Fizban's Treasury of Dragons added 7 new spells to D&D 5e for a variety of different classes. They're unsurprisingly all dragon themed, but I really like the varied nature of them. I do wish there was something for Clerics or Paladins though. What do you think?

In the Draconic Transformation spell, I will keep the damage upgrade on the breath weapon. But, I will be scaling it back to the original 30’ cone. As you said, that’s still a huge area on a map. I feel that the 60’ cone is just too OP for this, even as a 7th level spell.

Rime's binding ice is really powerful. Compare it to "the fireball of second level" shatter, and a 30 ft cone is a better shape (according to the DMG it's expected to hit 3 enemies vs shatters 10 foot radius hitting 2) it does the same damage on the same save and inflicts a debilitating condition that prevents movement basically for free. Also, no verbal components so you can use it in fog to avoid counterspell and you can use it in silence I don't see why it would do the same damage as shatter except for power creep. It should have been 3d6

Fizban's Platinum Shield wouldn't be available for Paladin's anyway, it's a 6th level spell and Paladin's cap at 5th level spells That being said there is still a way to cast it but only through one of the hoard magic items. Speaking of which, note all the spells that require something 'worth 500 gold pieces' in regards to the magic items when you cover those.

Ashardalon's Stride is a bit silly in some situations. A Tabaxi Sorcerer with the Mobile Feat has 40 ft movement speed. For fun, lets say you upcast this spell at 9th lvl. That is 50 extra movement speed while the spell is active. And 7d6 dmg to each affected creature. So now the Tabaxi has 90 ft movement, they can still Dash, and use feline agility. Totalling 360 ft running speed (could be higher still with other people buffing you, or magic items) Lets also assume you get Elemental adept Fire, so the minimum dmg is 14 You can run around intelligently and affect 726 creatures in one turn? that's a minimum of 10164 fire dmg (726 creatures*14) Which wouldn't be resisted :P. Very Niche i know. But if we assume an evil campaign or an enemy army of goon, you could literally burn them all in one turn. Scary visual. And then next turn, you can burn the next army (only half the size cause feline agility is ofline)

Regarding Psychic Lance, I'm struggling to figure out whether it is a better option than Phantasmal Killer. Obviously Phantasmal Killer includes the frightened condition and a similar damage output, with a wisdom save instead of an intelligence, but Its concentration for 1 minute, with the ability to deal damage on additional saves per turn. My question is whether you'd rather deal multiple instances of damage to a frightened enemy over the course of a minute, or would you rather deal one instance of damage that incapacitates the target for a full round, that doesn't have to be in line of sight if you know the name of the target within range. Of course a wizard could pick both up, but with the spell being available to other arcane casters as well, Its likely to be a case of one or the other for a lot of people.

R's Psychic lance is so completely unbalanced it's laughable. Psychic lance is so poorly worded in the first part "You can utter a creature's name." is actually a problem, what constitutes a name? An honest question if this was in your world, I can guarantee no adventurer ever would tell you their real name, they'd always give you a nick name if that could protect them from this effect. It's hard to say but this spell opens up a long and annoying argument about what is and isn't a name. Secondly it's psychic damage on an Intelligence save. That is a premium spell. Psychic damage is almost always better than other types except maybe radiant and force, there are few things that are resistant or immune and those things are generally obvious. I think many constructs are immune to psychic damage because obviously they don't think/talk/have minds. I can't recall but I think there are some Aberrations that "like" to take psychic damage. Intelligence saves are most frequently the worst save on the majority of creatures, again it's kind of obvious the ones that have good Int saves like wizards and other very smart monsters. Without any meta knowledge, you know when it's a good time to use this spell, it is just a legit premium spell for it's damage type and save type alone. Finally it imposes incapacitated WITHOUT imposing another conditional effect. From what I've found there is 1 major creature that is immune to incapacitated, Warforged Colossus in Eberron. I don't know of any more but the WfC in Eberron are iconic creatures that can be the core story element of an entire campaign. Trying to find one and reclaim it. There are other conditions that can also apply incapacitated such as Petrified, Unconscious, Stunned and Paralyzed. There are many creatures who have various immunity to these conditions. There are a number of aberrations, fiends, undead, constructs and elemental creatures that have various immunity to these 4 conditions. This book introduced 2 spells that can do this, easily apply incapacitated without some level of qualifying feature. There are only 4 other spells that can incapacitated an enemy creature. Tasha's hideous laughter which comes with a qualifying clause "A creature with an Intelligence score of 4 or less isn't affected." Banishment and Banishing Smite which comes with several qualifying clauses that prevents the creature from being targeted while it is incapacitated. Symbol of Pain which takes a full minute to cast making it a poor in combat option and requiring at least some time to set up an ambush. Imprisonment, which doesn't actually state it incapacitates a creature so I may be stretching the definition a bit but it "effectively" incapacitates a creature. 3 out of the 5 options send a creature to a space, where it cannot be interacted with and it cannot escape of it's own accord.

Im sorry, i just dont feel like many of these spells are balanced as a DM. When you spoke about draconic transformation, you said that the buffs that they gave it were needed, but if you actually go and compare it to other spells of 7th level like mordenkainens sword, this is way stronger. Then theres Ashardalons Stride. This is still really powerful. Its AoE heat metal that the enemy can do nothing to stop. If the spell had scaled every odd level, maybe it would have been fine, but idk, it just feels too strong to me It upsets me cause all of this content seems really cool, i want to use it, my players want to use it, but everything from tasha's and onwards has just been so OP, it drives me up the wall. Theyre forcing the new content into relevancy but outclassing the old content. I know that 5e has never been a perfectly balanced system, but the content they have released recently just takes the piss. [And just to be clear, im not mad at Ted for covering the content or being excited for it, im mad at WotC. Im looking for a discussion]

Mordenkaines Sword is a bad 7th Level Spell, Ashardalon's stride is only procked once per turn per target. It's fine.

@@theindiefox347 Its just that if you look at a spell like heat metal that also has no save, it is restricted to a single target and they can avoid it if they can drop the metal item. Theres no way to avoid the stride and hits multiple targets. Even if you relegate mordenkainens sword to the "bad spell" catagory, draconic transformation has a big DPR with a massive AoE on a bonus action (its almost a bonus action cone of cold every turn), so you can still cast instantaneous spells like fireball with your action.

@@Calavid you actually can’t cast fireball because RAW you can only cast one leveled spell as a bonus action and a cantrip as an action in one round

@@LemonMoon actions from spells do not count as casting spells. On the first turn when you cast draconic transformation, you wouldn't be able to cast fireball, but for the rest of the minute you could

@@Calavid Eh I honestly don't see it as great in standard scenarios. Unless the enemy is bunched up ( and even then) you're not going to hit multiple enemies without absorbing a lot of AOO's, not to mention it's only a d6 which isn't a lot; sure it scales well but you're still a caster (or half caster) zooming around enemies putting yourself at risk for an unmodified shortsword of damage. Maybe it's early strong but i feel even by mid game the spell will see barely if any use.
