New Sloth Bear Treehouse

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

New enrichment alert! The Zoo’s exhibits crew built the bears a new enrichment climbing structure. It is made with 80 percent of salvaged material that the Zoo had on grounds. Staff was very happy to be able to repurpose the wood in this manner. The design of the structure was a collaboration between the exhibits crew and the animal care staff. Check out Kartik as he explores his treehouse for the first time.

Are Sloth 🦥 Bears 🐻 are being called that because the bears 🐻 claws look a lot like a sloth 🦥?

Good observation! A European zoologist named George Shaw named them in the 18th century. He thought they were part of the sloth family because of their claws, their sloth-like teeth, and the fact that they're great tree climbers. Scientists later realized that they are true bears, but the name had already stuck.
