I have a retaining wall on the north side of my property that's about two feet high. In the summer and fall, skaters in my town will always come grind on it or ollie off of it. As a 90s skate kid, I can offer any business owners watching some tips as to how to effectively and amicably deal with skateboarders: 1. Come out and take the first 30 seconds to see what they've got. The better the skaters = the more experienced they are, and the less likely they are to intentionally damage property, injure themselves, or overstay their welcome. Plus, you get some entertainment for a bit! 2. Ask them to leave, but give them all "two more" first. This will earn you more respect and willing compliance than anything else you could possibly do. I've only asked my guys to leave if they get overzealous with running up way too far into my yard, or when we were trying to put my infant daughter down for an afternoon nap. 3. Never EVER try to take a kid's board. Their encroachment onto your property does not legally indemnify you from assault or theft of a minor. Ask them to leave. If they don't leave, take a breath, go back inside, and simply call the police. Don't be an idiot. Be an adult, and show these "savage little brats" how adults respect one another's property. 4. Be mindful that since these kids are skateboarding, they're A. Staying active B. Not drinking or doing drugs C. Being social D. Possibly getting away from something bad at home or in their neighborhood. You have a rare opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of these kids you seem to despise. Joey, Nick, Tyler, Dakota, and Hunter remind me SO much of me and my crew back in 1999. Be the kind of person your younger self would've looked up to. That is all.

I own 3 crash helmets and a dirtbike helmet for downhill, I got a concussion riding a friend's board in the middle of the night after a party. What I'm saying is that yes, you should wear a helmet if you want to, I chose not to for most of the time I'm skating but people who put others down for wearing a helmet should be the ones we should talk about.

Man it's so wild how different skate culture is regionally, because the way I remember it, skaters were the graffiti tagging, shoplifting, trespassing, shitkicking stoner kids. No one ever expected us to follow any rules and if someone got in your face they were risking getting truck fucked by 6 teenagers. Scooters got thrown in rivers, candles got rubbed on every piece of private property that could be grinded, and sure as shit no one was ever telling adults we'd sue them or press charges.

So I'm an old guy now, but I was a skater back around 1985 or so. This was when Tony Hawk and those guys were just starting out and popular (we are about the same age). I am shocked at how good so many of these kids are. Most of the tricks they are doing would have been considered insane and totally pro level back then. I wouldn't have attempted even 1/10th the stuff they are pulling off. It amazes a guy like me.
