    You have to remember, this is without oil pressure being applied and that would balance the turbo's action as it floats the bearing in oil, this is how it should be as shown and anything excessive obviously has some damage and wear and the fins would strike the side and disintergrate, also a seepage of oil into the turbo housing would be noticeable.

    Subtle flex of having a HUGE pile of turbos in the background reinforces the knowledge presented. Thanks for this! There are many videos of journal bearing shaft play. This is the first ive found showcasing ball bearing play. I picked up a used GTX2971 and with about 30k miles on it, it has exactly the same play shown here.

    The gap is to allow oil to flow around shaft & baring Once oil is in the play is gone. But the turbo should spin very well

    Turbo's have ball bearing's that are lubricated by engine oil PRESSURE. This pressure center's both bearings and the oil is drained back by the lower drain tube. I just replace the "center rotating assembly" as if both intake and exhaust housing are not damaged they can be reused BUT be sure to make center punch marking everywhere for reassembly. (clocking all 3 parts) If when checking the old turbo you see scratch marks on the inside of the housings, the the bearing ARE worn out and need replacing.

  • @maximillianbodine2078

    Those are ball bearing turbos correct? Ball bearings always have more play like you're showing than roller bearing turbos. That level of play on a roller bearing turbo would typically indicate wear and potential failure soon.

    Does the impeller get a little harder to turn when you push it all the way to the side and try to turn it? Like when you said "if I push it, the fins almost touch the side" is the turbo harder to turn at that point? I have a whistling noise I'm trying to find and can't decide if it's my turbo or my exhaust Manifold broken bolt

    I'm new to the diesel world and recently bought a 2006 Duramax 3500 with 87000 mile on it. It has this grinding or growling sound as it spools down from 2000 rpm. So I just checked the shaft and it has the same amount of play so I guess I'm ok there. It runs great with lots of power from the turbo. Any idea what the grinding noise might be or is it normal?

  • @MrFredboy

    @MrFredboy

    5 жыл бұрын

    Can you hear the grinding noise change pitch as the turbo whistle changes pitch? If not, its entirely unrelated to the turbo, and I'd venture a guess it's likely worn out pinion bearings allowing the pinion shaft to back away from the ring gear causing a howl because helical cut gears will pull the pinion towards the ring gear normalizing the backlash and "preload" for lack of better term, and reverse loaded push the pinion away allowing the gears to mesh funny making a grinding or howling/growling sound. Or if you have a stick, it could be pretty much basically the same thing as pinion, only play in a main or counter shaft allowing the gears to walk when you let off. Can you give us more detail on where it's coming from, more specifically what conditions it does it under (in gear only, in neutral, different RPM ranges..etc)?

    I never thought about it, but it could also be the VGT system, being an 06 which should be a LLY. Could be carbon buildup on the unison ring causing the veins on the VGT to not close, and dropping off the throttle and boost with such low tolerances with the veins fully open, that little bit of shaft play could cause the turbine wheel to contact the weins. It's a spitball guess at best until we have more info on exactly the situation. If you could upload a video and direct us to your channel, that'd be about the best info you could give us.

    Sounds like valve noise. The ej255 lash specification is .007 to .009 on the intake valves and .009 to .011 on the exhaust valves. What you are hearing is most likely the cam striking the buckets on the exhaust valves due to their larger clearance. Better to be on the looser (louder) side than the tighter (quieter) side.

    both journal and ball bearing have about the same radial play. a ball bearing will have more thrust (in and out) play. this turbo in the video is ball bearing. you wouldnt here a in and out click on a journal bearing turbo.
