New Stumpjumper 15 vs Stumpy Evo | Head to Head Testing

Brand New Specialized Stumpjumper | Bike Testing
We took the new Stumperjumper 15 out for some test runs in Le Carroz to get it dialled in for race week.
Had a good session on the bike and came out with some surprising results.
Thanks Specialized for developing an epic new ride and thanks TP for getting it in tune.

    I would think a Vivid with HBO would be better than the Genie. Two separately tuned circuits. I think the Genie is sick, but frankly it just seems like a cheaper, simpler way to get bottom out protection with less weight and complexity than HBO. This will appeal to more Stumpjumper fans than Evo fans. New Enduro will be out soon after enduro season ends and prospective Evo buyers will be enticed by the bigger bike while the Stumpjumper (non-Evo) fans will be glad the bike is this capable with the lighter weight of the Genie. And people who like to use the bike for everything, still can.

    I think the new Enduro will be enticing for EVO owners that have maxed their EVO out. I'm running mixed wheel, WRP yoke, Cascade link, Medium + shim tune w/ 1.0 spacer, Fox 38 w/ E-Tuned, and 5DEV 155mm cranks. It's definitely capable. I'm hoping Specialized amps up the Enduro with the adjustability and modification/ aftermarket that the EVO has. To me the EVO is Trail/Enduro. Hopefully they make the Enduro to be Enduro/Downhill adjustable.

I hope Specialized appreciate all the effort too!!! I may have missed it but I assume you are running 160mm fork in the Stumpjumper 15? I’ve always thought a short travel and long travel bike are a good quiver (if not needed) but more and more short travel bikes are getting increasingly capable and long travel bikes more efficient.

Last question, might be more for you mechanic, but how intuitive and effective is that new Motion Instruments DAQ system?? Out of curiosity, do you remove a volume spacer(s) from the progressive air can compared to what you have in the linear air can? I found after getting the same sag with higher pressure on the megneg, I had to balance the feel of the larger negative chamber with a larger positive chamber (less positive volume spacers). From a racer's perspective, I'm surprised you'd find a preference for the Stumpy 15 vs. the current EVO model, especially if you are not able (because of sponsorship) to use the Genie shock. You're basically "giving away" a little bit of travel, while also running significantly less leverage rate with similar ending rate (2.49) between the two. If you aren't going to use a larger volume shock, you're presumably giving up quite a bit of small/midsize bump sensitivity and traction as the Stumpy 15 has way lower leverage throughout all of travel. The 15 was basically built specifically for that Fox Genie shock, or a large volume shock with HBO.

  • @Chazmaztv

    @Chazmaztv

    Very interesting perspective, I thought similar to you when looking at the curves but when I started riding it I was super impressed with the performance under a normal shock and actually preferred the linear air can on the SDLX over both the Vivid and the new XL SDLX can. Don't ask me why just preferred the feeling. Also worth noting my riding style is quite unique so that could be why I'm enjoying the normal SDLX

    @@brian6speed Perhaps, but the new stumpy has a very different leverage ratio curve than what Specialized and lots of other bike companies will engineer into their frames. Enduro really is more of big mountain or Whistler park bike, too long in 29” setup although somewhat better with mullet link. Much more suitable for flat out straight tracks. SJ evo and I guess new SJ15 are much better bikes in tighter tracks and steep tight dropping corners as they are much more agile, also I am assuming the 29er is generally better rolling and pedaling for most of the enduro circuit so the stumpy is much better suited to this type of racing. Charlie also mentioned he liked the flex characteristics of the small fork in a previous video
