the comet's tail does not act like a jet engine. It moves because it is in orbit. The tail is caused by dust and gas being blown away from the comet by the solar wind.

I beg to differ: The tail is plasma in glow mode. The plasma is glowing because its discharging relative to the electrical potential of the sun. It’s not lighted by the sun. The dust being machined off comets is dark… it is dirt, not ice. Silicates plus hydroxyls from positive ions from the sun… the same reason we find water on the moon. The deflection of the filaments (tail) was a simple reaction to charges of the particles moving orthogonally through them.

@@abighairyspider comets are propelled because of their long eliptical orbits around the sun. The closer to the sun, the faster it goes. As it is leaving back out away from the sun the tail will be in front of it because of the solar winds. The tail usually starts to generate inbound near the orbit of Mars. That's when the the sun begins to start burning off the comet. It may end up like comet ISON which burnt away as it went around the sun.

Hey, at 01:43 when saying that the tail of a comet acts like a jet engine that propels the comet forward, I meant in the look, not in the function. Sorry for not making this clear enough. The tail of a comet is actually a result of the comet’s motion and the sun’s radiation pressure. The tail always points away from the sun, regardless of the comet’s direction of travel. Also, its motion is determined by its orbit around the sun, which is influenced by gravity and other factors. I hope this clarifies the confusion and you still enjoy the video. Thank you for your feedback.

The tail of a comet does not lay in its path and realy has nothing to do with a jet engine or any kind of propulsion. Actually its solar activity which is responsible for the rails appearence. The tail always points away from the sun. It gets shorter when nearing the sun and will grow again when the comet leaves the suns vicinity, until it finally fades away.

the interesting thing you are missing is that on approach its orbit was calculated as hyperbolic, being ejected from the solar system after perihelion. However now it has clearly been captured by the sun's gravity and will be returning to the inner solar system in 485 years or so i believe

no the orbit is calculated by observing multiple positions along its course in space three dimensional coordinates. on approach looked AS IF it might be on a hyperbolic out of solar system but now confirmed as long period comet returning whenever, so something has shifted that predicted orbit whether thers an electrical influence is yet to be proven, i keep an open mind, but it is gravity that can either assist a slingshot into expulsion from the system, or keep the object on a solar based long elliptical orbit, which of cousre you know already. all the best @@abighairyspider

In ancient writings it was said that some specifically had 'beards', 'tails', and 'horns'. This is due to the relationship the cometary body had with it either approaching or leaving the vicinity of another oppositely charged body. It is all 'charge differential' of plasma and not 'dust and gas' being blown off by the solar wind.

Someday, there will be a comet which passes so close to the Earth, when we see it it will fill the entire sky! So bright that we will even see it during the daylight hours! If that happens we will be grateful if it does not strike the world. And we will be grateful that we were able to see such a huge comet in the sky. In that case it will be close enough for dust particles to wash over the satellites. Then we will know if those particles affect satellites or not. Like snow filling up a satellite dish. It's like shaking out a rug. The one shaking the rug gets a face full of dust. The person standing nearby should take a few steps back.
