NEW TAYLORMADE MILLED GRIND 4 (MG4) WEDGE REVIEW
Спорт
Today Ian and Mikey take a look at the new TaylorMade Milled Grind 4 (MG4) Wedge with All-New Spin Tread Technology for Enhanced Spin in Wet Conditions.
TaylorMade has introduced a comprehensive range of sole grinds in the MG4 lineup, offering golfers more versatility while also simplifying the selection process. The grinds are categorized into three main options: low bounce (LB), standard bounce (SB) and high bounce (HB) providing a total of six bounces to meet the player's unique requirements.
The new MG4 wedge range features the following sole grinds:
Low Bounce (LB): Low leading edge for added versatility and shot making in firm conditions.
Low Bounce V (LBV): Designed for skilled players with a shallow attack angle, offering exceptional spin and the ability to manipulate face angles effectively.
Standard Bounce (SB): All-around performance that prevents excessive digging and allows the clubhead to glide through the turf smoothly.
Standard Bounce C (SBC): Provides increased versatility for players who prefer to manipulate face angles, without compromising bounce performance.
High Bounce (HB): TaylorMade's standard high bounce design is playable for skilled golfers and defies the convention that high bounce wedges are only for high handicappers. In fact, Rory McIlroy uses a HB 60° Milled Grind 4 depending on course conditions.
High Bounce Wide (HBW): With an increased sole width, this high bounce option offers improved playability and excels in sand play.
Tiger Woods Grind (TW): Offered in 56° and 60° lofts, each sole on the MG4 TW was inspired by Tiger’s grind. The 56° wedge is a dual sole with heavy heel relief, while the 60° has an extremely high bounce on the leading edge with a shaved heel. Designed to be supremely versatile, these unique grinds allow Tiger to take on any shot, on any course, anywhere in the world.

Wow. Usually can tell whether you guys are hot, cold, or neutral on product but it’s pretty rare that the praise is this glaringly obvious. Ian was practically glowing talking about these. Never been a TM wedge guy but this test is going to get me over to my pro shop to hit a few. Great video, boys.
Super happy with the channel dynamic lately. Mikey seems confident behind the camera and the back and forth conversation has been great

Have to agree with this… Ian is an absolute pro in front of the camera and Mikey is now dialled in as well.
That was a great little aside and value add from Ian on his 50 yard pitch technique. Much appreciated.
I love that they give us an option to customize/personalize these wedges along with just an amazing wedge. Picked up the 50,54, and 58 and customized with colors and emblems. Can't wait to get them in
Thanks for this great vid, I'm so hooked on your content and try to never miss a video. Wondered what they would be like and as I was debating on the new Cleveland RTX wedges I'm sure y'all sold me on the new MG4's
Really enjoyed this video. You did a great job in verbalising the difference in feel for the 60 degree
Just got a set of 3. They're fantastic. I am very sweepy in my swing and for me the 7 bounce LBV was perfect (previously played a Cobra SB 4 bounce widelow). Just shows the value of a proper fit and the options for lots of different golfers.
Great review! I usually play a 60 with about 10* but flatten and add loft on the Mizuno T series. Hard pack coast conditions. $$$!
I have a very low bounce 60° in my bag. The bunkers at my home course are extremely firm making a SW (12° bounce) shot very difficult. The low bounce 60 makes it easier to get under the ball and not thin it into the next zip code. I am now very intrigued with these new TM wedges.
I love my mg3tw 60. Didnt realize i’d appreciate the extra bounce til i tried it!
I really enjoyed the MG3 so looking forward to trying these out
Just ordered a 50, 56 and 60. My dispersion was insanely good
Great looking wedges!
i love that Ian is stuck on paint fill. Always makes me crack up.

I got these wedges in sb and i must say they are excellent 👌 😊
Looks like Rory's feedback with the SM9 has paid off.
Curious how much the middle of the face will hold up after practice and course play, had the mg3 and the raised points between the lines wore very quickly..and compared to a vokey it was very hard
No wet wedge test with those new laser etchings between the grooves?! Was really looking forward to Ian with the spray bottle 😔😂
Thanks for the video! Those look very nice. Question though, any recommendations for a good wedge at a cheaper price point? I find it hard to justify over $200 on 3 wedges that I have to replace every couple years.
I actually love the green paint fill. Not traditional, but looks good to me.
Great video. Loving my stealth 2 woods and hybrid. I am excited to try a 60 degree mg4. Taylormade on a roll lately. You guys are obviously digging it. Also considering callaway cb wedge but its only available in high bounce. I Will Probably take your advice and get a local wedge fitting this spring. Maybe irons as well. My irons are ping g710 with stock regular graphite shafts. Forgiving yes. Precision no. Ping glide 4.0 58 t6 with steel shaft. Forgiving yes. Precision on chips no. Vokey L grind sm6 bounce 4 58 degree steel shaft. Forgiveness no. Precision yes. Callaway sure out 64 degree steel shaft. Forgiveness and precision for me but not off tight lies. That sure out wedge is the only club in my bag that has secured its spot in the bag round after round. It just stinks on tight lies. Are graphite shafted wedges less precise? Cavity back wedges less precise? I want a 60 degree wedge that can i be precise on both chipping and full swing no matter the lie. Guessing mid bounce might be wise. Whichever wedge i end up with i think i will go with a white grip and a green colored shaft to match my green and white golf bag, golf shoes, car, house. Green eggs and ham
Would you guys go more steel or Graphite shaft on these wedges? Do you get more distance and control from the bounce on the Graphite?
Getting fit for some irons (hopefully p790’s) and definitely gonna get these as well I think as I have such bad gapping in my wedges currently! Super good review. P.s the green and white looks amazing!

