolfsburg brand has never really given this model what enthusiasts would see as a 'proper' GTI engine. But all that changed in 2017 when this sixth generation version was first launched, complete with the rorty 2.0-litre EA888-series turbo engine from the Golf GTI. The Polo GTI's time should have come.
It didn't quite work out like that: partly because of high pricing, partly because the manual gearbox option we were promised was only imported in tiny numbers and partly because of the excellence of the competition, mainly this Polo model's long time nemesis the Fiesta ST, a model latterly joined by the equally impressive Hyundai i20N. Undaunted, Volkswagen took the opportunity to rejuvenate this 'AW/BZ'-series Polo GTI in late 2021, as a more polished, quality alternative to those two cars. Does it stack up that way?

This engine is different from the one that is on golf, first place for the turbo, secondly the cycle is different, and the overall displacement. Only thing you can say that's an ea888 and the golf has ea888 too, same "architecture" but they are different (turbo, pistons position, cycle, etc)
These come with a wet clutch 7 speed gearbox, not a 6 speed
This Polo gti sounds like a vacuum cleaner!
The review car has a rotary keyed ignition! I am shocked😮😮😮, especially considering how much this car costs.

Just what I was thinking, especially when the outside is relatively grown-up looking for a hot hatch. That red inlay is hideous!

I find VW's DSG transmission shifter really frustrating as you have to press the brake pedal to move it from "N" to "D". In traffic jams and slow-moving stop-start traffic it is very irritating. Other manufacturers (e.g.Renault) don't make you press the brake pedal, you can just move the lever freely between N and D and vice-versa, so why does VW make it so awkward?

You don't really need to shift to N while driving though. Keeping it in D is fine, it won't damage your brakes much, as DSGs are torque converters and absorb most of the energy. Frequently changing gear while driving is actually more likely to put wear on automatic transmissions. If you want to rest your feet in traffic I'd suggest to put your car into P (park) as you have a lot more control than putting it into N. Though it's necessary to use the brake pedal before changing gear when doing this, because the car will want to always move forward when in D.

I'd always have control of the brake before I select D, so it makes sense to me.

Why on earth would you change from D to N while driving? Defeats the whole purpose of driving automatic, just leave it in D and switch to P when parked. Neutral is literally never required.

The Fiesta ST is £2k cheaper. But the interior is awful with an iPad stuck on the dash as an afterthought.
