It’s time for an awesome petrol vs electric tug-of-war!
Mat’s got hold of the new Land Rover Defender 90 and he’s facing off against a classic Defender… That’s powered by the same Tesla battery from a Model S!
So how do they compare on paper? Well starting with the Defender 90, it’s packing a 3-litre straight-six turbo diesel under the bonnet which can produce 250hp & 570Nm of torque! It arrives with all-wheel drive, along with a low range mode - perfect for a tug of war!
As for the class Defender, the engine’s been ripped out and replaced with a 100kWh battery pack! As a result, it now puts down 450hp & 450Nm of torque.

You’re joking right? It’s the best way to preserve them! Even Aston Martin has a program where they remove and crate up your old motor and transmission, then install electric and battery using the same factory mounting points. You instantly have a much better performing “classic” while preserving the original parts. A win-win.

Swapping to electric lets them continue to enjoy their vehicle, provides them with increased performance, and retains all the original parts for later down the road or resale.
For heavy off-road work or towing, an electric car must have an adjustable transmission.

For electric cars those Tesla's are really light considering most electrics are 3500+ pounds on average or about 2000KG

Yes, but look at the AT tires on the Black electric defender.... They are better in off-road. Try to do the same with the same tires.

Why does carwow need to do a tug of war with a low end model Diesel Defender against a Tesla Swapped classic Defender(that too with better off-road tyres). It's obvious about who's gonna win. (Edit : The green Defender with lots of unknown parts of different era loses though, and Matt trys his best not to appreciate the new diesel Defender by giving excuses. The ending of this video is a bit unusual too.(Something is fishy)).
