New S680 - The V12 Mercedes Maybach! 2022 Full Review

Without Wilhelm Maybach, the modern Mercedes, or even the modern car, might be a very different thing. He was designer of the first "Mercedes" which appeared in 1901, and was probably Gottlieb Daimler's most important partner. He can be credited with the first V engine, first truck, some of the first radiator designs, and a whole host of engines! He was also known respectfully, as the King of Designers.
That first Mercedes 35 he designed was supported by Emil Jellinek whose daughter Mercedes later named the model and the legendary car brand. The car famously had a then unheard of 35HP, long wheelbase, wide track and low height. Less carriage without horse, more modern motor car. After G.Daimler’s death #Maybach left after disputes with DMG and in 1909 Maybach was created, later renamed to "Maybach engine construction", as this was the main purpose of the company, with the first car not coming till a decade later.
He was best known for making engines for the huge Zeppelins, hence where the name for the most famous Classic Maybach car came from. Then, WW2 happened and the Maybach name went dormant - until the 1990’s, when Rolls and Bentley were in the process of resurging under new management, #MercedesBenz saw a void to be filled. So they tried to create a #luxury story out of Maybach’s genuinely fantastic achievements.
With that, the 57 and 62 were born. More expensive than any Rolls, loads of dealers opened in the USA, high sales predicted in various countries, famous people made ambassadors, features in rap videos, and glass box unveils in New York resulted in…. A total sales disaster no one really engaged with. Didn’t help that that MB press didn’t let journalists drive it, rather sit in the back. And didn’t help that the S Class of the time, was already a brilliant car.
November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz - now renamed to Mercedes Maybach. Though they tiptoed in, with a longer upgraded S-Class with a borrowed body from an SE trim car, and some changes to wheels, window trims and an extended interior.
BUT it worked! Being at the right price point, and accepting it’s a tarted up S Class was something customers could jive with, and it was a sales success. So the two facelifts to follow were more daring, more Maybach, with the return of the grille and unique paint available. Then the big signal of change, literally, with the GLS Maybach. Applying the Maybach formula to a different Mercedes to achieve high luxury standards. Again a hit!
So we come to our car today: the new S-Class Maybach based on the W223 new generation S Class. There are tonnes of unique aspects, everything you’d see changed for an AMG for example, changed here on Maybach too or maybe more! Best bit is the bonnet, which you will love!
Size wise VS S-Class LWB, the wheelbase is a whole 18 cm longer. And all of that goes to the rear passengers. Will there be a pullman too? Quite possible I’d put money on it.
Paint is special too, with an optional dual-colour painting with a separating line. It is hand-made and takes up to 1 week to complete one car… unlike minutes to spray a normal S Class; Costs 15k.
As for the engine, here’s the good news it’s a V12 bi turbo! Yes while AMG said no more V12s, Maybach never made the same promise. Our S680 4matic delivers a smooth 612 and 900NM, and you can get a S 580 V8 hybrid, with 503 BHP.
Controlling the power is a new driving mode unique to Maybach called Comfort+, highlighted in rose gold on the digital display! Something we will explore in the video.
All the tech from normal S flows through, like Rear axle steering cutting the turning circle by 2 meters. The 16 airbags, all the top suspension options come standard, except for E Active body control which is optional. That should betray how good the normal S suspension is the Maybach hasn’t needed to do more specific things!
But since the new S is so good, can this ever hope to be even more of a luxury powerhouse? Let’s find out today!

I’m across the pond here in the states. I have a 2021 S580 and my seats are super soft. You mentioned the Maybach’s seats are three times softer. It’s just amazing how these cars are made. Keep up the great work with your reviews mate.
The Maybach 57 and 62 were far more beautiful than the current S class Maybach.

I slightly disagree I would rather have the maybach emblem rather than the Mercedes star on that maybach it’s almost like it bmw would have put their badge on the phantom and then just written phantom on the side of the car that’s who I feel about that one they should restore the emblem back
What is absolute amazingly crazy is the fact that the pattern on the cushion is matched with the seat, when the cushion is upright in the seat 22:10 That's a crazy level of detail.
This Mercedes maybach's are the peak of Automobile including all existing Brands. And i had the opportunity to compare them. None other can match it.
"The power is given in a gradual way". Reminds me of a Corolla I once had.