Keep your mind open to the P770's, I have p790's and found that I wished I could work the ball just a little more, phenomenal clubs however.
My favorite wedge grind of all time was the Tour Preferred 2014 ATV. Any of these offerings somewhat similar or would a Vokey V or M with more heel relief be closer?
I play on a course with lots of muddy lies around the greens. Apart from 7/8i chips, I like to use 58 for all around the green shots... what grind would you recommend to help me pitch in muddy lies?
Just did the shootout at my local PGA SS with a ProV1. Full swing SM9 60/08M 12,900 revs. TM MG4 11,200 avg. But it's a nice wedge, for sure.. 50% shots the Vokey still took the spin crown by a few hundred.. The Irish Green paintfill is delicious, though, laddy. :). Come on, Ian!
Any TM wedge that you would say is like the T grind? I love that in the vokey but love these new wedges!
I love the white and green, suits us here in Dublin 😂
As a fellow Scotsman it’s embarrassing how hung up Ian is over some green and white paint 😂😂😂

Can someone explain to me why the middle dots on the wedge (when Ian shows the close up) are so low? The center dots are well below the center if the grooves and they also don’t look like they are level.. Does anyone know why?
I've seriously been considering a set of MG4 wedges, as they are beautiful and the reviews are excellent. What are your guys thoughts on the TW grinds for these? I like my wedges traditionally in the 11 is bounce range, just not sure on his grinds or the standard offering.
I had a set of TaylorMade XFT wedges that I loved. I replaced them with SM8s a couple years ago and the grinds on the Vokey's seem super aggressive. I had a 56/12 in the XFT that was super versatile. I went with a 54/10 S grind in the Vokey and I can't seem to hit anything but square face shots. Is there anything that's a versatile high bounce that's comparable to that XFT today?
How come the 50° only comes with the 9 bounce option and all other have multiple options?
I’ve had my hi-toe 2s for a few years now with the raw face. I haven’t noticed them wearing off when it comes to face “roughness”. They do chew up a ball cover though
Interested to see the versatility/playability of the 60HB compared to the 60TW as I play inland and links golf?
I man loyal to his club 😂 Blues brothers CFC x Rangers, am I right Ian?! Another class review. Cheers!!!
I found that same thing with the MG3’s I played. First shots they spun like crazy. After very few uses all that BS milling or laser etching smoothed out and spun dropped wayyyyyyy off. I went back to playing Vokey’s. I won’t play TM wedges ever again because of it. I feel like they purposefully put the wedges out knowing all that BS will smooth out quickly and the club stops performing like when you bought it after very few shots. If you use them at a driving range they’ll be done even quicker with those rock balls
Makes me wonder what the old diamond face purespin wedges would be like on the spin test
They look verry nice. 10-12 degree of bounce is a must for 98% of us. Will they bring these out in full-face?
I'd love to see a comparison of the spin retention from a wet face. Comparing the MG4s, Glides and vokeys would be awesome material 😊

