NEW TAYLORMADE MILLED GRIND 4 (MG4) WEDGE REVIEW

Спорт

Today Ian and Mikey take a look at the new TaylorMade Milled Grind 4 (MG4) Wedge with All-New Spin Tread Technology for Enhanced Spin in Wet Conditions.
TaylorMade has introduced a comprehensive range of sole grinds in the MG4 lineup, offering golfers more versatility while also simplifying the selection process. The grinds are categorized into three main options: low bounce (LB), standard bounce (SB) and high bounce (HB) providing a total of six bounces to meet the player's unique requirements.
The new MG4 wedge range features the following sole grinds:
Low Bounce (LB): Low leading edge for added versatility and shot making in firm conditions.
Low Bounce V (LBV): Designed for skilled players with a shallow attack angle, offering exceptional spin and the ability to manipulate face angles effectively.
Standard Bounce (SB): All-around performance that prevents excessive digging and allows the clubhead to glide through the turf smoothly.
Standard Bounce C (SBC): Provides increased versatility for players who prefer to manipulate face angles, without compromising bounce performance.
High Bounce (HB): TaylorMade's standard high bounce design is playable for skilled golfers and defies the convention that high bounce wedges are only for high handicappers. In fact, Rory McIlroy uses a HB 60° Milled Grind 4 depending on course conditions.
High Bounce Wide (HBW): With an increased sole width, this high bounce option offers improved playability and excels in sand play.
Tiger Woods Grind (TW): Offered in 56° and 60° lofts, each sole on the MG4 TW was inspired by Tiger’s grind. The 56° wedge is a dual sole with heavy heel relief, while the 60° has an extremely high bounce on the leading edge with a shaved heel. Designed to be supremely versatile, these unique grinds allow Tiger to take on any shot, on any course, anywhere in the world.

Wow. Usually can tell whether you guys are hot, cold, or neutral on product but it’s pretty rare that the praise is this glaringly obvious. Ian was practically glowing talking about these. Never been a TM wedge guy but this test is going to get me over to my pro shop to hit a few. Great video, boys.

Just got a set of 3. They're fantastic. I am very sweepy in my swing and for me the 7 bounce LBV was perfect (previously played a Cobra SB 4 bounce widelow). Just shows the value of a proper fit and the options for lots of different golfers.

I have a very low bounce 60° in my bag. The bunkers at my home course are extremely firm making a SW (12° bounce) shot very difficult. The low bounce 60 makes it easier to get under the ball and not thin it into the next zip code. I am now very intrigued with these new TM wedges.

Great video. Loving my stealth 2 woods and hybrid. I am excited to try a 60 degree mg4. Taylormade on a roll lately. You guys are obviously digging it. Also considering callaway cb wedge but its only available in high bounce. I Will Probably take your advice and get a local wedge fitting this spring. Maybe irons as well. My irons are ping g710 with stock regular graphite shafts. Forgiving yes. Precision no. Ping glide 4.0 58 t6 with steel shaft. Forgiving yes. Precision on chips no. Vokey L grind sm6 bounce 4 58 degree steel shaft. Forgiveness no. Precision yes. Callaway sure out 64 degree steel shaft. Forgiveness and precision for me but not off tight lies. That sure out wedge is the only club in my bag that has secured its spot in the bag round after round. It just stinks on tight lies. Are graphite shafted wedges less precise? Cavity back wedges less precise? I want a 60 degree wedge that can i be precise on both chipping and full swing no matter the lie. Guessing mid bounce might be wise. Whichever wedge i end up with i think i will go with a white grip and a green colored shaft to match my green and white golf bag, golf shoes, car, house. Green eggs and ham

I had a set of TaylorMade XFT wedges that I loved. I replaced them with SM8s a couple years ago and the grinds on the Vokey's seem super aggressive. I had a 56/12 in the XFT that was super versatile. I went with a 54/10 S grind in the Vokey and I can't seem to hit anything but square face shots. Is there anything that's a versatile high bounce that's comparable to that XFT today?

I found that same thing with the MG3’s I played. First shots they spun like crazy. After very few uses all that BS milling or laser etching smoothed out and spun dropped wayyyyyyy off. I went back to playing Vokey’s. I won’t play TM wedges ever again because of it. I feel like they purposefully put the wedges out knowing all that BS will smooth out quickly and the club stops performing like when you bought it after very few shots. If you use them at a driving range they’ll be done even quicker with those rock balls

Every time I look in a players bag and they have no bounce on their wedges I know it’s going to be a long day the closer we get to the greens. Bounce is there to help you . If the blade gets in the turf you have no chance. Bounce is there to help us when we run out of talent. The kids I looped for yesterday had a low bounce K and that might be the best wedges that title isn’t makes. I do love the high bounce v and the D grind as well. My current setup I’ve been in for two years. I hand ground it from a blank sole and I have it just how I want it but it’s time to go back in the hunt. I need to run Aaron D and bribe him to make me some one offs! 😂

They have a least one video in the archive on this, maybe more if I’m not mistaken. Pretty sure generally they prefer the set PW but it’s dependent on a few factors. For one, loft. If your irons are strong in loft it would be too large a gap to go to a specialty PW. I can’t think of any that are under 46* off the top of my head so 41* 9 iron would probably be the cutoff. Aside from that, it’s really only beneficial for players who use their PW around the green. Most of us use it as a full swing 10-iron so it wouldn’t make a ton of sense.

I totally respect Ian and all his knowledge, however I disagree with all the low bounce chatter about how you need to be a very advanced player to use them. It is so dependent on your swing type. 12 degrees and up, doesn’t work for me at all. I need lower bounce wedges. 10 degrees is about the limit for me, unless I’m in some super soft sand. I’m extremely shallow with my irons and wedges. So there are definitely people that need low to mid bounce wedges that aren’t superstar wedges gamers. The vokey D grind is a death sentence for me and unfortunately I didn’t have an opportunity to test them on the course, so I relied on the wedge selector. I must have run it 100 times and the majority of the times it said 12D, so that’s what I bought. It’s pretty much worthless for me in every condition but super soft deep sand.