I think they should do the double MM batch. Its a smal detail but it can make a lot of clients buy it instead of a S klasse.. it makes it a bit more diffrent and special

As with the S-Class, did you have to go with LHD to get the rear steering? I'd be interested to know if the option is available in the UK, for the Maybach.
The REASON the rear seat belts have more "material" inside them is because they have airbags built into the material, so DON'T remove before race !!!!

completely agree. In fact the front lower mesh grill seems an after market tack on. Cheap and unsavoury, no class S class.

Most people would never even consider a bright red on a non sports car these days. But this color looks amazing ok this car and compliments the white/beige leather wonderfully
Taking off that coffee cup cover while sitting in a moving white leather trim Maybach was the most insane daredevil sh*t I have ever seen, he must be an adrenaline junky, thats for sure ;D
Ugh piano black (though I guess it suits the Maybach, so maybe an exception in this case). but yeah do like the lines. But gosh, legendary interior overall. Would love to sit in the back and go for a ride.

IMO some versions of Audi virtual cockpit are still the best. Resolution and contrast, easy interface, and the satellite map view is amazing. Unfortunately, some models seem to have different versions.

No you'd be stupid to take a rr or bentley over a Maybach. They're overpriced pos Maybach looks better both inside and out and has way more luxurious amenities and is light years ahead of both them combined in technology all while costing half the price of either of them Rr and bentley are the definition of just a name badge wh0ring brands

I always liked the 57s. It’s a good looking car. It’s a better looking car than the new iteration frankly…that 680 looks a bit naff. Colour doesn’t do it any favours. Good video though as always :)

Exceptional car but just missing a nice stewardess coming out of the cupholder 😉
The perfect executive limousine definitely but personally I prefer the understated elegance of the British competitors. I just cannot handle all of these tablets in the front. It looks like your going behind the wheel of some high tech flight simulator . When I think of the interior of a luxury car I immediately think of lots of leather and wood, an upscale living room on wheels basically, definitely not an S-load of gizmos covered in white leather. So I guess that I am old school when it comes to my taste of the land yachts available today. Glad to see the V12 is back though.

The one I would like to drive would be an S680 Maybach Coupe. An up to date version of the MBZ CL600. It had a V12 also. (2004 ?) Now That was a super deluxe gran turismo for the autobahn and for long distance cruising in the USA.

My local MB dealer has a Maybach in stock. Very impressive, perhaps the most impressive vehicle I have seen in years. But my taste exclude a white interior, which I particularly dislike and the piano black is not on my options list either. The size of the vehicle reminds me of the American land yachts of decades ago.

You can have same interior color and trim (black piano) in the normal s class
I guess this blends into traffic easier than a RR, being less flashy and recognizable, which would be a huuuge selling point for me. (As if that would ever be a real life decision, hahah)

Does it have a cassette player? since you never seem to mention the orgasmic Burmester sounds system! Mercedes-Benz is the latest car company looking to bolster its audio systems with Dolby Atmos! But Mercedes-Benz’s implementation of Atmos looks to go even further, with a whopping 31 speakers scattered around the car (a list that includes six 3D speakers above passengers, four “near-ear” speakers for the two front seats, and an 18.5-liter subwoofer). Each seat also features two hidden exciters apiece (for a total of eight in the car), and everything is powered by two amplifiers with a total of 1,750 watts of power. To start, Mercedes is offering Atmos in its top-of-the-line Maybach model, followed later by its S-Class cars featuring its new MBUX infotainment system. Unfortunately, given the price of both the Mercedes Maybach and S-Class cars, having the hardware to get the full Atmos experience won’t be cheap. The entry-level S-Class vehicle, a 2021 S 500 4Matic sedan, starts at $110,850, and the Burmester 4D surround sound add-on that’s necessary for Atmos is an additional $6,730. Customers of the top-of-the-line Maybach model won’t have to worry, though - the upgraded sound system is already included in the base $185,950 price tag.