RTX6 has the best spin in the wet. These may spend more in the soggy stuff.
What is the most forgiving tour shaped wedge? Not including cavity back wedge like cbx
I've not followed the awesome team for a while. 😮 what happened to TXG, loved the name. Still love all you do guys
Not sure if possible but could you consider reviewing Tour Edge EXS ?
Every time I look in a players bag and they have no bounce on their wedges I know it’s going to be a long day the closer we get to the greens. Bounce is there to help you . If the blade gets in the turf you have no chance. Bounce is there to help us when we run out of talent. The kids I looped for yesterday had a low bounce K and that might be the best wedges that title isn’t makes. I do love the high bounce v and the D grind as well. My current setup I’ve been in for two years. I hand ground it from a blank sole and I have it just how I want it but it’s time to go back in the hunt. I need to run Aaron D and bribe him to make me some one offs! 😂
Do theses spin more in the wet compared to the king of wet spin the RTX6?
Boy, Ian went all out with LACC US Open gear this year.
What shaft is being used on the club ?
I hit them a few weeks ago and man that milling on the face takes off materials. You’re going to kill a few golf balls with these new wedges. 😂
What shaft were you using here? Modus?
How did this wedge do with water on the ball?
Bounce is the enemy at 60° have had an 04° since SM7
Ian been to the tanning salon? keep up the good work boys!
It’s insane to see how much difference bounce makes. Precision isn’t my strong suit. I think I’ve been going about it all wrong.
Would love to see a wet test
Have you guys noticed if the laser etching comes off rather fast? Saw it did in ricks vid out of the bunker
Have they done the outside test yet?
When are they gonna make the TW grind in lefty?
When do the Vokey SM 10 come out?
Do you guys keep it pretty cool in the bay? Lookin like it’s winter! 😂
Would love to see this compared to the glide 4
Just ordered a Wedge Works Vokey with a bunch of green and white 😂
What's wrong with the green white paint?
I'm currently playing MG3 at 58.11SB and absolutely love it. I'm very intrigued by the 58.09SBC, would it be worth the risk to go with the SBC? Or just stick with what I know and get some fresh grooves?
Would love to know the durability of these
What does that roughness of the wedge face do to the cover of the ball from a durability standpoint?
@clubchampionmedia

We test that in the video and address it at least twice.
Ian changing wedges, everybody drink!
So weird that there are still new wedges coming out without some sort of hydrophobicity technology
Come on Ian, allow a little green in your life haha! Mikey, you got the new Celtic top yet?
Hey TaylorMade, when you make a wedge that doesn’t rust, sign me up.
How often do you replace a clients “set PW” with a custom lofted wedge (i.e. vokey, TM, etc)?
@lawbinson
11 ай бұрын
Not often. They’ve said they prefer set models for clubs that players primarily take full swings with
@Joey1970T
11 ай бұрын
Actually they have a video on this question. Ian uses a Volkey 46 for his PW and they proved the specialized PW has more consistent spin, especially when wet, over a standard set PW.
@kaisersoze6685
11 ай бұрын
They have a least one video in the archive on this, maybe more if I’m not mistaken. Pretty sure generally they prefer the set PW but it’s dependent on a few factors. For one, loft. If your irons are strong in loft it would be too large a gap to go to a specialty PW. I can’t think of any that are under 46* off the top of my head so 41* 9 iron would probably be the cutoff. Aside from that, it’s really only beneficial for players who use their PW around the green. Most of us use it as a full swing 10-iron so it wouldn’t make a ton of sense.
@zazhou

Please help me with the logic of transition from strong set PW of to specialty wedge for average golfers, when the set PW has a regular and lighter shaft and the specialty wedge is heavier and stiffer?
Wish the black was still a standard option like last year
Question: why are there so many club releases in the end or back half of the year & golf season? Wouldn’t manu’s want people to buy equipment for a fresh season? Just curious the business reason
@Radioghost717
11 ай бұрын
I would guess it’s to keep the slow season busy. As we head into the fall and winter clubs are getting put away, so keeping the equipment fresh and new may allow for more consistent sales throughout the year. Just my thoughts.
@lawbinson

I think people are also more hesitant to change in-season and would rather make a change in the off-season so they don’t potentially ruin their game.

@@dronepocket325 Pretty sure they are used by the pros waaaay before they get released to the public.
I totally respect Ian and all his knowledge, however I disagree with all the low bounce chatter about how you need to be a very advanced player to use them. It is so dependent on your swing type. 12 degrees and up, doesn’t work for me at all. I need lower bounce wedges. 10 degrees is about the limit for me, unless I’m in some super soft sand. I’m extremely shallow with my irons and wedges. So there are definitely people that need low to mid bounce wedges that aren’t superstar wedges gamers. The vokey D grind is a death sentence for me and unfortunately I didn’t have an opportunity to test them on the course, so I relied on the wedge selector. I must have run it 100 times and the majority of the times it said 12D, so that’s what I bought. It’s pretty much worthless for me in every condition but super soft deep sand.
Was hoping to see Ian get out the wee spritzer bottle
Yep great wedge, (and I do need to replace my aging Callaway X Jaws) BUT at $350 a wedge here in Australia, I’m afraid I will not even blink an eye at em. C’mon you major manufacturers, pull your head in and stop the price gouging.

Bounce numbers on v-grinds always lower because of the narrow sole. But initial bounce is usually pretty higher

Bit annoyed as a lefty - no all raw custom option and no high bounce (non W) grind??? 😢
Hope these aren’t as big and with less offset compared to MG3.
