Orcas have been known to be an opportunistic species. There’s a pod of orcas off New Zealand coast that hunt sting rays, another off of Africa that have been eating the livers of sharks. Maybe this new pod just found a new food source that’s worth the effort.

Yeah but that's not normal for this area. The orcas in this area eat either fish (resident orcas) or seals(transient orcas) and orcas are known to hug coast lines, they usually don't stay in the deep ocean (where cookie cutters are)

Nope, there are at least three to five types of orcas that could potential be species or subspecies, not just pods. In western North America, there are the. 'transient', 'resident', and 'offshore' types .Scientists still aren't entirely sure wether they can classify them as such (look up 'Species Problem'), but regardless they don't appear to crossbreed.

you are wrong, pods are smaller family groups within a species, they are; Resident; fish diet,Transient; eat mammals, seals, sea lions, walrus, deer if they are swimming! & Offshore, mainly other whales...they look different, have different diets, ranges, don't interact or interbreed

Scientists aren't entirely sure. There's a few possiblities but neither is incorrect at the moment based on our current understandings of the genus.

It's a no brainer. We've been taking all their food source from overfishing and over harvesting of the oceans so they have to travel much further distances to get their food source.

But why mess with them at all. Taking samples is bothering them. They are Orcas that eat the same thing as other Orcas, whether they are transients or residents. Diversity of patterns is in nature. You see it in horses, dogs, cats, cows, etc.

Actually, there are different species of orca... maybe. Scientists aren't entirely sure but the three fistinct types/species, transient, resident, and offshore, don't seem to crossbreed. More study of the genus is required to acertain wether they are species, sub-species, or races, but calling them species is not incorrect based on our current knowledge.
